As a professional developer I work with industry leading software every day, and this is a great offering for people needing good quality without the custom needs of larger clients Cons Cant really throw any stones. If the question is about the free product particularly...then there isnt a downside to the tools, as they are robust and easy to use. The results are clean and modern and nothing shy of a great deal at the rate of no invested cash. Reason for choosing Wix Again this is usually a client choice but I enjoy using it when it is their requested solution. I no longer push to get clients on another platform, as the WIX tools are fine for most things needed. I have yet to have a real gripe and usual result is I push the clients to get a paid account as my only advice for changing the path. I have only run into a few issues in that time with some 3rd party apps being discontinued or malfunctioning. Pros What I like the most about Wix is the amount of add-ons and customizations they have available. I am a freelance graphic designer and whenever a client wants me to design a website I ALWAYS suggest Wix first because I know I will have the most options for creating a design and subsequently getting them what they want for their website. Their site is also very user friendly and has a great user interface. It makes it really user for first-timers to create a professional looking website. Lastly, they offer most of their services/add-on for free. Cons One thing I don't like much about Wix is that you can't pay month to month to have a domain, you must pay up front for a year in order to receive a domain. Sometimes that just isn't feasible for people. You can purchase a domain elsewhere and use it with Wix but it would be nice to not have to take an extra step. Also, since Wix allows a lot of 3rd party apps on their sites, it sometimes becomes a nuisance to try to maintain websites and make sure non of the 3rd party apps have been disabled or are down for some reason. I wish there were some type of monitoring system Wix had to notify users when certain apps are down or malfunctioning. Cons Customer support ! When I first started with this product you could get VERY QUICK support for your questions. I was with them for almost 13 years, Their support is ABSALUTELY GARBAGE. If you do not wish to create websites from scratch, simply pick one of the templates, edit the photos/ text and you can build your own version in no time. If all you need to do is launch a simple site that provides some information and adds the air of legitimacy to a new business by having a website, then it's definitely your answer. Cons Wix does a lot of stuff for you and does a very good job of letting people have flexibility in how they want their site designed. Unfortunately, the web has many standards and practices, that Wix tramples over in the same of ease of use. The URLs / permalinks: You can't alter these from using AJAX. And Google hates to index Ajax urls. If you want to build something big/powerful in terms of a web business, you're not going to "outgrow" Wix, because you can't just redirect Ajax links to a new professionally developed site, and your search engine ranking will be hurt. The mobile design: Everything is going towards mobile design, and it's impossible to alter this effectively for these users. Dealing with desktop design first vs mobile is becoming antiquated very quickly. Wix is a fantastic solution for someone like a local dentist wanting to show hours and a couple pictures of people faces. But because it doesn't let you grow out of it easily, and because it doesn't play well with Google, anyone wanting to build something serious or long term may want to reconsider Wix. Many pre-designed professional templates are available to help you get started, or you can create from a blank canvas, if you are up for that challenge. If you have and eye for design you can fairly easily get a site up and running quickly by customizing a template to your liking. Pros What you see is what you get user-interface makes designing a website easy without any coding knowledge. I often know what I want to create, but lack the coding knowledge to make it. Wix helped our organization create a full website, complete with products, FAQ section, and rich media product pages that looks highly professional and saved us thousands of dollars vs. paying an agency to create it. Cons No live customer support phone number. They have an expansive FAQ section, but any issues you may run into you can't just pick up the phone and easily correct. It's all done via e-mail/support tickets. I've built several websites on this platform and always get great results. There are hundreds of templates to choose from and they are easy to customize. I also love that Wix keeps up with trends and sends helpful hints via email when new options become available. They seem to be ahead of the curve. They've recently introduced a different way to build a website. Instead of picking the template and customizing, the software asks questions about the web page and company, establishes your preferences in color and style - then builds the website for you. It's revolutionary and I love the results. My clients have all loved this new option and it saves me a ton of time. This option is easy to customize too and the layouts the software picks are very modern. I also love all the add ons you can put on the website. I use the social feeds, blogging, event registration forms, and photo gallery add ons frequently. Cons My only real criticism of Wix is that many of the add-ons offer basic functions, however in order to get true functionality you have to pay for the add-on. I've encountered this a lot in the event registrations, forms, booking, and social feeds. I often find myself rethinking putting add ons on the website because the free version almost never has all the functions I need. I understand Wix is a business however and needs to find additional sources of revenue. I am not saying they are entry level providers, I mean that they offer entry level website feature sets. Because I had no experience building websites, I chose WIX over Wordpress. I thought Wordpress was a lot of work to learn. My site needs some functionality but it is not complex site. I also did not need an ecommerce site because I am not involved in ecommerce. So I chose WIX. I love WIX. I love the beauty of its templates, I love the flexibility of its design. I am not using the AI feature so I don't know anything about it. The WIX tutorials are some of the best I have ever used. The knowledge base answers nearly every question. I would recommend it to others and I would use it again. But for a different kind of website. Th big problem with WIX is they do not give you access to their source code. Also, if you want to add apps to your site, you must select from their app market. I will say there is a good selection that seems to be growing but what happens is that you end up cobbling together the available apps in order to offer additional services i.e. surveys, instruction manuals, ebooks, free trials and so forth. And WIX offers no live support. You must rely on the support of the app providers, many of whom are very good, I will say. But you can't change WIX. After many intensive months of learning WIX and its app market, I realized I could have learned Wordpress and had much easier time integrating apps from a much wider selection, as in - almost anything. So buying WIX depends on your needs. My website offers a lot of educational experiences and materials, so Wordpress would probably have been better, but WIX is enough. First figure out what functionality you need for your website, then look over the WIX app market to see what is available, then decide. Also WIX's blog is still fairly new and is a bit quirky. But if I were selling arts, food, jewelry, clothing, beautiful things, then I would say WIX all the way. Pros Beautiful, easy to use templates Cons Limited to using only the apps in their app market. Wix has pungent colors and professional designs. Compared to other websites was boring colors and outdated designs.
