Having an objective grammar/cliche/structure checking tool like this is (IMHO) an essential part of the writing process before hiring a human editor. Pros \- The 'Style', 'Overused', 'Sticky' and 'Cliche' checkers are highly helpful - The interface is simple, although not perfect - Allows you to check things individually, or all together by using the 'Real Time' mode - One time purchase license (Lifetime) is a great option to have Cons \- No dark mode offered on Mac (as of 12/2018) - Still doesn't catch some things that Grammarly does (and visa-versa) - Pricey for what it does, even at the Lifetime purchase level. I think the value should be a bit closer to the $100 mark - Sometimes suggests changes that are unnecessary, or miss marks grammar as incorrect when it is, in fact, correct. However, I would say that if you are a professional blogger or freelance writer, ProWritingAid is definitely for you. It gives you an in-depth review of your writing in all aspect. Definitely worth every buck. Cons I would say that this software is not for everyone. If you are on your feet and need something out pretty quickly, this might not be for you. I will use it sometimes to help me proofread letters for my employer, but I've also found it to be useful for everyday tasks, such as browsing the internet, or composing messages on a forum or similar platform (social media, etc.). Pros The most notable feature that I've seen when using this browser extension is grammar checker, which goes far beyond anything I've seen from Grammarly or similar services. ProWritingAid actually underlines the portion of the sentence that is problematic, and notifies you if the sentence structure is flawed, or even less fluid or engaging than it potentially could be. It will tell you if your sentence is in active or passive voice, and recommend how to fix it. Cons Sometimes the suggestions given for fixing a possible error sound unnatural or mashed together. November 20, 2019 5.0 It helped me a great deal to improve my style. I initially used Grammarly and just of curiosity, I tried ProWritingAid -- only to learn that software can go beyond grammar and spelling. I feel like I grew as a writer by using ProWritingAid. However, it is a bit of pricey and perhaps some different grades/options can be introduced to satisfy variety of users. Pros ProWritingAid contains a number of features that will not only instantly correct and suggest alternative wording but that will gradually improve your overall writing skills. Unlike the popular competition, ProwritingAid has a more comprehensively take on writing, it goes beyond just correcting grammar and spelling but help you enhance your style as well. It provides a number of reports that can help you track the improvement of your writing skills. And of top of that, it works in Google Docs -- where all of my writing takes place. :) Cons It would be nice to have extensions for a variety of browsers, including Safari. I absolutely work with human editors for big projects like books, but on the day-to-day content and short fiction where I'm on a tighter turn-around and production budget, ProWritingAid is a cost-effective and efficient way to clean up mistakes and add polish. As an editor/proofreader myself, I also use it to add value for my clients—ProWritingAid helps flag more potential corrections than I can catch in a single pass while freeing me up to keep a closer eye on the style and logic side of things. Pros My favourite feature is the overused words check. It's really useful to have grammatical errors and typos flagged as well, but one of the hardest things for me to catch when self-editing is too many uses of the same words in proximity. The automatic check helps me clean up content and get it out the door quickly, whether it's my own projects or as an editor. Cons I have older MS Word software, so it's not compatible and copying to and from the web editor can be a little clunky. Pros It's quite easy to use. I like the function of uploading a big document and converting it back after editing, however, there is a limit to it, even though I could upload significantly more document than competitor. Cons Sometimes it misses glaring grammar mistakes, and many times it makes suggestions to make a sentence 'more readable', but in reality, the suggestion changes the essence of the sentence, it also dumbs it down a lot but suggesting a simplified version without knowing the content, which is a very telling limitation of AI algorithm. Somehow I would always discover a tiny omission or typo just after I hit send or submitted a hard copy. Pros It's useful and relevant. The browser extensions have proved extremely handy. Once logged in. I can work on the fly in any web writing space without having to write in the main app or MS word, copy and paste. The Firefox extension is making corrections as I write this review right now. Cons Really can't think of any right now. Maybe the fact that occasionally it misses an error that Google Docs picks up instead. But those are rare. Reason for choosing ProWritingAid At the time the onetime purchase option it offered was the main dealmaker. I love it, when it teaches you about the grammar and push you to think differently. Cons I notice that my Gmail email composing was slow because of the extension, so unfortunately, I have to turned it off.
