Pros If you can't shell out a couple hundred dollars for Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, etc. Gimp is a decent alternative that provides most of the essentials for photo editing and graphic design. It's interface is relatively easy to use and doesn't take long to master. Cons It doesn't have the same functionalities and tools that are standard with Adobe software, but this is expected with GIMP being free. It does exactly what I need it to, and, so far, I have been happy with it. Pros GIMP has several of the same features as many of the paid photo editing software available, but it is free. It works great and I have been able to use it for exactly what I need to use it for - advanced photo editing. Cons It does take some time to learn the in and outs of it. The layout is slightly different than Adobe Photoshop, so if you are accustomed to that, you might find yourself going back and forth a bit. It has a lot of tools and I can do a wide variety manipulations with my images. Cons Sometimes you need to spend a lot of time to perform some simple edits in your image. And, for example, in Paint you can perform it much more quickly. Also, I often face the problem of fonts in Gimp. I can do almost everything I've ever done on rival editing programs with some digging. Cons This often takes some digging. To avoid infringement expect to spend a fair amount of time in tutorials or the Gimp wiki looking for the right tool name for what you are trying to do. Gimp is also free making it easily accessible for anyone to use while providing a similar level of quality compared to photoshop. Cons Gimp feels much slower than Photoshop in terms of processing pictures as well as just running the program itself. I use it on my 2012 macbook and it works great. While my old version of photoshop stopped working due to osX udpates Gimp kept working. I do very basic photo editing and it does the trick for me. Save your money and get Gimp Cons The UI is a little dated but it is also opensource so you have to love that. Not a lot to hate about people writing software that I can use for free.
