Pros GIMP is an excellent raster graphics editor, that could be used to retouch photos professionally as well as design web graphics. The software is equipped with a number of tools, that enable both elementary and complex operations. The interface is transparent and uncluttered, as the icons are minimalistic and the windows dockable so that you can fully customize the editor to meet your needs. Converting between different image format is seamless, so you are able to import and edit files saved in Photoshop format. GIMP is open-source software, so it's developed continuously, and there are many powerful plugins available. Personally, the Gimp Animation Package is an exceptional solution to create GIFs. It runs extremely well on a standard HP workstation and also helps our business by outputting our finished projects in a variety of formats (.jpg, .png, .pdf, etc.). Once I discovered GIMP years ago, I have never looked back at Abode's expensive suite of image editing software. Cons There are some additional plug-ins needed to help manage detailed image compression options when saving files. This is important to our business because of limitations that exist when placing media on our company website. Out of the box, GIMP did not include a few features that allowed us to compress items for the web exactly right; but it was easy to find the plug-in needed and install it quickly. I’m a business owner and because I recently started I don’t have the money yet to pay a graphic designer, so I use gimp to create my logo and marketing images. Pros Support for LOTS of kinds of media files and a very robust graphics application suite. The UI scheme is very easy on the eyes, and there's very little you couldn't do in GIMP compared to expensive graphics suites. Cons Not a con but I would like to see GIMP increase its support for as many types of media files as possible Reason for choosing GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) I use GIMP in tandem with other products but I use it increasingly. Particularly I use GIMP for processing WEBP image files which are blocked in Adobe. Note to Adobe, increasing that sort of blocking will drive me away from that company. Note to GIMP, thank you from creators and media developers for not actively interfering with the creative process in the same way. WEBP indicates a secure file however it should be up to creative teams to employ ethical standards. WEBP is a flawed standard and blocking it like some companies do would be a flawed protocol. Thank you for retaining the process of creative integrity. I have to use these files sometimes from client pages that would otherwise take many extra steps and days to procure. There are still times when its capabilities are necessary, though, and GIMP is always there as a backup or, at times, for as an extended use tool. At some point, I will abandon paid alternatives and dedicate myself to the program. Pros The best thing about GIMP is that it offers pretty much any capability you might need to edit/manipulate images on any platform (linux, mac or Windows) for free. If you don't do much, or have a pretty deep understanding of the principles behind working with images, GIMP is a magnificent value. Cons The only real con with GIMP is the fact that the learning curve is relatively steep compared to alternatives. GIMP was used as an introductory software in classes I took in High School and gave me a foundation to build off of. Once you are familiar with the tools and layout of the program, you can do just as much as you can with Adobe programs. Things are easy to navigate and figure out for the most part. Cons There are some quirky elements to the navigation of the program as things aren't always where you'd expect to find them in the menus. Pros I like the cost factor most about the software. It's free and it gives you all the tools needed to edit photos on the go. I use it for making the images for my marketing campaigns at my car dealership. I often get asked who I pay to make my marketing creatives and I tell them I made them at not cost using GIMP. It allows you to create jaw dropping graphics and edit some of the main image extensions. Takes time to learn but once you figure out your way around GIMP it's smooth sailing. Cons I can't say too much bad about the software because it is free but it has a very basic interface and it takes time to learn how to use it. It is free but also does not have a good UI. Pros As a software developer myself, I like that GIMP is an open source software available for free for everybody. It provides many features for editing images such as scaling, changing colors, removing background or editing it. It is possible to export the image in different extensions such as png, jpg or svg. Cons Unfortunately, GIMP does not come with a good UI and UX (user experience). Firstly, in the last versions it stopped working correctly on Ubuntu operating system and you cannot open files inside GIMP. It throws a permission issue.
