### "Love it, bought it for life"

February 7, 2025

5.0

I tried out Grammarly along side ProWritingAid and found it better meets my needs. Of course, both have developed significantly since then. PWA feels more grounded and gave me better suggestions than the competition. I bought a lifetime subscription. I have it turned on, on most webpages and in Outlook, Word and PowerPoint. It supplements the MS editor well. When I have needed help, the support team have always been great.

Pros

I like that it integrates with my favourite apps and is available whenever I am typing.

Cons

It is brilliant for novelists and other fiction writers. I would love some of their functionality focused on business and non-fiction writing.

### "The Write of Passages"

September 3, 2025

5.0

One of the best tools I use, if not daily, cetainly weekly. I've enjoyed using it from day one and will carryyon using it.

Pros

Prowritingaid is not just a plain writing tool, I've used a few of them and wasted a small fortune. No, its also great for checking readability, pointing out cluncky sentences, over used words, bad sentence structure, checking for plagiarism and so much more. All of which go to help the writing and learning experience.

Cons

The thing I least like regarding Prowritingaidis, it appears to require a reasonable large piece of text to check. Small stretches are generally ignored unless you join them to a larger paragraph. Also, the filing sytem I find it awkward at times, it's not as immediate as might be to locate a previously filed document.

### "Helps in writing development "

December 15, 2022

Nice causes discontinuity in my writing. Often changes meaning and disrupts the meaning but helps more than it causes issues.

Pros

I like the capability but my internet causes issues as it is unreliable hope to get upgraded soon.

Cons

Requires use of the internet. Should be more robust in the options I purchased from Oxford as it kept bringing up the mac dict which is useless and it does not bring up them anymore which is actually a plus. When it brought up a dictionary, it changed my stories. Causing issues.

### "Features are needed - so Pro don't go outdated."

March 30, 2025

5.0

it helped me alot with alot of my task during my studies and it is still doing so during my normal daily task,

Pros

New features like paraphrasing and correcting, and repetition.

Cons

Switching authors in the web settings reveals a range of writing styles, making it difficult to recognise each writer's unique style without a reference. ProWritingAid tends to lag behind in reflecting market changes. Due to the prevalence of AI in our time, much of what is happening involves AI creation. nevertheless - AI Detection. where ProWritingAid falls is its algorithms is being flagged by those wannabes sites - starving to sell for uncreative AI users. What I wish for Pro is it has a humanizer .. Sparks are nice .. Yet, if someone is creative enough... not needed

Good! I bought the lifetime Premium Pro version, and I have no regrets!

Pros

Ease of use and help with my editing and writing. I love the writers summits you guys put on too!

Cons

I would love to see an add on for Scrivener like you have for Word.

I still use Grammarly because they have a phone app. If PWA gets a phone app, I might delete Grammarly. I had an issue with Grammarly not loading up all suggestions years ago and that is how I found PWA. Grammarly's techs could not fix the issue but after about 6 months it cleared up on its own. I also use the plagiarism in Grammarly because it is free.

I've been using ProWritingAid for years. It has helped me improve the quality of my writing significantly. I've tried quite a few, and this is undoubtedly one of the best.

Pros

The rewrite option, grammar, and spelling suggestion corrections, and style suggestions. The summary/report of an entire document is awesome, too.

Cons

It's a great tool, but I can't afford the premium version. However, I appreciate the free version very much.

### "The Standard for Authors"

November 16, 2024

5.0

Wonderful. Took a small amount of time to get used to it after years on Word. But once acclimated, and it wasn't a hard learning curve, it has become by far my favorite. I recommend it to all my friends who write, sometime with the fervor of an evangelist.

Pros

I'm a pantser, trying to be more organized and become a little more of a planner. PWA makes that simple, and made my writing more impactful.

Cons

I wish there was an option to move from Premium Lifetime to Pro Premium Lifetime, through payments instead of only a lump sum. I would immediately upgrade if that was an option.

I am still new to use it but I use Atticus and it has been good so far.

Pros

I love that it picks up the simplest things that I wouldn't have caught.

Cons

I wish the box could be made smaller or even the ability to move it to my other screen, it covers some of the text that it is suggesting that I change - I can't see the full sentence and have to move it side to side to see it all.

### "One of the best investments for a writer"

September 1, 2024

5.0

Extremely positive. It's been a major help with my career over the years, as I started out as a freelance writer. To this day, I promote a writing culture at my company and writing is part of my everyday responsibilities. It's not a flawless experience, but it's reasonably close to being one.

Pros

One of the best ways to improve your writing is to just do it. But doing it blindly won't make you spot mistakes. ProWritingAid helped me do just that. It's one of the main things that improved my writing for the Web skills. I've been using it since 2018 and I'm using it to this day, even though my usage is getting more and more limited. My main goal when starting to use it was to simplify my writing style and make it more understandable for people, without sacrificing the quality of my content. With a few (out of LOADS) of reports, ProWritingAid helped me do that, and more. I use the Readability, Style, and Grammar reports. for everything I write, and then other reports depending on the situation and needs. I love that ProWritingAid has a lifetime plan and it's a tool well worth the money.

Cons

The Web app has bugs here and there, but most of them get patched quickly. The uptime is high, probably 99.99%, but there have been a few instances when the site was down when I wanted to use it. It's not a deal-breaker, but it's also noticeable enough. And finally, the Chrome extension is rather unreliable and limited. I don't take it as a major flaw because it's just an extra feature on top of the Web app - but if it exists, it should work well. And it doesn't.

Alternatives considered

Reason for choosing ProWritingAid

It offers more at a cost of some simplicity and the browser extension issues. I also preferred paying a one-time license rather than subscribing to Grammarly.

### "Best integrations"

May 16, 2024

5.0

I used Grammarly for 10 years but recently they keep threatening to discontinue support of integrations. Thier Microsoft Office Integration was official discontinued over a year ago although it is still available and functional but not promoted. Grammarly integrations are not that great and their where no improvements, things just got worse. The integrations in ProWritingAid all work and are easy to install.

Pros

ProWritingAid has the best integrations into Microsoft Office Suite, Windows Applications, and Web Browsers. Its standalone editor although based on Chrome, is very function and works well and imports a wide range of file formats. Rephrase sentence is a key functionality of ProWritingAid. If it determines something is not correct in your sentence, it will offer two alternatives. Often it will combine sentences when that makes sense to do so. It is quite uncanny how it can understand the meaning in your sentence and say the same thing in less words. Sometimes it gets the meaning of the sentence all wrong but I have learned ProWritingAid can't understand my grammar, neither will my readers and I best start again.

Cons

ProWriting Aid works differently than other products, such as Grammarly. Corrections in Grammarly are series of changes to each sentence till is "right" it is interactive, and each correction takes several edits. ProWritingAid offers to rephrase your sentences. The approach is different, and it takes some getting use too, but now that I've been using ProWritingAid for a while I prefer its approach.

### "ProWritingAid is ideal for Professionals and Students alike"

July 19, 2019

5.0

Not a bad thing to say about ProWritingAid thus far. It's inexpensive, and has helped tune my writing style so I'm faster and more confident about it. With all the tweaking options available (and plug-ability), you're almost never without it. That said, Grammarly has its purpose, and I'd perhaps consider keeping free Grammarly around for its browser-based tool. While I'd advocate using both, if only choosing one I'd opt for ProWritingAid.

Pros

I love how ProWritingAid plugs into MS Word and Scrivener, so both authors and other professionals can utilize the power of this service. The price is very affordable, and the features aren't matched by any competitors to my knowledge. It's great to also 'tune' PWA to your writing style, so it doesn't offer irrelevant suggestions. Another cool feature is Plagiarism checks, so if you hire blog content writers, you can check to see if their content is unique. The same is useful for students who want to check their work against internet sources.

Cons

While ProWritingAid is great, for some platforms that requires short snippets of content like e-commerce product pages, you may be better off with Grammarly. This is because PWA has more of a 'style' focus rather than 'grammar' focus. Perhaps the ultimate approach is to start with PWA to get your writing style mastered offline, then use Grammarly for browser-based usage when writing emails and short snippets of online content (to not get style suggestions where its superfluous).

Alternatives considered

[Grammarly Business](https://www.capterra.com/p/170306/Grammarly-Business/)

Reason for choosing ProWritingAid

I liked the granular control with PWA over Grammarly. Also less concerned with potential privacy issues using PWA.

### "Should have got this sooner"

August 20, 2024

5.0

It's intuitive, easy to use and motivates the corrections, and lets you choose at the end. I also like the style guide and that you can choose what kind of writing you are doing so it gets looked at accordingly.

Pros

It helps you become a better writer. You decide in the end, but it makes you think about possible errors. It helps me correct those before I send my manuscript to a professional editor. That helps me save money. I love it! Also, the critiquing is great. I can do one a day on my plan and I love waiting until I am happy about my work and then enter it for a critique, as this gives my confidence quite a boost as well as point out weak areas, if any :)

Cons

Let me think... No, I can honestly not think of anything other than I wished I got it sooner.

### "Best program for editing"

June 8, 2021

5.0

Not only does this do a great job of highlighting a large variety of issues, there are also explanations and consistent usage has helped authors learn better writing habits in their future manuscripts. This company also has excellent customer service and continues to improve and add to the software. They also have an option for an extremely affordable lifetime purchase. By far better than other popular programs.

Pros

The sheer number of options and variety of checkers in this program are incomparable. Absolutely the best program to use to prepare your writing. Two of my favorite features are the repeats and echoes. It does an excellent job of identifying repetitive phrases and words, and the same words used too closely together. It's harder for a human editor to pick up on that as consistently as a computer and in this specific area, I feel it does a better job than a person. Obviously no program can replace a human, but this one does a fabulous job of trying.

Cons

I really have a hard time thinking of something bad to say about this software. I think there can be some improvements made in style choices and the thesaurus, but they aren't bad. I just feel like maybe they can be upgraded slightly.

### "I use ProWriting Aid daily to keep my editing polished and professional"

July 28, 2022

5.0

My overall experience with ProWritingAid is excellent! It has made a definite difference in both my personal writing and my business as an editor. So much so, that I purchased the lifetime subscription. Thank you.

Pros

I find this one of the best tools for my own writing, as an author, and editing the writing of others. What I like most is that I can run reports on all aspects or specific aspects of the writing. It's like having an editorial analysis at my fingertips without having to input everything myself. This is invaluable to me.

Cons

What I like least is that there is a difference in American and British spellings in many circumstances. These present as errors, and can be bothersome to repeatedly encounter. It would be nice to be able to select the American version or the British version of the software to avoid this issue.

Reason for choosing ProWritingAid

as stated above.

### "Useful software with much room for improvement"

March 3, 2023

4.0

I don't regret the purchase but I am not sure there is enough of a ROI compared to standard grammar and spell checks. I mainly purchased it for stylistic advice but that aspect still leaves a lot to be desired. In the age of AI one would expect more intelligent suggestions analysis of similar documents, specific conventions within that style of writing.

Pros

Integrated well into Word for Mac and hasn't crashed on me so far. Compared to the market leader I managed to get this license at a more attractive price. The support does respond to queries and there seems to be an effort to bring users together in a writing community.

Cons

The UX can be quite confusing. The scores seem to be very arbitrary and differ between the quick editor and the full editor. You can select the type of document you are writing like "academic essay" but the stylistic suggestions are not adjusted for that. References are flagged as spelling errors. Passive voice constructions are always flagged as undesirable. Sometimes the tool recommends changing a phrase/word to a more formal expression only to afterwards recommend changing it to a less formal expression.

### "A mixed bag"

August 18, 2019

4.0

Overall, it's been a useful tool which has helped me improve my writing style. I try to find amusement in its bizarre, triggered reactions to individual words without considering context. For now, I'll continue to use it, but I can foresee a time when I feel I don't need it anymore - unless the improvements I've mentioned above get addressed.

Pros

It's a Microsoft Word plug-in, making it readily available whenever I'm working. The report descriptions are clear and concise, and the results are often helpful. The most useful reports are the Sticky Sentence Check (which helps me minimise fluffy writing), the Overused Words Check (which picks up the most common instances), and the Pronoun check (which helps me avoid excessive pronoun usage). Other reports (the Sentence Length and Dialogue Tags checks) offer useful information too, but they satisfy my interest in document statistics.

Cons

Three things stand out. 1. The Grammar Check for the Word plug-in doesn't have a user-custom dictionary. (Grammarly and Word both provide this feature.) Since I'm writing fantasy, the Grammar Check throws out an irritating stream of unrecognised words - which I've trained Grammarly and Word to accept. 2. The Grammar Check and Writing Style Check have a limited view of context, which often leads to me rejecting every suggestion. For example, it recently flagged "like", suggesting that I consider a stronger verb: examination of the surrounding words would have shown that it wasn't a verbal usage. Some tautology suggestions seem bizarre: it flags "cool" and "smooth", but these are only synonymous in a very limited language community; and it flags "heavy" and "wet" as synonymous, for some unfathomable reason. 3. There are settings to restrict certain checks within dialogue. I'd like to prevent checks for "emotion tells" in dialogue: people often say "I'm delighted to meet you", or "I'm afraid you're wrong." Such utterances shouldn't be flagged.

### "Good Solid Produce"

November 3, 2023

5.0

Pros

"I've been using ProWritingAid for quite some time, and as a person with profound dyslexia, it played a crucial role not only in helping me get through my degree and my MA but was also paramount during my PhD. One of the main selling points for me was the one-time payment option, although I'm not sure if they still offer it.The tool corrected all my spelling errors and helped me reconstruct sentences. Over time, I've noticed that this product has improved significantly. I especially appreciate the dedicated app for my Apple Mac, and its seamless integration with Word and other office programs."

Cons

While using ProWritingAid extensively, I've come across a few drawbacks. First, on the Apple platform, it's relatively easy to work around most issues, but the tool may not integrate seamlessly with Microsoft Word as you might expect. However, the dedicated app provides a wealth of information and is quite useful for more in-depth analysis. It's important to note that ProWritingAid may not be as fully functional as a dedicated AI writing program, but it's essential to understand that this tool was never intended for rewriting or completely generating crucial documents."

Reason for choosing ProWritingAid

That being you are using for a long time and used it extensively at the time you had a lifelong license and a special offer on it but I took and never regretted it as I don't like a regular payment.
