## FAQs about Azure DevOps

Overview

### What problems does Azure DevOps solve?

Azure DevOps solves scattered development workflows, manual deployments, weak release controls, and poor visibility from backlog to production. It centralizes boards, repos, testing, and CI/CD pipelines, reducing status chasing and deployment errors. Developers, QA teams, Scrum teams, product owners, and distributed IT organizations benefit most.

Answer based on 97 reviews

Overview

### Which roles and teams benefit most from Azure DevOps?

Azure DevOps is most used by software developers, software engineers, and DevOps teams that need source control, CI/CD pipelines, testing, and release automation. System engineers, architects, and technical leads use it to manage infrastructure and delivery standards, while product managers, project managers, and owners track backlogs, sprints, and cross-team progress.

My overall experience with Azure DevOps has been positive, especially when working on professional software projects that require strong collaboration, security, and automation. It provides a reliable foundation for managing everything from initial planning to production deployment. The setup process requires some learning, but once configured, it becomes a powerful tool for development teams. I especially appreciate the deployment capabilities because pipelines can automate repetitive tasks and provide consistent releases across different environments. The code management features work well for teams using Git workflows, and the integration with cloud services makes it suitable for modern applications. I also see value in how Azure DevOps fits into AI-assisted development environments, where teams can combine automation, analytics, and AI tools to improve productivity. While the platform could improve its simplicity and make onboarding easier, it remains a strong choice for organizations building and maintaining complex software solutions.

Pros

What I like most about Azure DevOps is that it provides a complete platform for managing the entire software development lifecycle in one place. The integration between Boards, Repos, Pipelines, and Test Plans makes it easier for teams to plan, develop, and release software without needing many disconnected tools. Building POC's sometimes we need all the tools. The CI/CD pipeline experience is one of the strongest features because it allows us to automate builds, testing, and deployments with flexibility. I also like how Azure DevOps works well with modern AI development workflows. It can be integrated with AI services, automated testing tools, and code quality tools to help developers improve productivity. The search capabilities across work items, repositories, and files are useful when working on large projects. Code management through Git repositories is reliable, and the permission controls make collaboration safer for enterprise teams. Overall, it saves time by bringing development, deployment, and project tracking into a single environment.

Cons

The biggest challenge with Azure DevOps is that the platform can feel complex when setting it up for the first time. New users may need time to understand the relationship between organizations, projects, repositories, pipelines, agents, and permissions. Some configuration areas require technical knowledge, especially when creating advanced YAML pipelines or managing deployment environments. The learning curve is higher compared to simpler project management tools. The search experience is helpful but could be improved when looking across large amounts of code, documentation, and work items. File management and artifact handling can sometimes feel less intuitive compared to dedicated storage solutions. Although Azure DevOps supports automation and integrates well with AI-powered development tools, some newer AI-assisted experiences require additional setup and configuration. More built-in AI assistance for troubleshooting pipeline failures, suggesting improvements, and explaining errors would make the platform easier for developers.

Azure DevOps boards provide Agile teams with backlog and sprint management features to keep track and ensure good team collaboration. Although the interface is simple sharing templates and duplicating backlogs is manual and convoluted.

Pros

Project tracking, automation of releases and collaboration for teams makes this product attractive for small or medium sized projects.

Cons

No capability to reuse backlogs as templates and limited reporting features are limitations that frustrate users.

Azure DevOps helped us to manage large, complex software projects and products to deliver fast, enhance alignment and clarity between various stakeholders, + boost transparency across the organization.

Pros

What a product, taking the best of multiple worlds. Happy to be able to deploy our business and enable user stories through the project timeline by visualizing the progress of the flow and measurements are of the hook by observing the data trend and dissecting it from one iteration to another with management. Quite a customized setup to be tailored to your job environment, helping teams and customers to be in 1 environment with the right support, maintenance, and progress overview. Fast learning curve for teams to be onboarded.

Cons

Some rigidity in the customization, but quite good in general to be able to lead an agile project lifecycle management and a lean mentality to track flow and improve on measurements, visualizing data trends and artifacts from user stories, to features, to Portfolio Epics.

I would avoid using Azure DevOps if there is a choice, but often there isn't much choice if you want to stay entirely within Microsoft/Azure ecosystem.

Pros

Very featureful and covers most enterprise use case, with deep integration in Azure eco-system.

Cons

Developer ergonomics and ease-of-use are poor compared to common options like Github / Gitlab.

Pros

The click and drag task management function was intuitive and satisfying.

Cons

DevOps was clearly made for software developers. The average business professional would have a huge learning curve trying to adjust to this platform. I used it for over a year and still didn't know how to use 90% of its capabilities. I'm sure it's a powerful tool; it's just not user friendly or intuitive.

Azure DevOps Services provides an integrated environment for managing software development projects from planning through deployment. In my organization is essential.

Pros

Azure DevOps Services is a comprehensive platform designed to facilitate Application Lifecycle Management (ALM), offering a suite of tools that support every phase of software development. This review synthesizes user experiences and highlights the key features, benefits, and challenges associated with Azure DevOps.

Cons

In reporting it could be better, delivering reports on pipelines, Azure Repost, and agents. There is great room for improvement to monitor and control projects.

It's my favourite DevOps tool, it's always good to see when a client uses Azure DevOps over other tools

Pros

The sheer amount of possibilities the product offers. I love the fact that your git repos and agile task management is in the same place, it's very easy to link tickets to repo branches. Merging branches works very good.

Cons

Some pages (like retrospectives) don't auto-refresh which can be quite annoying. You should also be careful with some changes as it may affect a lot of tickets and can result in a lot of manual labour to fix things.
