### "Great first card payment service for sole traders"

September 20, 2025

5.0

Pros

It was really easy to get started with Sumup, the first card reader I bought was the Sumup air, the battery lasts ages , as a first time card payment user it was asimple process

Cons

The Air had a really long battery life, by that i mean it would last at least a whole day. I now have the Solo, it's nice but the battery just lasts an hour or two so I wouldn't really take it with me for taking payments away from my workshop, I take the Air for that

### "Great tool for startups, fair pricing, easy to operate using mobile phone "

August 27, 2025

5.0

Overall simple and intuitive, saves a lot of time because it works super well on mobile phones. Mamy functions available so overall great tool for small business or business that needs to accept simple payments or bookings.

Pros

I think it’s a great tool, however when I was choosing one for me, it didn’t have option to not have any payment terminal. Now it has and I think it’s great tool, especially when most of the transaction you’re doing is using your mobile phone. Its simplicity and intuitiveness is a strong plus.

Cons

I wasn’t sure if it had enough options for when my business will grow but for the beginning I think it’s great. I couldn’t find any form of integration with Klarna or Clearpay unfortunately.

Alternatives considered

[Square Point of Sale](https://www.capterra.com/p/275802/Square-Point-of-Sale/)

Reason for choosing SumUp

I think both are great, I use both but I think Square has kore options worth considered when growing business but at the same time, when you are a small or starting business the simpler solution might actually be better. I decided to set up Square because of integration with Clearpay

### "Used to be good...avoid now!"

July 23, 2025

2.0

I have been a customer of sumup for 10 years. In general, I was pretty happy with it. It was good value for money, with lots of good useful features. On the rare occasions there were issues, there were support numbers you could call, with knowledgeable people on the other end of the line. Not so anymore. Several times this year I have had machine and app issues to where I couldn't take payments via card. You can no longer call for help. You have to go to the AI chat first. It's okay for basic questions that are already answered in the faqs. But if you have an actual problem, which is the only reason I'd be there, expect taking 20 to 30 minutes to get the AI to recognise you need to speak to a human. Once you get to the human, wich takes anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes, expect it to take anywhere from 2 to 20 minutes per response. Generally the people know very little, and are reading from a prepared script. Often the people don't understand the problem, and give information that has nothing at all to do with the issue. If you are really lucky, what would be solved in a 5 minute phone call MIGHT be solved after several hours in the chat. If you can't get it solved there, you may have to wait several days for an email from their "technicians", who often also do not understand the issues. Which you then have to go back to via email to explain the problem until they understand it. There IS a phone number for customer support. Don't bother with it unless you want your head to explode. A useless AI answers, that can't understand spoken language very well. It then sends you a link to the chat with the people who already weren't able to help you. Then it hangs up on you. If you keep calling back, you MIGHT get lucky and eventually get through to the humans. It Generally takes 4 to 5 calls to get through. The two times I've lost my temper at the AI because it asked me to "explain in your own words what the problem is" then says it doesn't understand, and I cursed at it, I got someone to actually answer. One person was very good and very helpful and understanding. The other person knew nothing, didn't care, and was utterly useless. The last of customer support not only has cost me several thousand in lost transactions, but has caused me migraines and many hours of frustration and lack of productivity while trying to work and deal with the very slow chat or trying to get through on the phone. This has gone from being a good company with good customer service, to literally the worst customer service I've ever seen, with the exception of a company that had NO customer service. It is no longer value for money.

Pros

Inexpensive, has a useful app to where you don't often need the card reader. You can use it on the go as long as you have phone signal.

Cons

Literally the worst customer service I've ever dealt with. You have to argue with an AI to get to a human, and then the simplest of questions that could be soryed in a 5 minute phone call can take hours in the chat. And while there is a customer service phone number, its almost impossible to get through.

It has been a very good experience. Cheap options to buy equipment and also easy to contact

### "No Complaints, an effective product and service."

November 11, 2024

5.0

I've used SumUp in multiple businesses and often as a consumer. As a product and service, it's very fairly priced and makes card payment accessible to every business. I have no negatives, it is quick and easy to set up and tracking data and making notes on payments is simple.

Pros

It's simple to set up, simple to use, and the fees are very fair.

Cons

Initially when first using the product, it was challenging to set up phones with the card reader, but later updates have made this much simpler.

### "Avoid. Much better options available"

September 17, 2025

1.0

For the few first weeks I didn't have any issues. Then the system consistently would not work, causing lots of issues with my business including loss of income.

Pros

The physical POS till system appears smart, unfortunately this is only surface level. The logo is simple and inoffensive.

Cons

The system frequently drops and sales lost due to downtime. Customer service is awful. No way out of 12 month subscription, even when Sumup isn't upholding their side of the contract

### "Beware of SumUp Bank – Unjustified Account Freezing and Disgusting Customer Service"

March 29, 2025

1.0

I am beyond frustrated with SumUp Bank. They froze my business account without any explanation or warning. Since then, I’ve received zero clarity about why this happened, despite numerous attempts to contact them. They simply told me to “be patient and wait” while me and my business suffers. This is not just happening to me. It’s clear that SumUp Bank has done this to hundreds of other people, based on my research and reports I’ve seen online. They freeze accounts without warning, offer no explanation, and leave people struggling without access to their own money. This behavior is disgusting and disgraceful. I am unable to pay suppliers, buy materials, or run my business. The harm done to my reputation and the financial loss is devastating, and SumUp Bank’s refusal to provide any assistance is appalling. They are a completely unreliable and untrustworthy company. If you’re a business owner, stay far away from SumUp Bank. They clearly do not care about their customers, and they are unfit to handle your finances. Do not trust them with your money.

Pros

The use of payment links was helpful until the froze my account

Cons

The lack of customer service is awful and non existent

### "Worst support of my life."

March 21, 2025

1.0

Having worked in IT I have experienced some terrible support but SumUp really wins hands down. After signing up over a month ago with the paid plan, we are still waiting for things to be started and we are unable to use the system we were promised by pre-support. There is NO phone sales even though we were told we could take them and their website states different. No support response now in over 10 days. Ridiculous. If you are a small business, please don't choose SumUp.

Pros

Everything they promised but could not deliver.

Cons

The support and the lies. Waiting times, everything!

Pros

### "WHY DID I BOTHER"

March 8, 2025

1.0

frustrating, upsetting for my staff and customers and becoming increasingly costly to my business. After many virtual chats with artificial intelligence you will receive a human written email telling you to turn it off and on again. the returns policy is 30 days but you'll be lucky if you get anywhere with support by then. DO NOT BUY!!!

Pros

nothing, DO NOT BUY!!! (had to give one star as it won't let me leave a no star review)

Cons

its vast failings and constant glitches, receipt's fail to print, the till draw fails to open, the card reader stops responding. the support is less than very poor at best! DO NOT BUY POS Lite, Star M-pop, and solo card reader as they don't work reliably together.

### "Revolutionised our business pretty much"

November 3, 2022

Very happy - this is a very versatile and powerful product.

Pros

The slick integration between EPOS and card payments, stock control, goodeats and reporting. The customisation options and intuitive interface are a lot slicker than other systems we've used.

Cons

We've found that some of the custom payment and cheque options including custom service charge amounts is slightly clunkier than other systems we've used.

Pros

This software is awesome. My customers love being able to tap their cards in order to make payments. The tap and go feature is extremely convenient when I am at craft fairs or outdoor vending events. No more keeping money in a pouch.

Cons

Sometimes the payments go through an additional layer of verification, which is understandable but can sometimes be a strain on a small business.

### "Very good basic system, ideal for a young progressive company. "

September 3, 2024

5.0

Very good initially but decreased when opting for further products and software.

Pros

Ease of use, stable and the added bonus of a sim installed for external use.

Cons

We opted for the basic card reader and charger which functioned excellently during our early days at our busy little cafe. When attempting to opt for a POS system, we found a little resistance and limited customer service.

### "Good all round payment system, highly recommended"

January 13, 2023

5.0

Very good and easy use for first time users.

Pros

Good all round payment system, highly recommend for small/first time business owners. Also larger business owners too. Charges are inexpensive and the system is small, compact, easy to use and the battery is good and lasts me about 3 days before needing a recharge.

Cons

Not really many cons to look at unless you are paying for both this system and a booking system which also takes payment.... Then it's double charges. Other than this all good.

Reason for choosing SumUp

Because people prefer to pay themselves than have a system take their pre-saved card payments automatically

### "Love this App"

November 9, 2022

My overall experience with FiveStar is great. I love this app. Don't need to carry a lot of cards around.

Pros

It is user friendly. You just go shopping, give them your phone number and you receive points. Then you use the points to get rewards. How simple is that.

Cons

Only certain vendors participate in the program. There are expiration dates on some rewards.

December 2, 2022

Pros

I love that it's very easy to use at the register, and you can see how many points you have earned from previous purchases. Also, very easy to implement your rewards.

Cons

Wish every five star company/business that a user shops with could be listed on the main page. That way, One could see the points or incentives towards their next purchase. That would in tern- give them more reason to come shop at the business.

### "Not as strong as other options currently on the market"

July 29, 2019

3.0

Its a large buy in and not great customer service once you have signed up. It was all about the sale then hard to get any support. overall harder for small businesses than many other options out there.

Pros

The idea of this software is great. An easy effective way to start a a rewards program for your clients.

Cons

They sell you on their network. X amount of vendors and members in your area also use this software so they will market your business to these users and expand your reach offering deals to people that would be new clients to you. What the sales people forget to mention is that you will not be a part of this feature unless you sign up X amount of new users per week. Problem for my business is we have a large repeat clientele so hitting this large number to receive expanded marketing was not viable.

### "Loyalty Program"

October 25, 2016

1.0

I signed up with 5 stars to help with repeat traffic in my resale store. It started out pretty good until we needed to make changes to customers accounts. Phone numbers could not be changed by us. Customers were frustrated because some people do change numbers. They ask me to give them name and numbers to be changed and they would do it on their end. Once i gave them the numbers they said it was too many to change. The system would go down or Freeze on several occasions and every time they would call it was hard to get through and when we did they said the would look in to it and call us back. Most of the time they would never call back. We would type in a customers phone number and someone else name would come up. Causing confusion. I have customers complain including my self (business owner) that could not receive emails or text messages. They said they would look in to it. I ended up giving them another email because they didn't know why. It began to get hard for my employees to call for support because they would be on the phone a very long time for Fivestars to say the cant fix our problem but will look in to it and call back. They would not call back and we would have to start over calling. This was suppose to help my business, but when customers can not receive the emails, text or change phone numbers, they get mad. After 2 years of trying to make this work with them i told them i wanted to cancel my service. They ask why i told them to look at my file and see all the problems i have had that they couldn't fix. He looked and said yes he understood. A few days later i got a call from Fivestars saying they think they have fixed most of my problems and they would drop my monthly fee by about $75. At this point i told them i do not trust them and wouldn't use them if it was FREE.

### "Five Star Loyalty Rewards Perks"

June 29, 2022

5.0

Pros

Just the fact that there's programs out there that keep having a customer come back to stack up points from purchases. That in later life they could come back and trade in those points and make me feel like a value customer.

Cons

### "Pretty Standard, Nothing to Sneeze at."

July 17, 2019

4.0

Fivestar picks pretty good companies, or vise versa. That gives me the impression there is a good level of trust there, and Vendors that I speak to about it out of curiosity. This is encouraging when giving this sort of feedback. As a consumer/customer, I find it pretty easy to use and easy to navigate!

Pros

This is a pretty neat idea to have as an extra little something when you visit a favorite business of yours or to try something new. I have personally noticed that some “perks” are offered by the business pretty casually, but nice to have them all in one place. I will say that it is a neat and accurate feature to try out what is in the area. Not ideal too much if you don’t live in an area should you never have a chance to use it continuously, but great for local places.

Cons

This app works rather accurately with what it claims, so no real complaints. I cannot wait to see more places that will jump on and use it.

### "Versatile application"

December 8, 2022

5.0

A very nice experience that distinguishes it from reality, which makes its use easy and not boring. Rather, it is fun and useful, so I strongly recommend exploring it.

Pros

Fivestars gave me the ability to communicate and interact with my clients, as well as the ability to communicate with their parents, and I can also send and motivate my clients through gifts and discount coupons, which made the work more realistic and serious without imposing large costs. Fivestars has been very important to my business development.

Cons

There were no problems, he met all my needs and the needs of my clients, and he is always in continuous development.
