One of the reasons I am loyal to ATLAS.ti is because its customer service is unsurpassed. It's easy to submit questions about licensing and functions, responses are prompt, and the human beings who send the responses are knowledgeable, reasonable, and kind. They make my life easier! Pros The user interface is intuitive; running queries is easy. Cons I've been resisting the subscription format, but it's the common business model these days so I understand. I've been using v.8 for nearly a decade and I'm hoping they've done away with the bundling/unbundling function for v.24! Alternatives considered [MAXQDA](https://www.capterra.com/p/174104/MAXQDA/) Reason for choosing ATLAS.ti I kept ATLAS.ti over the years, but sometimes my clients use another product software like NVivo or MAXQDA. MAXQDA intrigued me. When I was ready to finally move past version 8, I made inquiries to both ATLAS.ti and MAXQDA. In the end, it came down to customer service. I submitted the same question to both companies. You responded in a way that I knew you thoughtfully considered my circumstances. Researcher Higher Education Used the software for: 6-12 months ### "Mixed bag, needs a LOT of improvement" March 10, 2026 3.0 A mixed bag with great disappointments. The coding feels great and I'm happy about related features, but the cloud, file management, backup, and user interface are horrible. So much potential missed out on essential things that are so standard for modern programmes. Pros I love that the codes are coloured automatically and show up as such when you go through the document, with the specific code being next to the segment that you have coded it with. I am also a fan of the concept map functionality and how you can just drag codes into it and connect them with each other, and that this creates an actual connection within the code structure, not just in the concept map itself. Cons Almost everything apart from the coding and concept map feature. I will start with the big issues: file management, the cloud feature, the user interface. File management: The way that you have to organise files is downright horrible and creates unnecessary additional work. There are no folders, so you have to put things together under Groups. If you import a document, it cannot be dragged into the group, but will just be imported without being assigned to anything. When you then want to look for that document, you have to go back to the documents, find it among all of the other ones you have, and then you can drag it into the group that it should be in. It would be so much easier if we just had folders for the documents or if you could drag a document you want to import into the group. Cloud feature: An absolute disaster. Though it is supposed to be a beta version, there is just no transparency on it. No idea where my files are, how to access this cloud (I believe you can't actually access it), and how much space you have left to upload. In addition, saving your project on a cloud service outside Atlas.ti is recommended against, which means that you have to live in constant uncertainty of whether your project stays up-to-date. Cannot really work on different computers, because you have to make sure it's uploaded and since it doesn't do that automatically, if you forget to save and manually upload again, you're screwed. There is no functionality to pull a project from the cloud, so all you can do is upload. User interface: There is just so little transparency about where to go for what you need. For example, if you go into your project, you have a settings button for application preferences, project preferences and Atlas.ti. But, this is not the right options button for when you want to know where this particular project is located. In order to find this, you have to close out of it and look for the settings in the overall project overview. Again, the decision to not put files into folders makes it much more difficult to find the documents you want. I don't really understand the decision to have an explore menu on the left. Much better to just have one consistent way to find your codes, files, etc. Switched from [NVivo](https://www.capterra.com/p/171501/NVivo/) Because the coding works better for me from a visual aspect. However, Nvivo is better in every other aspect. Cons Finding highly specific functions was a little fiddly, (I had two transcripts connected to a single audio track and was unable to delete one until I had disconnected them - a highly specific senario which was easily solved with the very responsive technical support team!) Switched from [NVivo](https://www.capterra.com/p/171501/NVivo/) Nvivo is dated and clunky with highly complex (and probably powerful) functions, although I've never used them because they are so complicated to learn and use. Nvivo is provided free by my university, but I would prefer to pay for Atlas ti as it is far more user friendly with a very shallow learning curve. The pricing structure also made it reasonable for me as a student to use for a single research project over one semester. Test Development Manager Research Used the software for: Less than 6 months ### "Great Customer Support and easy to use product, but clunky for teams" July 10, 2023 5.0 There is a learning curve to working with teams, but overall, this product is much better than some of the piecemeal products and strategies I've used for qualitative data analysis I've used in the past. I would've loved using this when I was working on my dissertation for example. I look forward to trying this tool for writing journal articles and book chapters in the future - a functionality I haven't utilized just yet but seems promising. Pros I love how easy it is to get going. Import files, put in groups, use the coding features to get tagging. I had usable codes to analyze quickly. Cons Working with a team has been so difficult. The user manual is not as clear as I'd like on how to share the work with a team of users. The customer support helped me figure it out, which was great! They were online and quickly and knowledgeably helped me. BUT, the functionality for teams is CLUNKY! Not easy to work together at all in my opinion. Coding is really easy, and it offers lots of other features that I haven't used yet, but which don't clutter up the interface for simpler tasks. So I think it's a pretty solid and simpler tool, even though it offers many options for exploring data. Pros Atlas.TI is a robust application for qualitative research. I like how light and user-friendly the interface is. It's easy to learn how to use! Researchers can collaborate online (although there is still room for improvement in this area). Cons The transition from computer to cloud is not easy. There is a 500 MB limit for importing projects from the desktop version to the cloud version. However, you will only find this out after you try to do so. It is not particularly emphasized when you start working with the desktop version. " May 8, 2025 1.0 Terrible, frustrating, slow, hiccup, non customizable, non field tested, fast coded (not compact) program, that sabotages your work, workflow, for exactly that basic elemental work you have to do in social qualitative research: transcribing and coding. The fundamental, hiccups, no customization is counter productive and especially sabotages your work(flow). It's utterly terrible. Pros I don't know, maybe the analysing after coding? The visualization, what makes it good for research. Maybe the automatic labels you can create and don't have to manually write (in the old days?). Nothing more. Cons It is the least customizable program in history. - the constant saving when you apply a code, why can't I change that? For every code I apply, I have to wait for 10 -15 seconds for the project to save. Every time! It's sabotaging my process. - The hotkeys, you cannot change hotkeys. Why? And who was the genius to program this in a way that when you transcribe, the spacebar is the pause button? When I transcribe, this very slow hiccup program, sometimes get's out of edit mode. So when you type, and push spacebar, the video recording starts to play, pauses, starts to play again, pauses. Sometimes, due to other hotkeys, the sound is muted, or you start at the beginning of the video. - Applying codes, takes a long time to process. - Constant hiccups. Slow, counter productive for research, and as a student, it really frustrates all these hiccups. With ATLAS.ti, we were able to easily handle this challenge and spend more time exploring each person’s codings and producing impacting findings. Pros Each person can work on coding at the same time, and after merging projects the codings can be compared. The intercoder agreement tool provides a great visualization to easily explore any part of the coded data, and it calculates different measures of agreement. The ease of using the programme intuitively (both Windows and Mac versions), as well as the various entities (codes, memos, groups, commenting functions, etc.) that you can choose how you want to apply it. You can create your own system of when to use a comment on a specific entity in a particular way. The flexibility within the programme is wonderful considering that computerised programmes often have one approach to which you can apply content. In other words, you can personalise your analysis approach using comments and memos to keep track of your individual approach to applying the entities. As a predominantly visual person, I absolutely love the network views that you can generate when considering how your coded data interacts. You are in control of the experience and must be mindful to generate your relational understandings as embedded in your data. When you conduct your analysis systematically and build up your smaller code-code relationships, the networks become a powerful way to visualise your abstract thoughts and ideas to communicate and disseminate data well. Cons When training others to use the programme, a rookie mistake is thinking that the programme will do the analysis for researchers. I have a high level of satisfaction with this software, with the support of the ATLAS.ti academy and its customer service department. Pros By way of context, I can mention that I am an experienced user of ATLAS.ti, with more than 10 years using the tool, and teaching and advising researchers from very different disciplines on how to perform data analysis with the support of software. This experience allows me to affirm that version 23 of ATLAS.ti represents one of the most important and innovative advances in software for qualitative data analysis. Before version 23, ATLAS.ti was the leading tool in data analysis due to its intuitive interface, the integration of different data formats in the same project, and the data visualization possibilities. Version 23 made an important leap in at least three aspects. First, the incorporation of automatic coding tools and preparation of data summaries using artificial intelligence. I consider that this is a substantial change in this version, and that it represents valuable support for the analyst. Second, interoperability between the different versions of ATLAS.ti (MAC, Windows, IOS, Android and Web) has improved significantly. The versions are now more similar, and the ease of sharing projects between different platforms has improved substantially. October 16, 2019 4.0 Pros Good functionality, not too hard to use, although more advanced functionality is harder to find out and learn to use. Analysis of data could be more extensive. Cons After doing an update of Atlas.ti 8 to the newest version (19 I think it was), I experienced some problems in the document view. About 80% of the quotations that I had made and the codes that were connected to these just disappeared directly after installation of the update. I reported the problem through the Problem Report option within Atlas, I called telephone support, I emailed the technical support team and, upon their request, I send them a Project Bundle to look into. Over the last two weeks, I have been calling 5 or 6 times to telephone support and sent multiple emails. The only response I got from telephone support (very friendly, although not able to help) was that they would pass on my request/complaints, as they couldn't do any more. I got two emails back from the technical support team in the first few days: one asking to report the problem within Atlas (which I already did and then did a second time) and to send a project bundle, the second email made apologies for waiting, confirmed receiving my project bundle and problem report and promised to get back within "a few days". That was 10 days ago. I have been waiting for two weeks now, even as it seems that this is not a very hard problem to solve (the quotations and codes are still there, no data seems to be lost), as it is just a problem in the document view. Moreover, the problem occurred directly after updating to a new version of Atlas, so literally nothing was changed in my own setting. Terrible support!!
