### "A Breakthrough in Qualitative Data Coding: ATLAS.ti with AI Enhancement!"

August 9, 2023

5.0

ATLAS.ti is a game-changer in handling large-scale qualitative data. The integration of AI coding tools catapults the experience into the future, making data analysis not only easier but also more exciting. The support center, too, has been exceptional. Any question I had was met with swift and effective assistance through integrated chat. My experience with ATLAS.ti has been nothing short of thrilling!

Pros

ATLAS.ti takes coding and analysis to a new frontier with its AI coding capabilities. The way it automatically processes my data not only fascinates me but also enhances my workflow. The seamless integration of AI with traditional coding techniques allows me to compare and even blend human intuition with machine intelligence. With features like word clouds and opinion mining, it's exhilarating to see AI technology being applied so innovatively in qualitative coding!

Cons

The software already exceeds expectations! Thanks for providing us with these tools and allowing us to focus solely on what really matters - reflexivity!

[MAXQDA](https://www.capterra.com/p/174104/MAXQDA/)

MAXQDA has some limitations that have affected my personal experience with the software. First and foremost, the lack of 24-hour live chat support can be a significant inconvenience when immediate assistance is required. Moreover, the interface is not as intuitive as I would prefer, leading to a steeper learning curve and hindering efficiency. But what has been particularly problematic for me is the limited capacity to exchange between platforms, such as Mac, Web, and Windows. As someone who uses a Mac at the office and Windows at home, this cross-platform inconsistency has resulted in a frustrating experience with MAXQDA. The software doesn't seem to have the robust tools and flexibility that would alleviate these issues, making it a less-than-ideal choice for my specific needs.

### "Easy "

November 4, 2023

5.0

Pros

The ease of use (with no training), the smoothness of the interface and the extremely responsive and knowledgeable support team (responded within seconds at 8pm).

Cons

Finding highly specific functions was a little fiddly, (I had two transcripts connected to a single audio track and was unable to delete one until I had disconnected them - a highly specific senario which was easily solved with the very responsive technical support team!)

Switched from

[NVivo](https://www.capterra.com/p/171501/NVivo/)

Nvivo is dated and clunky with highly complex (and probably powerful) functions, although I've never used them because they are so complicated to learn and use. Nvivo is provided free by my university, but I would prefer to pay for Atlas ti as it is far more user friendly with a very shallow learning curve. The pricing structure also made it reasonable for me as a student to use for a single research project over one semester.

### "Mixed bag, needs a LOT of improvement"

March 10, 2026

3.0

A mixed bag with great disappointments. The coding feels great and I'm happy about related features, but the cloud, file management, backup, and user interface are horrible. So much potential missed out on essential things that are so standard for modern programmes.

Pros

I love that the codes are coloured automatically and show up as such when you go through the document, with the specific code being next to the segment that you have coded it with. I am also a fan of the concept map functionality and how you can just drag codes into it and connect them with each other, and that this creates an actual connection within the code structure, not just in the concept map itself.

Cons

Almost everything apart from the coding and concept map feature. I will start with the big issues: file management, the cloud feature, the user interface. File management: The way that you have to organise files is downright horrible and creates unnecessary additional work. There are no folders, so you have to put things together under Groups. If you import a document, it cannot be dragged into the group, but will just be imported without being assigned to anything. When you then want to look for that document, you have to go back to the documents, find it among all of the other ones you have, and then you can drag it into the group that it should be in. It would be so much easier if we just had folders for the documents or if you could drag a document you want to import into the group. Cloud feature: An absolute disaster. Though it is supposed to be a beta version, there is just no transparency on it. No idea where my files are, how to access this cloud (I believe you can't actually access it), and how much space you have left to upload. In addition, saving your project on a cloud service outside Atlas.ti is recommended against, which means that you have to live in constant uncertainty of whether your project stays up-to-date. Cannot really work on different computers, because you have to make sure it's uploaded and since it doesn't do that automatically, if you forget to save and manually upload again, you're screwed. There is no functionality to pull a project from the cloud, so all you can do is upload. User interface: There is just so little transparency about where to go for what you need. For example, if you go into your project, you have a settings button for application preferences, project preferences and Atlas.ti. But, this is not the right options button for when you want to know where this particular project is located. In order to find this, you have to close out of it and look for the settings in the overall project overview. Again, the decision to not put files into folders makes it much more difficult to find the documents you want. I don't really understand the decision to have an explore menu on the left. Much better to just have one consistent way to find your codes, files, etc.

Because the coding works better for me from a visual aspect. However, Nvivo is better in every other aspect.

### "It's All about Customer Service"

June 28, 2024

5.0

I have experience using several of the top-selling QDA platforms. One of the reasons I am loyal to ATLAS.ti is because its customer service is unsurpassed. It's easy to submit questions about licensing and functions, responses are prompt, and the human beings who send the responses are knowledgeable, reasonable, and kind. They make my life easier!

Pros

The user interface is intuitive; running queries is easy.

Cons

I've been resisting the subscription format, but it's the common business model these days so I understand. I've been using v.8 for nearly a decade and I'm hoping they've done away with the bundling/unbundling function for v.24!

Alternatives considered

[MAXQDA](https://www.capterra.com/p/174104/MAXQDA/)

Reason for choosing ATLAS.ti

I kept ATLAS.ti over the years, but sometimes my clients use another product software like NVivo or MAXQDA. MAXQDA intrigued me. When I was ready to finally move past version 8, I made inquiries to both ATLAS.ti and MAXQDA. In the end, it came down to customer service. I submitted the same question to both companies. You responded in a way that I knew you thoughtfully considered my circumstances. Making the jump from v.8 to v.24 has me nervous, but I know I won't have any problems if I need help.

Dear Shannon, thank you so much for your feedback! We are honored that you've counted on ATLAS.ti for so many years and even more that you've found our customer service to be unsurpassed. We've always been dedicated to offering the best possible qualitative research software, but over the years we've also realized how important it is to help researchers through every part of using the software. This is why we offer free expert support 24 hours a day, 5 days a week, via live chat, telephone, and email. We strive to make qualitative research easier for everyone, everywhere! Indeed ATLAS.ti has become much more streamlined and powerful since version 8, and now you can easily move projects across Windows, Mac, and Web. We ultimately had to transition to a subscription format to adapt to changing operating systems, security policies, and users' collaboration needs. Technology is always quickly changing, but our developers work hard to ensure everyone has the best tools at their fingertips!

### "Great Customer Support and easy to use product, but clunky for teams"

July 10, 2023

5.0

There is a learning curve to working with teams, but overall, this product is much better than some of the piecemeal products and strategies I've used for qualitative data analysis I've used in the past. I would've loved using this when I was working on my dissertation for example. I look forward to trying this tool for writing journal articles and book chapters in the future - a functionality I haven't utilized just yet but seems promising.

Pros

I love how easy it is to get going. Import files, put in groups, use the coding features to get tagging. I had usable codes to analyze quickly.

Cons

Working with a team has been so difficult. The user manual is not as clear as I'd like on how to share the work with a team of users. The customer support helped me figure it out, which was great! They were online and quickly and knowledgeably helped me. BUT, the functionality for teams is CLUNKY! Not easy to work together at all in my opinion.

Alternatives considered

[Mendeley](https://www.capterra.com/p/233913/Mendeley/)[NVivo](https://www.capterra.com/p/171501/NVivo/)

Reason for choosing ATLAS.ti

I had tried NVivo as a student and it was nearly impossible to work with. Mendeley didn't have quite the breadth of functionality as Atlas Ti, and while Wordsmith was intriguing, I looked at Atlas Ti first and found it had what I needed, so didn't do as much digging into Wordsmith.

I am a positivist and often used quantitative analysis. But when i started my PhD studies, i venture into behavioral sciences and realized that i had to put meaning to figures,,....and gues what...when i discovered ATLAS.ti and explored its use through youtube training, within days i gradually became an expert in using it. I most importantly liked the area od qualitative positivism that blends well with advanced data analytics that bring out the best meanings attached to various sentiments from subjective respondents. We love you guys and keep the fire burning!!

### "Atlas.ti forever"

May 15, 2024

5.0

Pros

Atlas.ti's ease of use is increbile. It took me literally half an hour to switch from another major CAQDAS to Atlas.ti. The user interface, cross-platform, the exceptional customer service, just everything is far better. There are differences in the methodological approach that have to be considered when switching to Atlas.ti. For example, the node hierarchy works differently. And so too does the classification of cases (persons, organizations) have its particularities in Atlas.ti. But none of the necessary adaptations represent a major issue in switching. Beyond that, Atlast.ti does a much better job in every other aspect of qualitative data analysis.

Cons

Case classifications Node hierarchy (impossibility to use parent nodes for coding)

Reason for choosing ATLAS.ti

I knew Atlas.ti existed, but did not notice its faster software development process. The "new" user interface is great!

Dear Patricio, thank you so much for your feedback! Our mission is to help make qualitative research easier for everyone, everywhere, which is why we have a dedicated team of experts here to help, 24 hours a day, 5 days a week, via live chat, telephone, and email. You're right that category codes (or parents codes as they're called in NVivo) cannot be directly applied to quotations, but whenever you drag-and-drop a category onto a quotation, it automatically gives you the option to select which sub-code of that category you want to attach. Later, you can easily explore quotations at the sub-code or code category level. And as you very well pointed out, you can indicate classification of cases (i.e., documents in ATLAS.ti) by creating document groups. Please count on our support, we wish you all the best in your research!

### "Pros and cons of using Atlas.ti."

March 13, 2024

5.0

I am very satisfied with Atlas.ti as it provides a lot of convenience in qualitative data analysis. Moreover, I got the user access for free from the university where I study. This truly helps in completing my coursework

Pros

The thing I like most about Atlas.ti is its AI coding capability. This feature greatly facilitates initial research analysis. Additionally, I highly appreciate the ease of coding and numbering quotations, as it simplifies the process of creating and tracing both direct and indirect quotes.

Cons

"What I dislike is that Atlas.ti frequently prompts for application updates. When I'm out of town with poor internet signal, this can be very inconvenient. Secondly, the use of AI coding features is limited by a certain number of tokens. So, I need to be careful and schedule the use of AI coding features to avoid getting my account suspended.

### "Great Choice for Qual Reaserach"

October 12, 2025

5.0

I'm satisfied! It's much better than the cumbersome Nvivo. Coding is really easy, and it offers lots of other features that I haven't used yet, but which don't clutter up the interface for simpler tasks. So I think it's a pretty solid and simpler tool, even though it offers many options for exploring data.

Pros

Atlas.TI is a robust application for qualitative research. I like how light and user-friendly the interface is. It's easy to learn how to use! Researchers can collaborate online (although there is still room for improvement in this area).

Cons

The transition from computer to cloud is not easy. There is a 500 MB limit for importing projects from the desktop version to the cloud version. However, you will only find this out after you try to do so. It is not particularly emphasized when you start working with the desktop version.

### "Atlas for the win!"

July 14, 2023

5.0

I am blown away by the AI Coding tool in ATLAS.ti. Even though ChatGPT has emerged so powerfully just a few months ago, ATLAS.ti is demonstrating one of the many useful applications of OpenAI’s algorithms by bringing this into qualitative data analysis. I was so excited when I saw this feature was released, and the results are really impressive!

Pros

AI Coding inductively analyzes text, creating many new codes and showing co-occurrences between codes. I also really like that the AI Coding creates categories and sub-codes, because the categories give a very good bird’s-eye understanding of the data, and then the specific sub-codes help to understand each category in more detail.

Cons

AI Coding can sometimes take long to analyze everything. I was surprised because the other AI tools in the software are really fast (like concept analysis), but AI Coding took 15 minutes to code my interviews. I hope the speed will continue to improve over time.

### "Great software for coding qualitative data, manually or with AI"

July 14, 2023

5.0

ATLAS.ti has made it much easier for me to analyze a lot of qualitative data, and the AI coding tools take things to another level. I’ve had a very good overall experience with ATLAS.ti, including the support center, whenever I had a question I got quick and effective help from the integrated chat.

Pros

I like all the coding and analysis features that facilitate various approaches. Now with AI Coding, I’m always interested in seeing how the software automatically codes my data. I also like to explore and compare the AI codes with my own coding, word clouds, and opinion mining. I’ve already been exploring ChatGPT, and I’m glad to see AI also applied to qualitative coding!

Cons

It would be good for the AI to also provide summaries of the documents being coded. This would help give an overall understanding of what the document is about, so the researcher can also think about potential patterns or themes. That would be a powerful complement to the AI coding.

### "Advantages of ATLAS.ti"

July 10, 2024

5.0

ATLAS.ti intuitive interface enabled rapid coding and analysis of large volumes of transcribed interviews. The ability to organize and visualize data through concept maps facilitated the identification of emerging patterns and themes. Furthermore, the integration of various types of data, such as texts, videos and audios, enriched the analysis. Real-time collaboration with colleagues through the web platform made teamwork efficient and fluid.

Pros

### "Professional Trainer Review"

June 15, 2022

4.0

I have enjoyed using ATLAS.ti in my own research and training. Regarding my own research, I feel I have gotten many more publications because of the ability to keep my data organized over years. The flexibility of the software allows me to ask different questions of the data and use different combinations of tools so I can develop various outputs and creative ways of reporting data. Regarding training, I have successfully introduced many users to the software-- meaning, at first they were hesitant, but once they realize how to build their knowledge, by starting with simple tasks and experimenting with combinations of those simple tasks to generate more elaborate analyses, they are excited to keep exploring and learning!

Pros

When I introduce users to the software they always appreciate the intuitive language used. There is no special terminology that needs to be learned or additional skillset acquired-- it's just learning where tools are located and how they can work together. Another strong asset of the software is the flexibility-- users can choose how they prefer to interact (i.e., through drop-down, right click, drag and drop). This is simple, but so important because it is daunting to learn a new technology. When users can rely on skills or patterns they already know, the task \[of learning something new\] is less intimidating.

Cons

The gap between Mac and Windows is significant and creates the most issues for users. When training a hybrid course, switching back and forth is tedious and it's always a little awkward when I have to say, "sorry Mac users, this isn't as easy or isn't available..."

### "Great qualitative data analysis tool for novice and professional!"

February 7, 2023

5.0

The software has a user-friendly interface and intuitive design, making the process much faster and easier for me. Atlas.ti has been extremely beneficial for my mixed method approach. Its table matrix tool made it simple for me to integrate the results from my qualitative phase, which in turn allowed me to develop my questionnaire items in a clear and organized manner. This ultimately resulted in a more efficient and effective data analysis process.I also appreciate the attractive design of the software, which made my experience more enjoyable. I have recommended it to my students as a solid choice for qualitative data analysis too. The support provided by Atlas.to trainers and consultants is also a good added value.

Pros

What I liked most about Atlas.ti was its user-friendly interface and intuitive design, which made my data analysis process much more efficient and enjoyable. The software's table matrix tool was also one of the features that I really like, as it allowed me to integrate my qualitative findings and develop my questionnaire items in a clear and organized manner.

Cons

One potential drawback of Atlas.ti is its new pricing system, which some users may find expensive. There is no no lifetime license but 3 years lease , although it is to make sure the software is update and continuous support.

### "Automated data analysis in research"

November 17, 2023

5.0

As an ATLAS.ti user who uses the tool often in his professional work, and also in the academic field, I consider it to be one of the most valuable tools for data analysis. I have a high level of satisfaction with this software, with the support of the ATLAS.ti academy and its customer service department.

Pros

By way of context, I can mention that I am an experienced user of ATLAS.ti, with more than 10 years using the tool, and teaching and advising researchers from very different disciplines on how to perform data analysis with the support of software. This experience allows me to affirm that version 23 of ATLAS.ti represents one of the most important and innovative advances in software for qualitative data analysis. Before version 23, ATLAS.ti was the leading tool in data analysis due to its intuitive interface, the integration of different data formats in the same project, and the data visualization possibilities. Version 23 made an important leap in at least three aspects. First, the incorporation of automatic coding tools and preparation of data summaries using artificial intelligence. I consider that this is a substantial change in this version, and that it represents valuable support for the analyst. Second, interoperability between the different versions of ATLAS.ti (MAC, Windows, IOS, Android and Web) has improved significantly. The versions are now more similar, and the ease of sharing projects between different platforms has improved substantially. Third, we are at a time of prolific development of artificial intelligence tools and ATLAS.ti has put two into production this year, and it is highly likely that in the coming months we will see new developments, which will facilitate and enhance data analysis. Finally, I must mention that one of the things I like most about ATLAS.ti is the positive impression it generates on students and researchers who have never used data analysis software, and when they see a demonstration or listen to a class, they get excited due to the characteristics and robustness of ATLAS.ti, which motivates them to learn and use it in their own research. This is an impression that has been constant in my ten years as a research teacher.

Cons

I think one of the aspects of improvement in ATLAS.ti is networking. Usually, when a code is networked with its citations, the citations cannot be seen completely. Adding this functionality as optional could allow you to explore the data in greater detail using networks. However, creating the networks and exporting them in graphic format is very simple.

### "Amazing automatic coding tools that drastically speed up analysis"

January 25, 2023

5.0

My experience with ATLAS.ti has been great. Before, the manual coding process was a real bottleneck for us, but now we’ve been able to analyze our data very quickly and easily with the automatic coding tools.

Pros

The software can automatically code data for opinions, sentiments, concepts, named entities (people, places, organizations, etc.), and text (along with automatically suggested synonyms). These automatic coding tools even work in multiple languages, including English, Spanish, Portuguese, German, French, Dutch, Russian, and Chinese which is very important for our research. We mostly analyze data gathered through surveys, comments from our social media posts, and video call interviews. It’s really easy to import these data, and the software even automatically codes the data to instantly organize and gather key information within each dataset. Altogether, these tools have allowed us to save so much time in analyzing our data from our different regions, I cannot even begin to calculate how much time has been saved since we don’t have to manually read and check every single response or translate our data. We import our data and collect relevant insights in just a matter of minutes!

Cons

Overall there isn’t really anything I don’t like about the software. If I could suggest an additional feature, I wish I could also have ATLAS.ti automatically transcribe audio data. This is not such a big problem because most of our audio/video data is collected through Zoom so we already get automatic transcripts that can be imported into ATLAS.ti (with the speakers automatically coded), but it would be neat to be able to do everything right inside the ATLAS.ti project.
