The numerous connections with the social media platforms and the ability to create reports in a fast, efficient & scalable way are the most important benefits of the platform. Cons Although our experienced team members are able to create Looker reports from scratch, the newest members need numerous training sessions to understand how the platform works and how they can use it to create custom reports. Therefore it is a strong choice, particularly for reporting automation and visualisation Pros Looker allows for you to create automated and visual reports that you can use to refer back to for use within the team as well as wider reporting to superiors/clients. It has a wide variety of features and being able to tailor dashboards exactly how you would like them gives the freedom to make reports bespoke to your needs Cons It can be quite fiddly to get set up with multiple data sources, and once there are issues, if they are not promptly sorted, they can compromise the accuracy report/dashboard. Thanks to it, we can calculate our ROI better and make decisions accordingly. Pros Reports and dashboards are extremely simple to set up with Looker. It removed our need to ask for data all the time because it doesn't require much technical knowledge to be able to learn how to use it and we can all quickly fetch and chart most data with it on our own. By enabling us to organise and construct dashboards to handle data from several sources in one location, it has significantly reduced the amount of time and effort we have to expend. It now has a considerable impact on decision-making that is BI driven, so far. Pros It allows several users to use and perform actions on the same amount of data available without affecting each others work. Enables us in creating compelling dashboards, meaningful reports with its set of internal tools, flexibility with its customization of the platform as per user's liking, keeping the data safe that is sensitive to the business with advanced encryption, user access control. Cons A little complex on the integration part with other system softwares is what I noticed as a struggle in my work environment. Also some issues with the buffer, when the command is run again and again after creating the reports. Sr Planning Analyst Used the software for: 1-2 years ### "Controlled Analytics Exploration" May 17, 2018 3.0 Like I said, it's a great tool for analysts that don't need a lot of flexibility or maybe just aren't used to working with a lot of data. To get the full value out of this software, you'll need a core group of experienced Data Analysts that can learn fast (to learn Lookers Table Calculation code which is similar to SQL) who can build a bunch of dashboards and views. You really don't want people who aren't savvy with data doing a lot of the creating because measures are always aggregated based on the dimensions you pull into each table...if a user forgets to add a specific dimension then measures could show the wrong value. This could be offset by having really good developers who architect the data in a way that doesn't allow this to happen. Pros It's a great data exploration tool for users who normally would get anxious when given a large dataset in something like Excel. It's generally simple to use and there can be unlimited Viewers (users at the lowest permissions level) through the enterprise product. Data Visualization is essentially done for you and Exploers (users at the second level of permissions) can build new visualizations & turn them into interactive dashboards. On the Looker platform, Explorers can locate a view (called an Explore) and then are given a list of dimensions and measures they can pull into a table. Users can create new dimensions using calculated fields and then save their views so any users with Viewer permissions (and up) can see what was put together. Cons With simplicity comes lack of flexibility. More skilled data analysts will want more flexibility than Looker can provide but at the same time you need to have highly skilled Data Analysts to be the Developers (high level of permissions) to set up the data so that less skilled analysts (the users who benefit from Looker most) who are Explorers don't build views that grossly misrepresent the data. My biggest pet peeve with this software as an Explorer is that you cannot make calculations on the base data...only the data that you pull into your table (called table calculations). That is a major feature that Tableau has that Looker does not have at the Explorer permission level. Of course developers can use LookML (Lookers data language) to create a new column...but a Developer license is more expensive and creating the fields take time and it's something you constantly will need. It is very easy to learn for an individual. It is user friendly as well. Overall good experience from the tool. It is way better than Tableau and Qlik. Pros First and foremost, the most important feature of Looker is, it is cloud based BI tool which can be accessed remotely and easy to work unless like other tools where it requires to be installed in the PC.It has clean and simple UI which is very to build dashboards and reports.Lookml option provides benefit of flexibility in code which in turn help to create own metrics and create calculations. This helps for the marketer or developer to have the control of the metrics Data modelling is very easy to create and Looker has the capacity to sync with various connectors to access the data from other sources, which solves the use case of having 3rd party connectors. Cons The new interface of swapping between read-only and developer is not that great. The older version was better as compared to the new one. Customer support is gone from good to bad. When I had queries , customer support team could not help as they themselves were not aware of the tool and also they share articles which are available with google search to diagnose.The codes should have an option to export to PDF. I usually share the reports with the live link so users can get live updates every day but sometimes i download a PDF with the report for certain people. Data import is easy and can be done manually or automatically. Pros When it comes to make reports I use only Looker. The option to automatically import data from different sources makes my reports always updated. I usually make graphs and charts with all the data I need and share the reports with my superiors and colleagues who needs these information. My one hesitation in recommending it is that other tools seemed to be able to provide 80% of the value at 20% of the cost, but I've only demoed those tools and not actually used them so I'm not sure if they could actually deliver. Pros Looker is incredibly easy to use for a casual user, which most of our users are. As soon as your email is activated, you have access to the product and new users need very little direction to start getting value out of it. Cons Relative to other BI tools, the advanced charting functionality is somewhat limited, but frankly that's not the main reason we bought Looker. Data scientists can use another tool of their choice, we have Looker for people who aren't data scientists. Reason for choosing Looker LookML gave Looker an advantage because it allowed us to pre-define a framework for our users to need. We didn't feel Chartio did this quite as well. Looker is also better funded and I felt more confident that they would continue to add features and fill in gaps in the product in the future. Switched from [Tableau](https://www.capterra.com/p/208764/Tableau/) Tableau is an antiquated architecture (permanent license desktop app) and was going to be prohibitively expensive to roll out to the whole company. Cons It is not the most user friendly tool and can have performance issues around loading. There are definitely other BI tools that have prioritised UX which helps drive data literacy across our business. With Looker, we've struggled to get non-data people into the tool to really use it as they find it hard to use without significant training. Pros Customization is one of the best parts of looker. Having the ability to fit the data to the required details through filters is handy. You can add/remove or filter data as you wish. The platform also has multiple types of visualizing and also the option to downloading the data in various forms. Cons The platform is great, but in sometimes, during high traffic, the process is prolonged. It takes forever to load a look or dashboard. Cons Not necessarily a ‘con’ as such, but your dashboards look as good as you are a designer; I’ve seen some incredible dashboards built by colleagues and peers and also seen some truly terrible ones; the flexibility of the tool means you do need to have a basic grasp of data analysis and visualisation. The interface allows us to easily train customers and colleagues on how to use and manipulate the data, even if a user does not have any SQL experience. Finalized dashboards and looks provide us with visually appealing metrics. Cons There are some limitations to custom calculations/ dimensions that can trip our users up when trying to manipulate data on their own. This pre-built connection to link your data from Google Sheets to the platform simplifies the process significantly. Paired with a kick-ass centralized data warehouse (we use Snowflake), Looker lets us roll things out very quickly (provided our data infrastructure is in good shape). It did take a while to get going with Looker because it lays on top of the existing data infrastructure. Now that we have quite a bit of strong infrastructure in place in our centralized data warehouse, we are able to produce data products in Looker quite quickly. Pros Provisioning security allows us to control the user experience (and only show users things they would actually care about). This makes a dashboard or data product rollout far smoother. Additionally, the customer support (especially through the chat interface) is absolutely fantastic. Because Looker creates a custom URL for each explore you're working on, you can share with Customer Support your exact problem and work together to find a solution. Cons Looker Sales told us beforehand that it "writes the most performant SQL possible." I have not found this to be the case, as it often casts and does a few other things (I suspect to make it runnable no matter how you've set up your data).
