"Used to be good...avoid now!"

**Overall:** I have been a customer of sumup for 10 years. In general, I was pretty happy with it. It was good value for money, with lots of good useful features. On the rare occasions there were issues, there were support numbers you could call, with knowledgeable people on the other end of the line. Not so anymore. Several times this year I have had machine and app issues to where I couldn't take payments via card. You can no longer call for help. You have to go to the AI chat first. It's okay for basic questions that are already answered in the faqs. But if you have an actual problem, which is the only reason I'd be there, expect taking 20 to 30 minutes to get the AI to recognise you need to speak to a human. Once you get to the human, wich takes anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes, expect it to take anywhere from 2 to 20 minutes per response. Generally the people know very little, and are reading from a prepared script. Often the people don't understand the problem, and give information that has nothing at all to do with the issue. If you are really lucky, what would be solved in a 5 minute phone call MIGHT be solved after several hours in the chat. If you can't get it solved there, you may have to wait several days for an email from their "technicians", who often also do not understand the issues. Which you then have to go back to via email to explain the problem until they understand it. There IS a phone number for customer support. Don't bother with it unless you want your head to explode. A useless AI answers, that can't understand spoken language very well. It then sends you a link to the chat with the people who already weren't able to help you. Then it hangs up on you. If you keep calling back, you MIGHT get lucky and eventually get through to the humans. It Generally takes 4 to 5 calls to get through. The two times I've lost my temper at the AI because it asked me to "explain in your own words what the problem is" then says it doesn't understand, and I cursed at it, I got someone to actually answer. One person was very good and very helpful and understanding. The other person knew nothing, didn't care, and was utterly useless. The last of customer support not only has cost me several thousand in lost transactions, but has caused me migraines and many hours of frustration and lack of productivity while trying to work and deal with the very slow chat or trying to get through on the phone. This has gone from being a good company with good customer service, to literally the worst customer service I've ever seen, with the exception of a company that had NO customer service. It is no longer value for money.

**Pros:** Inexpensive, has a useful app to where you don't often need the card reader. You can use it on the go as long as you have phone signal.

**Cons:** Literally the worst customer service I've ever dealt with. You have to argue with an AI to get to a human, and then the simplest of questions that could be soryed in a 5 minute phone call can take hours in the chat. And while there is a customer service phone number, its almost impossible to get through.

**Alternatives Considered:** [Square Point of Sale](https://www.capterra.com/p/275802/Square-Point-of-Sale/), [Stripe](https://www.capterra.com/p/123889/Stripe/) and [FareHarbor](https://www.capterra.com/p/135106/FareHarbor/)

**Reasons for Choosing SumUp:** The pricing and customer service were good. It had useful features we liked
