### "Microsoft's one stop shop for planning, task, code, versions and releases management"

September 21, 2023

5.0

If I get a say in the selection of tooling before starting the project, Azure DevOps is my go to.

Pros

It's a full suite usable directly as is with very little configuration needed to get a jump start. Customizations and integrations are still possible though. I like the work experience better with Azure DevOps board rather than one of the competing backlog/task management suites.

Cons

The Azure DevOps Boards seems a bit forgotten/sunsetting tool but hopefully there would be still future new features and enhancements to make it even better.Git approvals workflow really should be much more seamless so that either work from developer and approver perspective is only done in Git and automatically reflects to Azure DevOps tasks/work items. Or other way around, approval requests would get populated as task on board and moving it to done column would automatically approve pull request in Git. There is some still unlocked potential there with integration and seamless working experience.

Works well with Microsoft other products, identity/access management and nowadays supports Git.

### "A fantastic offering for small development teams"

September 26, 2023

5.0

We've improved a number of key workflows with Azure DevOps and it's proved to be an invaluable addition to our software development cycle.

Pros

The service provides a lot under the one package, task management, source control, CI/CD, and release pipelines. If you are a small team or just starting off, you'll be able to take advantage of it all for either free, or very little money. It's clearly designed to get teams hooked on Azure and it does this job well.

Cons

The UI is clunky in places, task management specifically leaves a lot to be desired. While the close integration with source control is fantastic, editing and navigating between tasks take far too long and you're much more likely to avoid doing it or take a lot longer to complete a simple job.

### "Not terrible if you have to use it"

February 17, 2025

3.0

I would avoid using Azure DevOps if there is a choice, but often there isn't much choice if you want to stay entirely within Microsoft/Azure ecosystem.

Pros

Very featureful and covers most enterprise use case, with deep integration in Azure eco-system.

Cons

Developer ergonomics and ease-of-use are poor compared to common options like Github / Gitlab.

### "Azure DevOps a smart choice for small projects"

February 11, 2026

4.0

Azure DevOps boards provide Agile teams with backlog and sprint management features to keep track and ensure good team collaboration. Although the interface is simple sharing templates and duplicating backlogs is manual and convoluted.

Pros

Project tracking, automation of releases and collaboration for teams makes this product attractive for small or medium sized projects.

Cons

No capability to reuse backlogs as templates and limited reporting features are limitations that frustrate users.

### "Tools for doubling productivity"

April 9, 2023

4.0

Many plugins and events, such as git repository updates, can be triggered to run builds and tests automatically. By continuously building and testing, it is possible to detect deviations and defects early and improve the quality and efficiency of development.

Pros

The functionality can be extended with add-ons; since there are many add-ons, you can do a wide range of things. Being able to do certain things even when engineers are not present also helps to keep the product running stably.

Cons

I would be happy if the manual to consult when I don't understand the operation is a little more complete.

Alternatives considered

[GitLab](https://www.capterra.com/p/159806/GitLab/)

Reason for choosing Azure DevOps

It can be quickly introduced. Creating a CI/CD environment can be done promptly, which has doubled development productivity. In addition, static source analysis is now possible when the source is confirmed.

### "Top end quality "

April 28, 2021

4.0

Very flat learning curve means that everybody can start working with it right from the start, learning more complex things along the way. As a developer you have better things to do than to learn yet another new product that should just be there to support the "real" work (developing). Devops is perfect from that perspective.

Pros

Devops is not just devops... it's total devops. A whole suite of things from release management, build automation, time management, ticketing, scrum and task boarding to source repository. I don't think anything is left out. It's all very much connected, which means for instance that creating a new branche can become a new ticket that is automatically placed on a task board etc.

Cons

I don't think anything is missing, but at some points it's not very intuitive. I still have to search every time to get to specific features of my build and release configuration. Security features are very good, but there too I find myself trying to understand how it works every time again.

Devops is a suite of products, all in one. What we used before was several products that were all installed internally (maintenance nightmare). It's a lot easier to maintain and learn how to use just one product

### "Lean DevOps"

November 4, 2025

4.0

Azure DevOps helped us to manage large, complex software projects and products to deliver fast, enhance alignment and clarity between various stakeholders, + boost transparency across the organization.

Pros

What a product, taking the best of multiple worlds. Happy to be able to deploy our business and enable user stories through the project timeline by visualizing the progress of the flow and measurements are of the hook by observing the data trend and dissecting it from one iteration to another with management. Quite a customized setup to be tailored to your job environment, helping teams and customers to be in 1 environment with the right support, maintenance, and progress overview. Fast learning curve for teams to be onboarded.

Cons

Some rigidity in the customization, but quite good in general to be able to lead an agile project lifecycle management and a lean mentality to track flow and improve on measurements, visualizing data trends and artifacts from user stories, to features, to Portfolio Epics.

### "Azure DevOps Services is essential for ALM"

December 12, 2024

5.0

Azure DevOps Services provides an integrated environment for managing software development projects from planning through deployment. In my organization is essential.

Pros

Azure DevOps Services is a comprehensive platform designed to facilitate Application Lifecycle Management (ALM), offering a suite of tools that support every phase of software development. This review synthesizes user experiences and highlights the key features, benefits, and challenges associated with Azure DevOps.

Cons

In reporting it could be better, delivering reports on pipelines, Azure Repost, and agents. There is great room for improvement to monitor and control projects.

### "It's my favourite DevOps tool"

November 25, 2024

5.0

It's my favourite DevOps tool, it's always good to see when a client uses Azure DevOps over other tools

Pros

The sheer amount of possibilities the product offers. I love the fact that your git repos and agile task management is in the same place, it's very easy to link tickets to repo branches. Merging branches works very good.

Cons

Some pages (like retrospectives) don't auto-refresh which can be quite annoying. You should also be careful with some changes as it may affect a lot of tickets and can result in a lot of manual labour to fix things.

### "DevOps is a Great Platform for Developers, Not the Average Professional"

December 17, 2024

4.0

Pros

The click and drag task management function was intuitive and satisfying.

Cons

DevOps was clearly made for software developers. The average business professional would have a huge learning curve trying to adjust to this platform. I used it for over a year and still didn't know how to use 90% of its capabilities. I'm sure it's a powerful tool; it's just not user friendly or intuitive.

### "Great Project Management Tool"

November 9, 2024

4.0

I love utilizing it and the reporting functionality to push Burn Down and Burn Up charts to gauge team production of past, current and future deployments.

Pros

I love how you can manage multiple projects and maintain a step by step process while being able to view, correct and progress during software development.

Cons

I wish that it integrated with Loop so that you could keep teams updated more efficiently.

### "Azure DevOps as the ALM Tool of Choice"

July 6, 2021

4.0

My organization started with 1 team working for development of applications throughout the ALM cycle. We then standardized this as our ALM tool. We folded in the diverse and stubborn teams into the tool without changing many of their tools or processes. We just put this in as the orchestration. Then we customized the templates to cover a wide variety of scenarios for each of the 100+ teams working the product. Finally, we moved our project management, intake, and agile processes into the tool for a single pane of glass across the board for consolidated enterprise management

Pros

If your company is fully invested in the Microsoft product suite, Azure DevOps is the extension of that investment. It allows direct integration with the Cloud Services in Azure for IaC, CaC, and CI/CD code deployments. It also allows the customization for the workflows for Agile, SCRUM, Kanban, etc... to match up with core source control, testing, along with build and release strategies. Its a one stop shop for each of the core disciplines in IT Teams in the ALM process. If you need extensibility to other platforms outside of Azure, the connectors and integration are available to AWS, Google Cloud, On-premise, etc... It allows your teams to work collectively in 1 platform, but use their "own" tools to deliver (i.e. Java, Jenkins, Linux, etc....).

Cons

Because the platform has so many connectors and integrations, customization becomes challenging. You need advocates and training to customize the "teams" to standardize and integrate with working patterns. The features being added are more Microsoft oriented than development oriented.

### "Manage your tasks and create valuable dashboards with Azure ADO"

June 17, 2022

5.0

We use Azure ADO for tracking our internal tasks and activities. Some teams, also use Azure Artifacts and Azure Pipelines for their CI/CD requirements. The platform has proven pretty solid in terms of performance and since it is backed by Microsoft, security is also taken care of!

Pros

1\. Easy to use console: Azure ADO console is clean and very easy to use. It offers mutiple services like Azure Boards, Azure Artifacts and Azure Pipeline as well. All there features are pretty solid and packed with the required feature set. Integrations are also available to make sure the end user can use multiple tools at the same time. 2. Azure Boards: also offer Kanban style task tracking which is proven to be one of the best task management tool.

Cons

There are no major cons for Azure ADO. It offers all the required feature-set and integrations which is required by any large organisation. API access is also available in case anyone want's to access the services via CLI. We have not observed any lack or disadvantage for Azure ADO so far.

### "One Stop Solution for all DevOps needs"

September 14, 2022

5.0

All in all, I found Azure DevOps Services very useful. It has some of the great features which i have been using daily. It helps me to collaborate with colleagues, track working items, plan sprints, Source code management and Continuous integration/deployment of builds.

Pros

Azure DevOps Services offers various features, I'm using Pipelines(CI/CD), Artifacts, Boards and Repositories mostly. All of the features are very well developed and easy to use. Intensive documentation is offered by Microsoft to learn more about platform's features. Board helps me to track work items. Repositories helps to do peer programming and Pipelines helps to build automatically and deploy. It's integration with other tools like Sonarqube, Ansible and Jenkins are not that hard as well.

Cons

If some of the features comes with learning curve. Apart from that, Microsoft hosted agent pools has its own limitation they are not very useful if we have some special requirements for our project.

### "Awesome solution to deliver projects at scale"

June 14, 2021

4.0

The experience has been very positive and feedback from my coworkers has been positive in how the tool has helped meet the needs of the broader organization. Given that our team operates in an agile sprint environment, we were able to customize and tailor the tool exactly to our needs so that anyone involved or brought into a project mid way through is able to easily go in and find all the tasks associated with an individual project.

Pros

I have most liked the ability to record, track and optimize the processes that go into internal collaboration between developers and projects managers. The ability to track the steps and progress of any development projects and the project hierarchy within the front end interface makes it easy to drill down and view details about any given task in the platform.

Cons

The account manager who has been assigned to help us with customer support has not always been responsive and thorough in providing answers to questions that have some complexities. It was not ideal when needing a faster turn around time for specific development and product needs.

### "VSTS DevOps - A complete solution for pure DevOps. "

October 19, 2018

4.0

VSTS DevOps is helping use to manage team ,code and operation. We are using it with Azure Cloud and the experience is really good. vNext build is able to build the .net Core application easily.

Pros

VSTS DevOps provide the complete integrity with Development and Operational work. The architecture is helping in boosting the development & Operational process. VSTS take care for complete CI/CD pipeline. Best and loving part in it is that it provide freedom in selecting the TFVC or GIT as version controlling. Integrity with Azure Cloud is also good which it make this tool a complete DevOps system so that it can be achieve the deployment part with zero outage. XAML and vNext build help in deployment of 100's servers without any human error, as it just need one time setup for builds.

Cons

Installation architecture of VSTS DevOps having a lot of curves, Build Controller and Gated Build need time to setup and Microsoft should make it easy to under and setup. In last few years I am seeing the changes the it moving towards the web-based application, Console like security and permission are now only available in web base pages only.

### "Highly effective service for maintaining code repository, build & release activity "

February 5, 2022

5.0

It becomes very easy to track and monitor all the project level activities from one platform. Ensures the code quality and continuous integration very effective.

Pros

It is very easy to configure the CI-CD pipelines to make the release build pipelines. Maintaining the efficient code repositories to ease the code management activities. It ensures the different boards for maintaining the different boards across the organization.

Cons

Some of the best services like Time Tracking and Event based triggers are still not included in this product as we need to import it as extensions.

### "Intuitive sprint organization and metrics, mediocre test planning options"

May 18, 2021

5.0

Azure DevOps is an expansive software meant to help manage the full software development life cycle, and it support an agile development environment, from planning to estimating to tracking work, testing and repositories. It accomplishes most of these goals pretty well.

Pros

I find the sprint planning features, dashboard and sprint boards intuitive and convenient. I like being able to organize my tickets and easily see the work of other members of my team.

Cons

I am not a huge fan of the test planning aspect of the program. I find creating test cases to be clunky, even when using the "grid" functionality that allows you to import test cases from a spreadsheet. One example is that when creating a test case using the "grid" feature, if you had multiple line breaks within a single cell in a spreadsheet, it will copy each line break into a separate cell in the grid instead of copying them into a single cell with line breaks as they appeared in the spreadsheet.

### "The best way to get your CD/CI Pipeline setup without costly overhead"

September 6, 2018

5.0

VSTS DevOps allowed our team to manage our own DevOps and learn more about DevOps without needing to hire and be mentored by DevOps professionals.

Pros

VSTS DevOps has allowed our team to automate the builds of almost all of our products scaling our release time down and boosting our reliability. We used to be manually deploying our assets which would often cause breaking changes and would spend a day trying to revert the issues but since moving to VSTS DevOps we've been able to roll back versions instantly anytime there are problems but most of the time there aren't issues since VSTS DevOps sends your packages through a build cycle that checks compiler errors.

Cons

Some of the terminology is a little confusing and sometimes it can be hard to find your way around but well worth it once you get your builds setup.

### "It has taken a while to get used to, but I like it much better than our old way of doing things."

December 19, 2018

5.0

I use VSTS Devops as an end user, and let me tell you, it was a big change from my old way of doing things. At my company, we used a combination of SURE and Unisys's Albert in order to keep track of our work. It took a while to get used to VSTS. Everything was in one place, set up for an agile framework, but when I finally got used to it, I loved it so much more.

Pros

Most of all, I like how easy it is to track my work and the work of everyone on the team. Coming from a waterfall development cycle to an agile one, it's a big adjustment, and VSTS DevOps helps make that process easier.

Cons

Okay, this might be indicitve of my product manager more than the software itself, but I'd like it if Acceptance Criteria and Steps to Recreate were required fields in any Bug/PBI (where applicable). It would lead to much better work.

Azure DevOps is a great product that is helpful in development, integration, collaboration, and tracking the process progress.

Pros

Services which are provided by Azure DevOps are pipelines, boards, repos, test plans, and artifacts. Each service provides its best for the user's needs.Azure boards in project tracking, Pipelines in automation, test plan to manage test cases, and a dashboard provides a complete overview of all projects.

Cons

The main drawback that I faced here is that it is difficult to integrate with other tools.Pipeline configuration is also quite difficult, and it might get slower sometimes.

Seemless integration with Azure Cloud - you will be able to manage cloud related services in your project easily. 3. Easy to generate Reports, Dashboards etc. Ex: Test Progress report / Pull Request Report / Automated Test Run report. 4. Very user friendly.
