Pros It's very useful for individuals looking to confirm family members in a genealogical search. Cons The process of converting the scanned information from cemetery records and checking for transcription errors can be time consuming. Well worth it in the end though. Faded documents always with care a big concern. Old documents even c lipped or stapled can be scanned easily by team when setting up program at your site. Pros mapping , useful for record keeping correcting errors or missing information, leading to backed up accuracy Cons This was used to locate a grave. Many are interested in genealogy of family members. Veterans, but program offers much more with scanning. Locations finding. And customize assistance with your cemetery. It’s a researcher’s gold. Pros I was made aware of this tool around Memorial Day, when a reader of mine said she had discovered her great great grandfather was buried at Woodlawn National Cemetery in my hometown. She asked me to take a photo of his plot since she lived far away. Since then, I have connected with others who’s ancestors died in the Confederate POW camp and are buried here—all because of this amazing software. They found their relatives/roots, and I found connections to them to share their family history, which has been an invaluable tool in my book research. Cons I’m sorry I didn’t know of this software sooner. To be able to find my own loved ones‘ final resting places, or to connect with primary resources in my research of hometown history. Cemetery Find makes it easy for the staff and public to access our cemetery records. Pros BCS did a great job scanning our lot cards and joining them to burial records despite our inconsistent lot naming convention. The software is easy for staff to use in the office and in the field. It continues to save staff time and makes responding to inquiries from the public easy. Cons The mapping doesn't integrate well with our GIS. Adding new lots isn't easy, though adding burials to existing lots is. Response from Vendor February 14, 2018 The reference to: "adding new lots isn't easy" is in regards to a cemetery where existing lots are already mapped in CemeteryFind, and a new section of lots needs to be added. To add newly mapped lots a properly designed map is required from customer. CemeteryFind map is then edited to include the new section of lots. There is a cost to draw in the new section of lots. Selling an existing mapped lot does not require this effort. Simply choose the lot and enter new owner information. I forgot to mention it would be VERY helpful to be able to look up a lot or grave by owner as well as burial name. Sometimes they are different. Pros Easily accessible to partners and community. Mapping is clear. Appreciate the quick turnaround time when extending data base. Looking forward to including MHC grave marker records and digital photos for historic markers pre 1915. Hope the software can showcase these historic markers well enough to diminish calls from researchers. Cons Lack of nimbleness in retrieving records that might be one or two characters off. Having a split screen that would allow record research while mapping is showing. Our original paper records are now backed up on our file server, with a weekly copy kept off-site. Cons I don’t like that our on-line records were copied and published on Find-A-Grave. Neither Cedar Hill nor Boston Computer Scanning/CemeteryFind had given permission for anyone to use our records in this fashion. Pros The software has high functionality and is easy to use. It has made researching burials simple and allows for immediate responses to individuals requests for information. The reporting feature and export of data has simplified our distribution of information to residents and co-workers, as well as, historical researchers. Staff has become more involved due to the ease of use of the CemeteryFind software and now immerse themselves into cemetery related projects. Cons I suppose that I will say that the pages throughout the software are rather bland. Perhaps I have not looked into the possibility of adding background pictures on each of the software's landing pages, in an effort enhance the research experience, but having more visual stimulus on the pages would be beneficial. It made our job as cemetery trustees so much easier because we can access the data from home, from work, etc. and not have to schedule a trip to Town Hall. It also gives us the opportunity to build on features the software supports as our budget can afford. Pros The subscription is online and I can access it anywhere with my iPhone or laptop if I have interment or cellular coverage. We have pdf maps of our cemeteries loaded which facilitates emailing information to families and funeral homes. When we started with CemeteryFind uploaded our data, doing the best they could to have it fit into the CF fields. Cons The ability to print of information appears to be limited, though I frequently make screen shot copies and paste them into a Word document when doing research. I could be I still do not know how to use all the attributes of the program.
