Codenaut Information Technology and Services Used the software for: 1-2 years ### "Bubble is almost allmighty, just needs a more complex conditional logic for workflows :)" September 12, 2021 4.0 We are creating a web app for libraries, for managing and access recourses. Part of this involves transferring or communicating (with API) information from our current internal business application (based on Filemaker). We were trying even to replace part (if not all) of this internal app into Bubble, because of all the powerful things previously mentioned, but the lack of complex logic/expressions also mentioned, forces us to resign for now and keep developing both application environments (communicated via API) and duplicating data, which makes it much more difficult and inefficient than a single environment. Pros 1) Design flexibility: the freedom of working with a blank space, which requires probably more time investment and craft building in both design and workflows, but allows a lot of flexibility and almost limitless possibilities. 2) Data relationship: the logic of the database, where instead of relations between tables, it works with fields as objects to access records in other tables. In the beginning, was hard to get used but once I got it, it is just a superpowerful logic. 3) Privacy/access settings: the privacy rules, workflows and hiding properties which combined allows making parts of the app and database public or private for specific users, and therefore for public webs, internal apps, customers apps. Cons It’s major achilles heel for me is the expression system, both for allowing more complex logic and better expression editor (right now is a mess editing an existing dynamic expression). Implement a good condicional logic (case, if) along with internal expression variables (let) would allow making almost anything. This is really a huge thing, it is difficult to describe how this impacts or may impact an app, the complex logic and expressions (complex conditional expressions, better editing, variables) is the 50% of a complex real application. Improving this, would make Bubble a fantasy, a total killer solution. Few years ago we started looking for alternative for web app (Filemaker is very limited on that), then we discover Bubble and Wappler. We tried Wappler as we prefer an app that builds free/open code, to no depend on the platform in long term, but find it Wappler very difficult to start, much more focused for programmers. We tried Buildr a few weeks ago, but the workplace seems also too big to even catch and understand. As we were discovering the power of Bubble during these 2 years, we were thinking even to replace Filemaker (our business solution is built on it), but because the complex conditional logic and process we need, we found that part impossible to reach with Bubble for now. I love it. Everyday I learn new things. The support team is very efficient. This is very import when you develop on a daily basis. Things need to move fast and Bubble is really on point when it comes to helping you developping fast. Pros I am now able to create a website in no time. Everything is very fast. There are still some issues to work around but Bubble gets better everyday and I heard you guys got some good money for research so my hopes are high for the future :D What I like the most? speed and reusable elements :D Cons versioning!! Development and Live are fine. When you start dealing with more than that, this is still unclear if data is merged correctly. So many errors... if the SQL connector could allow us to put a dynamic value for our database connection string that would be awesome. It was impressive what we could do with the system. In fact we chose to develop the system we wanted vs. buying into a fully-pre-built sass application that would have cost us lots more per month. I think it has been a good investment. Pros In a few months we were able to design and implement a freelancer marketplace with user management, signups, password management, workflows etc. We had no prior experience of the product and yet it was easy to grasp the concepts and start building things in a matter of minutes. The process was made easier by virtue of an app marketplace where we could purchase a template that did some/or most of what we wanted. From there it was straightforward to customise it to be the way we wanted it. If we'd kept it the same we could probably have launched in a matter of days, but we wanted to make some changes to suit our needs. It was surprising to me just how versatile a development environment this is. Sometimes these no-code environments can restrict you by making you follow their model - but Bubble seems to have a lot of functionality without making it mind-bogglingly complicated. I suspect you can make almost any kind of website or web application you want with this tool. Cons The responsive page design is a bit hard to get your head around at first, and sometimes you get slightly erratic results. I believe they are making some improvements to this in a coming release, but it is useable even now. Using Bubble we are able to empower citizen developers to build custom applications both client facing and internal staff tools without requiring months and tens of thousands of dollars in development.The platform is also great for building high fidelity mock ups and prototypes. Pros We haven't hit a roadblock on features development in Bubble yet. Previously we would go through an ideation phase be limited by the functionality on previous no code/low code platforms. Bubble helped build Brounce, a marketplace idea I had and still runs on Bubble, along with other services I have integrated mainly through Zapier. I love the fact that I run everything without code and Bubble is right at the center of all the action. Pros Bubble helps you get started in record time all without writing any code. After a few lessons designed by Bubble. You can start building your project with drag and drop and really smart workflows in no time and deploy to early adopters and grow from there. Whatever your project needs, believe me, you can absolutely build in on Bubble. Bubble integratees with a multitude of their party services with plugins and with Zapier. Cons Bubble does not allow exporting the source code of your project! If this is super important to you, then Bubble might not be the best option to run your project long-term. You can export your data but not the source code. it's a bummer because down the line you might want to have better control of your app and you need access to the code, but you can't, and that's just it! Founder Insurance Used the software for: 1-2 years ### "Great tool, but it will frustrate you" August 12, 2021 4.0 I am building two prototypes or MVPs for insurance system applications using Bubble, and have run into a lot of obstacles trying to get past the Bubble limitations. The Bubble coaching ecosystem is tremendously helpful in surmounting these obstacles, and we have been able to get past most or all of them - but only after spending days beating our heads against the wall until someone is able to put us on the right path. But once you get past the roadblocks, it seems like there isn't much you can't find a way to do. Pros Bubble is very powerful, and its model for building apps is good. It doesn't take long to get the basics down. The user community is really strong and helpful. And the fact that regular humans can write plugins for it is important (see the "what don't I like about it" section). Cons Out of the box, Bubble has some significant limitations. And my problem with it is that there are user built workarounds for many or most of them, but there's no intuitive way to figure out which limitations are absolute, and which can be overcome using plugins or wacky workarounds. Like - you can only upload 200 rows of data at a time to Bubble - unless you happen to know about a plugin that allows you to do unlimited uploads, but only by jumping through hoops that you won't figure out yourself until someone shows you how to get past it. Or - you can't take data in one data type and create different data types from it. Well, actually you can, but you have to use a backend workflow to do it, which is not obvious. Once you see it it's easy, but until someone shows you, you wouldn't think to try the solution. At least I and my team didn't. Also - I really wish they would use more standard language in their naming conventions - Bubble "data types" should be "tables", Bubble "things" should be "rows" (or even "objects"). Pros Bubble allows you to deploy software quickly, whether you're just creating a prototype, showing off a demo, or providing a full end-to-end experience.Need to change or update something? Fix it, deploy it, and end users simply need to refresh their page. Need to test something out? There's clear separation of development and live versions, and you can copy data easily between the two if you need to.It's also really simple to make mobile- & tablet-friendly websites using Bubble's responsive layout, or you can make mobile versions of pages and set up the logic to direct to these very easily.Bubble also handles databases, helps you keep them secure, and presents them to you in a user-friendly way so they're easy for you to structure on setup and get what you need out of them, either by searching in Bubble's backend or presenting that data to the user.It's also easy to integrate other products from across the web, with an API connector if you want to do it yourself, or thousands of community-provided plugins if you want really simple solutions. Cons Like all software, Bubble has its quirks to get used to. Want to clear certain things in your app (like a field in a database)? Well, the delete icon doesn't always fully delete; you'll need to find the 'Optimise application' button deep in your settings and fully delete there.Bubble also thrives on its plugins for the best functionality. However, plugins are a mixed bag: Bubble doesn't do much quality checking, so some just don't do what you need them to. Plugin documentation is often thin on the ground, or totally non-existent, even for plugins Bubble publish themselves. Sometimes documentation for a plugin is a 1,000+ post thread on the Bubble Forum - imagine searching StackOverflow, but every problem about that language was in one enormous thread - which makes it really difficult to find a solution for your problem. Relying on plugins also means Bubble is reliant on its community continuing to maintain these plugins; I hope that with time Bubble is looking to build in some of the features of its most popular plugins to the core app to secure both its own business and the workings of the businesses that make Bubble apps!Bubble are great with support queries, but feeding back anything that isn't a bug can be difficult. They have an 'ideaboard', where users can upvote good ideas, but it's unclear what priority these ideas fall under, or if they're in scope at all. February 8, 2023 4.0 I'm actually really pleased I found Bubble which I did after hearing a throwaway comment made by someone giving a Ted talk. I was quoted horrible amounts of money to create my app and Bubble has enabled me to complete a prototype that I'm hoping to get into testing very soon and for very little cash. Bubble is surprisingly feature rich and I've been able to do some really advanced stuff (in my novice opinion). Pros Bubble is relatively straightforward to use once you've established the basics. It's very feature rich and there's a fantastic community to ask for help. Cons I found the initial steps confusing. Some of the language is simultaneously too simple and confusing (eg, "Thing" is ambiguous and concepts like "Data Source" and "Type of Data" need to be explained fully at the outset - I never found this). Luckily I understood relational databases but Bubble simplifies this concept to such and extent that it makes one worry that something's being missed. When getting into more complicated aspects of Bubble, it's the community that helps out via the Forum or YouTube. YouTubes are often far too long or simply incomprehensible and it can be hugely frustrating trying to arrive at a solution and often there is simply SO much information to read it's impossible. There has been almost nothing I could not do with Bubble, including some advanced processing algorithms that my competition has not attempted. I feel like I can make a full-scale web marketplace platform for a scale of 100,000s users all within Bubble. And, by using Bubble, I also save hundreds of thousands of dollars building solid infrastructure. And I believe the Bubble leadership is committed to growing the platform in the ways that matter; stability, security, developer features, to give tools to nocode developers to deliver fast, clean, and delightful, end-user experiences. Pros Bubble gives me ALL the most important pieces of the puzzle to create a viable software system. I like the way Bubble creates pages, preview, and deploy them to a live public-facing web product fast. I like the built-in User system. I like the row-level security system. I like the way it manages a dev environment and production environment seamlessly and intelligently. I like the navigation between pages. I love the way objects in the database are defined, created, and linked to the application. I like the way pages can be laid out responsively using techniques similar to the best prototyping systems like Figma. It's almost as fast to create live working production pages as it is to design them in a prototyping tool. I like the way data elements are referenced on the page. I like the way information can be presented, edited by a user, and then stored. It gives you the power of the display and the power of the saving process. I like the rich and useful plugins. I like how almost every external service you will need is already available, and how EASY it is to connect to external APIs. I LOVE how the entire system -- EVERYWHERE -- automatically shows changes to data everywhere all at once. The technical description of this feature is that every element that shows data has a subscription to that database element automatically. Most of all, I like how searching and displaying information and pictures are handled. using fast and easy-to-understand techniques. Cons The dynamic data source entry boxes, where you can use "no code" thinking, access both simple ("grab the data from a data field or another component on the page" ) and complex ("merge the results of a database search with a list just entered by the user and stored in the page"). But, the entry box is small and too tightly "prompted". Just making it larger would be an improvement. I don't like how all options sets and plugin data are loaded with every page even when that page doesn't make use of it - I believe it affects page-loading performance. Reason for choosing Bubble At first, it was price tag. Then, it became obvious that Bubble is the superior platform. I have only dabbled in other platforms, but I cannot believe that anything other than Salesforce can compete ... and even then, the microscopic barrier needed to make Bubble successful compared to platforms like that is amazing. Cons What bubble makes up in speed of development it reduces the scalability of it. Bubble is 10X more expensive than any other software we use. Bubble allows for very speedy prototyping and development, and clients love this. It is especially useful being able to show live changes whilst in calls with little or no delay. Although this can work against me as some clients then believe everything is as easy and quick to do! Pros The community is very active, friendly and helpful. Training material is in good supply with some excellent tutors. Cons Performance and limitations on features within different pricing tiers can out-price it for some projects. It was very difficult in the first months because I am not a Cartesian mind. I'm more of a creator, a drawer, and a designer. I started by using Webflow which corresponded more to me. But as powerful as Webflow is, it was not going to allow me to reach my goal. That of creating powerful sites like Shopify for example. So I trained via different training platforms, for over a year. Today, with a lot of effort, I think I am able to create all my ideas without any problem with Bubble. Pros I've always been an entrepreneur and being able to create sites on my own, without the help of a developer is really a game changer. Cons It is very difficult for a non-technical person to understand all these new concepts. I had to train myself and it was long and difficult. Pros Plataforma No Code dá velocidade e praticidade para criar, modificar e incorporar novos recursos ao software. Plugins ajudam quando não há o recurso específico ou para facilitar a criação de um workflow. E por fim, as API's pois há possibilidade de integrar outros aplicativos criados em bubble ou de serviços de terceiros. Cons As mudanças de plano (billing) não são tão intuitivas assim. Por exemplo, eu tinha uma aplicação com o pagamento mensal de 29 dll. Para mudar para o plano anual, eu tive que fazer um downgrade e depois escolher o novo plano. No primeiro momento, fiquei com muito medo de dar errado em algum recurso que só funciona nos planos pagos, como por exemplo as API's, domínios e etc. Eu fiz o procedimento e deu tudo certo, mas essa função de billing poderia melhor muito. Pros I enjoy working in bubble.io simply because it is very easy to try out ideas and concepts. Cons It's probably because I need to learn more, but I find adapting to all sizes of devices is a bit a trial and error situation. For example, the responsive engine rendered nicely on my android phone, but did not display as nicely on an older iPhone. Again, I probably need more time to nail this one down. Your custom plan allow to select the region, but its quite expensive, so people work with another back end solution. I LOVE bubble and i invested a lot of time learning your solution so i want you to succeed as well. I would have needed to hire a developer for minimum $100K in order to achieve what I have on my own in only a few months. I love using Bubble and would recommend it highly to anyone looking to build a company as a non-technical founder. Pros Bubble has given me the ability to bring my very complex idea to life. I feel so empowered that I'm able to create whatever comes to mind and make quick changes as my strategy evolves. It didn't take long for me to figure out that Bubble is a lot more powerful than it seems, but I'm constantly realizing that the potential it unlocks is truly endless. The only limit is your willingness to grow and imagine. Cons I wish that Bubble had a built in way to manage user payments so I didn't have to rely on an external tool like Stripe. I also think there could be improvements to the visualization of data, logs, and more transparency into what went wrong with a backend workflow when there's an error. Happy customer. Pros I was initially really interested in the template options that Bubble has available. For me, it was always a lot better to build on an existing model than create something from scratch, even if the template didn’t really resemble my desired outcome in any way. Seeing a framework and how it was put together really helped me conceptualise a way to construct something approximating the kind of system I needed to build. I also really liked the native functionality and API options to extend the capabilities of systems I could build. Cons The system is at times very clunky and there are definitely things that could be improved, like the speed of the system (even with only a couple of users) and hidden elements appearing for a split second on page load before being hidden again but it’s all things you learn to work around. Also, although it’s supposedly “no-code” and “no prior experience necessary” and all that jazz, it definitely a software you have to study extensively to understand… I’ve been building on this for over a year and I’m still in the dark about 40% of it‘s functionality, it’s a little misleading to say it’s for novices. Also they could make a few common integrations a bit more accessible/complete. The collective time saved if they curated and refined their integrations a bit more would be much appreciated.
