"Affordable and full featured"

**Overall:** A slight learning curve, but in the end a very reliable and rebost system. Have gone through 3 major upgrades with no problems. I prefer a DIY approach to something like Teams under Microsoft control.

**Pros:** Running on a VPS, the free version is super cheap for unlimited users. Supports all major client platforms including browser.

**Cons:** Updates can be a probem, and sometimes user's options for 'auto update check' and 'system tray color' seem to get lost.

**Alternatives Considered:** [Slack](https://www.capterra.com/p/135003/Slack/)

**Reasons for Choosing Mattermost:** Mattermost was self-hosted, and much less complicated than Slack. A simpler product.

**Switched From:** [Microsoft Teams](https://www.capterra.com/p/168668/Microsoft-Teams/)

**Reasons for Switching to Mattermost:** Teams became difficult to manage in our secured environment. Recently (early 2025) Microsoft cloud has had numerous issues which do NOT affect out MatterMost setup.

"Mattermost, open-source but not that great"

**Pros:** Open-source, easily installable. Quite fast.

**Cons:** Not so great working with threads, chats are messed up. Some competitors do much better in this regard (zulip)
