Pros: Freely available, the software is easy to use for those familiar with Microsoft Office. It's also easy to use on multiple platforms including Linux.

Cons: It is beginning to look a little dated and lacks some of the features available elsewhere, though given its free, there's little reason to complain.

Pros: Excellent set of programs that allows me to work any file related to office automation (Spreadsheets, Word Processor, Design of presentations, Generation of flow charts and flowcharts, Home database, etc.) very easy to install and use. It can be installed in any operating system (Window, Linuz or Mac)

Cons: There is very little to say about weaknesses, as many benefits are obtained with this suite. But there is a detail that must be solved, such as the loss of format of files from other similar programs. Sometimes you have to redo them, since they distort a lot.

Overall: I can install it on low-level computers and I do not have to pay expensive licenses.

Pros: I use Open Office on my Kali Linux laptop. It is free, and so far I have not found anything that it could not do that MS Office can. It is a must have for Linux users that prefer OpenOffice over LibreOffice.

Cons: Some VBA macros that I have tried with Impress just simply will not run. This is not a deal breaker, but it can be very frustrating.

Overall: OpenOffice allows me to have a full office suite for zero cost on my Kali Linux machine and because if this I do not have to switch to my mac or my MS laptop when I need to write something or create a presentation.

Manageable program, besides being a free option.

Pros: OpenOffice can be downloaded and used completely at no cost or pay licenses. In short, it means that any project (commercial, educational or even public administration, can be installed on as many computers as you wish), is easy to install and very easy to use.

Cons: Although I have little time using it, I have no complaint about OpenOffice, it is not a secret that it is a unique and complete software program, everything works articulately between the different applications.

Overall: So simple that with a single download from the Internet or installing it from a CD, you will have a multipurpose tool in your home or office.

Pros: The lack of paid registration. Perform the same functions as Excel. Easy to use. Open office Calc is a good program for working with tables, which has impressive functionality. The program is suitable for both home and office use.

Cons: I found not too much cons. Just with a large amount of data (with complex formulas) it freezes or crashes sometimes.

Pros: The best thing about the OpenOffice program is that it can be downloaded and used completely free of charge without paying licenses, it is released under a license. This means that any commercial, educational, and public administration project can be installed on as many computers as possible. since you can make copies and distribute them without any expense, it is easy to install and very manageable, OpenOffice is completely accessible for beginners, it is simpler than updating to Microsoft Office 2007. Since OpenOffice is a unique and complete software program, everything works articulately between the different applications. Even the help system is the same for everything. You do not need to know which application has been used to create a document, it will always be used correctly. So simple that with a single download from the Internet or installing it from a CD you will have a multipurpose tool in your home or office.

Cons: It can be said that he lost the rhythm of the updates, and no progress has been seen in his evolution, likewise he makes greater use of memory and CPU since it is heavier and wider than other programs and this has the consequence that work slower.

Pros: I frequently use Calc (and sometimes Writer) on my Linux system where I do not have access to MS-office products. It (Clac) gets the job done more or less. It is easy to use and adopt.

Cons: It does not looks as clean as other propitiatory software. Also recently I found it more useful to push my data to Google sheets and use APP scripts to work with my data (that is if my data is not so large that will hit APP script execution restrictions)

Pros: I like the fact that this is free and generally very easy to use. It's been my go to software for Excel and general word documents until I discovered Libreoffice (as mentioned below.) Easy on system resources and highly functional. Easy to recommend!

Cons: I used this primarily as a substitution for Excel until I found it to be finicky and not cooperating with some of my file types. I now use this in conjunction with Libreoffice. If a file doesn't work in one I try it in the other. Generally I can get one or the other to open everything.

It is free!!!. If you just need a simple excel and word, it is great

Pros: - it is free and legal
- you have the basics but most useful features of microsoft office
- There is large community supporting it

Cons: - Some features like copy paste in excel (calc) are not user friendly (looks like excel 97)
- Dictionaries and corrections are not intuitive, you need to do some research to make them work properly
- Sofisticated features are not that user friendly, like pivot tables

Pros: OpenOffice is a solid alternative to Microsoft Office. It covers all the basic nessecities, such as a word processor, presentation creator, and spreadsheet program.

Cons: I believe that LibreOffice is a better alternative these days. The team is better and the open source code helps those ambitious enough to try and fix their own issues.

Pros: The direct descendant of old StarOffice, but now under the relaxed licensing/distribution of an Apache license. It handles large, complicated documents that are slow or broken using cloud-based tools, and without the heavy baggage and high cost of Microsoft desktop suites.

Cons: Compared to the competing forks (notably LibreOffice), OpenOffice has a very slow, irregular release schedule. The UI hasn't seen serious care or attention in a while, making your 2018 version look awful much the same as it did years ago. There's no decent updater, requiring a manual process for each release.

Pros: It works on different Windows, Mac and Linux operating systems. It's assistant functions is quite friendly and similar to other softwares, you can also pivot table with a friendly assistant. It has advanced functions such as VLOOKUP and conditional formatting. Read different types of files including xls, xlsx and csv.

Cons: The visual interface I do not like, it is not updated to new trends. It has been installed with the OpenOffice suite. The graphics that are generated are of low quality. There is not much documentation of the problems, when one appears it is hard.

Overall: It is the best free alternative that can be found, with OpenOffice Calc you will not have problems when making your works in spreadsheets and do not worry about the compatibility with other software, it can be highly compatible. And the best thing about this is that it's free!

Pros: For a free program this software offers a plethora of different features and functions. I enjoyed using the word processor but I also really like that it offers a spreadsheet engine with a spreadsheet calculator as well.

Cons: The developer should try to make this software more stable as I've had problems with this app freezing on multiple occasions. It also doesn't Translate well spreadsheet documents with different extensions either.

Pros: Both in the case of OpenOffice and excel, I have notified the developers very specific problems with which I have found. In the case of OpenOffice the developers once they verified with the information that I sent, that the problem really existed, not only made the necessary adjustments to the program, but they contacted me back thanks for my contribution. In the case of Microsoft, that has never happened and when I have seen new versions I have verified that the problem I reported is still valid.
It consumes far less machine resources than Microsoft software. (approximately half according to my estimates).

Cons: Accepting the reality that most of the users (including my person) use mostly Microsoft software, it is necessary a period of adaptation to use the program, since the buttons, functions and general structure are presented with menus sometimes quite different from the excel, although we are fair: whenever you change the program, or version thereof, you need a period of adaptation to use it again efficiently.
For me it is more important the fact that it "hangs up" from time to time, especially when you import and modify a document from Office.
I have not asked why it happens, because it could be that it was even done on purpose, simply so that each time you use less the program of the competition, a strategy that is otherwise valid.

Overall: The biggest benefit that OpenOffice has brought me is associated with its wide compatibility with different operating systems (Linux, Windows, Mac, etc.), unlike other similar programs (like Microsoft), designed only to operate with only one type of operating system.
That, added to the fact that it is free, makes its handling and installation in a good number of PC, very versatile.

Pros: Calc has been great for importing various file formats and can also handle importing CSVs in a very flexible manner.

It was easy to use and the forums often got me out of trouble when seeking support or a how-to guide.

Cons: Instability of the desktop app cost us a lot of time and eventually forced us to move away from it. All the while, it wasn't able to export .xslx files, even if it could open them, which was a handicap and concerned me that our reputation would be affected because it appeared we were using outdated software if only able to export as .xls.

Overall: OpenOffice Calc helped us avoid spending on purchasing commercial software for which this was a suitable replacement for quite some time.

Pros: The freedom and ability to do more than one can with Microsoft products. This program is similar but actually easier to use, and also free of charge. Open source program, by the users, for the users.

Cons: Only con I have is that if you have that akward employee or friend or classmate or whoever that insists on using microsoft(pity them) the programs do not easily read the other programs files on the computer, however there is no issue converting it on my phone(Android) for whatever reason.

Overall: Better user experience and easier for the user to navigate than other programs, also totally free.

Pros: First and foremost, I love that this is open source. Free is a price that's hard to argue with. On top of that, the software works very well and is reliable. I love that this software supports the Microsoft file types.

Cons: If someone sends over a document created in a different software, I find that it will sometimes (very rarely) have trouble with formatting, but if it is important, I usually want to receive it as a PDF instead of a DOC anyway.

Pros: It does eventually do what it's supposed to...most of the time... The program functions like a basic notepad program, except with better import and export capabilities and a more expansive user interface. You can change the layout of your document, the font, color, header/footer, margins, etc. Another nice thing is that the product is free.

Cons: The load times for document importing and exporting seem quite excessive. It's just not efficient in that sense. Also, many times the software will crash upon opening a new document. I haven't been able to figure out why, as it doesn't always do this. Essentially, the software seems quite buggy and slow, and isn't really suited for a fast paced business environment.

Pros: The price is right, at free, you can't really complain. I like that I can do different templates, spreadsheets, and many other things with this product!

Cons: I keep having an issue with trying to do a customizable calendar. Keeps asking for some type of filter, and I cannot turn it off, turns it into computer text instead of what I need. But it's not a consistent problem, sometimes it does it, sometimes works like a charm.

You get what you pay for!

Pros: Apache provides very similar features/functions to Microsoft Office. It allows you to create documents almost exactly like Microsoft Word, presentations are fairly simple to create. If you are at all familiar with Microsoft Office, you'll pick up Apache products quickly. If not, there may be somewhat of a learning curve to tackle.

Cons: If you're looking to do massive amounts of word processing, this may not be the best option. I encountered bugs on occasion with an older version. Many people in college would use it for creating basic papers, but for bigger projects, something more complex was needed.
Exporting mailer lists is a bit of a challenge. Word/excel will do it very quickly, whereas this tends to fall short.

Pros: Does almost everything Office does but doesn't cost anything. If you need a great word substitute, this is where you should go.

Cons: Not all of the functionality you'd find in microsofts office can be found here, but it's not lacking much.

Free cross compatible software.

Pros: Awesome program to use for everyday basic use. We use it a lot to convert files to and from pdf on our Mac. Easily send documents between a Mac and pc.

Cons: Not much to hate about this software. It could probably be set up and designed a little better, but it gets the job done regardless.

Overall: Easy to use free software. Meets all requirements that we need in a word program.

Pros: I love that this process is free. As a student, I used to be pained by the money needed to drop on something just so that I could format text for papers, when the cost was really more for features I would never use. Open Office is the solution. Great for students or organizations, Open Office is a nice little word processor for general files. It has a feel similar to Word or Pages, without the costs that are/were associated with either application. Additionally, it is able to open rich text, plain text, .doc or .pages files without issue, making it a great resource to access files if you have an application that is unable to open it otherwise or recover the text.

Cons: What I like the least about Open Office is how watered down the product is, there are a lot of times I am yearning for a bit more functionality. It can be a bit buggy in our Mac environment, but mostly in the more advanced features, not as much for the general user. 4.1 is a bit unstable, with a lot of crashes, and customer support is harder to navigate through user forums.

Pros: What's not to like about free software that helps you get stuff done? I am glad that there are great developers and companies that are willing to offer software like this for free.

Cons: Some of the functionality and features are not as good as other commercial software, but because this is free I am a lot more willing to over look those limitations. One feature that is sorely missing is some kind of collaborative editor. I have had to use online document programs to get this capability

Overall: I get increased productivity by being able to create presentations, documents, and spreadsheets without having to pay a lot of money.

Hey, it's Free, you'll always get more than what you pay for.

Pros: It's nice for people who don't want to spend the money for Office. It gives another option that's free and fairly intuitive. And as long as everyone you know uses OpenOffice (or if you only send .PDF files), you'll never have formatting issues.

Cons: As alluded to above, one of the major problems I've faced in the past when using OpenOffice, is the inability (in some cases) to have Microsoft Word open an OpenOffice file without making it look like a 1st grader tried formatting the document. Given that this is an open source code, the formatting issues and correction time might make buying Microsoft Office a more viable option.

Overall: Free ability to have lots of functionality - just don't share any working documents with people because most companies only have Office.

Pros: Open Office is a product that serves as a replacement for MicroSoft Office Suite for those who can't afford the MS brand. You can save files as MS Word documents if you need to share the electronic files with others. It feels like Word and it looks a lot like Word.

Cons: I can be hard to find what your looking for within the UI and that is mostly because I am used to Microsoft Word so there is an initial learning curve.

Overall: The benefit is to have a full word processor, spreadsheets, presentation suite for free without having to pay for a Microsoft subscription.

Pros: Does everything that others do and more, great price! Offers many features other pay software does not.

Cons: Not more widely supported base file formats, I would also like to see better support for adding videos and media to files and presentations.
