### "Best Bang-for-Buck 3D CAD software"

November 20, 2025

5.0

Overall, I like using Alibre Design Pro. I can pretty much design anything I that can imagine at this point, and the workflow progression feels very natural and efficient. I'm using Alibre Design Pro for both machining and 3D printing projects, and really enjoy being able to iterate and improve my designs quickly, from concept through to finished product; Alibre is a good tool to have in my toolbox, at an affordable price.

Pros

Alibre Design was easy to learn, coming from SolidWorks, which I use at my day job. Alibre's pricing and licensing policy are very fair, and offer the best bang-for-buck, of all of the 3D CAD programs that I looked into, for my hobby and small business use. I started with Alibre Atom, and after a year of use, liked it well enough to upgrade to Alibre Design Pro; I only had to pay the difference in price between Atom and Design Pro, to get the upgrade package, again very fair, essentially getting credit for the Atom package I had bought a year before. I like that the license is perpetual, and the fact that the service update subscription is optional, which helps control the cost. Overall, I find Alibre Design Pro to be very usable and capable 3D design software.

Cons

Like any software, there are occasional minor quirks, and there have been rare crashes to the desktop. I will say Alibre support was very responsive about one repeatable bug in the Loft dialog that I reported, but it took a while for them to reproduce it on their end, even after a number of emails back and forth. A fix should be coming in the next service release. I would really like to see Alibre offer a "Finder's Fee" for reporting reproducible bugs; this would help make Alibre a better product, by soliciting and utilizing very specific user feedback. A suitable "Finder's Fee" incentive could be a free year's worth of service updates, for each bug reported.

### "Way to go Alibre"

November 21, 2025

5.0

A lot of our tasks involve setting jigs for small production runs. Maybe for alignment or to hold parts for press fitting. Ten minutes in Alibre, output an .stp for the slicer and the job is a good 'un.

Pros

Not at all the steep learning curve I've come to expect from complex design software. Alibre really is a breeze to use. It is in daily use for general mechanical design, 2D workshop drawings, and an ever growing number of 3D printing jobs. There is nothing it cannot do for us. We are a tiny design and manufacturing operation so keeping control of expenditure is extremely important. Alibre's licensing options are perfect for this. There's masses of "how to..." videos on YT and elsewhere, one is never at a loss how to do something.

Cons

This is a tough one - there's not really anything to dislike. I found it difficult to set up defaults (dimension styles, set to use millimetres etc.) and get them to persist between drawing sessions.

### "The Alibre Design Advantage"

July 23, 2025

5.0

Alibre Design Professional is a great, affordable replacement for Inventor and Solidworks. Like myself, most retired individuals can't afford thousands of dollars yearly to maintain a subscription and this package delivers the best for anyone who is retired but still does some development and contract work.

Pros

Great tool, compatibility with step files, has handled everything I needed to do, and is very close to the package I use at work. Enjoying the new tools added with this update and look forward to new innovations from the development team. So far, lacks nothing, still experimenting with the pdm (vault) feature, seems like a good setup for alike parts and assemblies, and it gives a form of parametrics to deal with similar part profiles. The value to me for a complete 3d design solution, is very attractive and , like I said, export capabilities to other design platforms allows me to create E-drawing models for customers to view. Never had a support issue, basically, hit the ground running. Assemblies are easy to create, and I can import parts from virtually any source. I would like to explore more of the toolbox capabilities, see what that is capable of doing. What a great package!!

Cons

The rendering is very limited, would like to manipulate color palette, light sources, and have realistic texturing capabilities.

### ""Old man" continues to enjoy working with Alibre Design"

June 6, 2025

5.0

Though I am officially "retired" from my engineering work, I continue to do projects and make increasing use of FDM printing of mechanical parts. My Alibre tools get me quickly and efficiently from model concept through to generation of a .stl file that I can move into slicer software and on to my printer. That is a very rewarding experience.

Pros

I've used Alibre Design Professional for many years (20+) and have seen continuous improvements. One in particular is just better images, I seldom feel the need to go into photo-rendering software to get a great screenshot that conveys my ideas to others.

Cons

It's not so much what I like least, but more of a wish list item, in an area where your obvious competitor, Solidworks, apparently also offers nothing in the following area: It would be great if I could control a sequence of views from a .csv file, so that I could more readily generate animations of sequences of images, for instance coming out of flight simulation software that I've developed. Processes like that are currently just under mouse control, where one cannot generate a smooth sequence of viewing angles with smoothly varying zoom, by hand. I do appreciate that challenges and plain old work that this would place on your software engineers, but I nevertheless point out how valuable it would be if you started moving into this kind of territory.

### "Best for small woodworking shop"

June 3, 2025

4.0

Excellent. Meets all my 3D design needs. Use case: One-off furniture design and build. Use Alibre to design and iterate ideas then create 2-d shop drawings for construction.

Pros

The combination of price and capabilities, Alibre Design is the best tool to facilitate the flow from rough pencil-sketch, to 3d model to 2d shop drawings. I appreciate that Alibre Design is not bogged down with "featureitis". The Alibre Design developers focus on making the tools great without the burden of marketing fluff. I also appreciate the "buy once to own" sales model as opposed to the ubiquitous software-as-subscription subscription model.

Cons

The UI seems dated and a bit disjointed. Some of the tools (ESC to de-select) are not as responsive as I would like.

### "A Fantastic Everyday Tool"

June 12, 2025

5.0

Ease of learning, cost, great community response to problems, and interchangeability with other CAD tools. I use it to conceptualize everything from work to personal projects. I love it!

Pros

The learning curve was very easy. Cost for Design Expert is very reasonable. Creating concepts and generating realistic renderings in Keyshot is awesome.

Cons

Lack of NURBS and surfacing tools. I got creative using 3D sketching, lofts and sweeps. The new fillet functions gives me more flexibility.

### "Awesome 3D CAD program for beginner to expert, licensing the way you want it."

September 21, 2025

5.0

I'm really glad I found and use Alibre for my 3d modeling for general CAD and lots of 3d printing stuff.

Pros

Can install it on my machine, easy to setup and they have great getting started tutorials for the beginner 3D modeler! I really like their pricing structure, subscription based or one time based with option to pay for upgrades as needed. Plus, I was able to write my own plugin to tightly integrate it to Orca Slicer for 3d printer. Customer support has been awesome and very responsive when I've reached out to them.

Cons

Not much! Sometimes it crashes when I'm applying fillets on lots of edges and faces but always back up and running quickly. Do wish the community was bigger or just more well known, as it's a hidden gem it seems. Also wish they had a 2d parametric only version... though I can use just a simple sketch for simplistic scenarios.

### "It checked all my boxes."

November 23, 2025

5.0

I would recommend you product to people that want a solid piece of cad software, that you can purchase outright, and for me does exactly what I need. I know I am at the low end of your use cases, but I am glad you are there.

Pros

I will start with I am a hobbyist. I have a 3d printer and didn't want to rely on everyone else doing the work for something I needed. I am also a person that hates subscription services. 3D Atom allows me a program that is nice to work in and I OWN my copy of it. I am able to wrap my head around the process of working in it and I like the work flow.

Cons

The one complaint I have is the tutorials that I can find. I really need more detailed use demonstrations. I'm not sure that is a great way of saying it, but I have a little bit of a hard time following them. I am still able to figure out what you are showing me and again, I am happy with your product.

### "When you can't afford SW, get Alibre!"

March 25, 2025

5.0

Awesome! I have MeshCam also which I use with my Carbide 3D Nomad cnc machine. Even though I teach SolidWorks to students, I pitch this software to them when they graduate because it is affordable, effective, the support is top notch with same day(sometimes hour) response.

Pros

The support is excellent. Always available within moments of asking for support help. That alone is priceless.

Cons

I haven't checked the latest version, but it would be very convenient to add bolt circle patterns at the blueprint creation stage instead of modifying the part model. I use Alibre for making blueprints quite often and this is a constant headache.

### "My experience with Alibre Atom"

August 24, 2025

5.0

I've been an Alibre user for about three years now and my overall experience with Alibre Atom has been excellent.

Pros

There are a number of things which make Alibre a great choice. First is that one purchases a license and does not have to subscribe to a service with a monthly or annual fee. Second, having Alibre transferable among computers means that I can have it at home and then transfer the license to my laptop for travel, and then back to my home computer again upon my return. Third, and most important, is Alibre was very easy to learn. In a very short period of time I was making models which I could then 3D print. The tutorials are excellent with examples.

Cons

I'm sure there are some cons to Alibre which could be identified by a more sophisticated user but for my applications I have not found anything which I was not able to do.

### "Great value for the price"

June 15, 2025

5.0

I've been using it for many years, and appreciate the effort the Alibre team makes for continuous upgrades. I've used it both for designing parts for my 3D printer and also for "architectural" drawings of larger parts.

Pros

Great value for the price. Their customer support is responsive - usually within hours. Flexibility in import/export formats

Cons

The only feature I wish was better would be applying "hatching" in Drawings. In an industrial-grade program I was using before I retired, I could just click inside an area and apply hatching. In Alibre, you have to meticulously define the exact boundaries of the space; not even lines that go past the boundaries of the hatched area will work; all the lines and arcs must connect to each other seamlessly.

### "Happy reviewer. Keep up the good fight."

Good generally apart from threads that can be printed. Most other tools offer this out of the box for high end tool. Limited training, but will give you it’s getting better. Thanks

Pros

Simple for basic engineers and high end honest. Love that it a continuous license.

Cons

Lack of structural threads is a massive issues to be able to print on a printer directly. Lack of support for 5 axis cnc generation. I have the top end tool which is great but all offers are for other versions to move up to top level. I paid full price now I feel left out of offers when you give them. Do not offer options for disabled in terms of keeping in support maintenance when harder to earn money to support keeping it supported.

### "Feedback about Alibre Design"

August 11, 2025

5.0

Despite the issues with the "help" feature, I am happy with the software. It has materially leveraged our capabilities. We have been using it for years.

Pros

It is incredibly powerful software available at an affordable price. We use it for its solid model design capabilities and also to reveal X/Y coordinates needed to construct CNC machining programs.

Cons

The software-resident and online "help" feature is too rigid and finding solutions to specific issues involves lots of guessing and lots of lost time. Support via email is good, but not real-time, when users are at an impasse and need immediate resolution before being able to move forward with the task at hand.

### "Alibre 3D CAD. The unknown Gem"

December 9, 2024

5.0

I started with Atom in early 2023 but very soon upgraded to to Alibre Design Expert for all of the extra features. It is a superb piece of software. I've just taken out 12 months maintenance so I can upgrade and now have Alibre PDM. You only need maintenance if you require the latest features and top level support (which is superb). If not then carry on without maintenance. There's also a user forum which is great for sharing ideas, tips & tricks etc.

Pros

Ease of use, Efficiency of software, Price, Value for money, Lifetime license.

Cons

### "Highly reccomended software"

January 13, 2025

5.0

I have been using it professionally for over ten years. I mainly use it to produce drawings for manufacturing for parts that are produced in various ways including sheet metal, CNC machining, 3D printed parts, and custom aluminum extrusions. I also use it extensively for modeling complex assemblies to determine whether parts will fit in a customer's application before they have the parts in hand.

Pros

Alibre Design is a fully capable parametric modeling application and I can complete a product design from idea to model to production ready drawings all in the same program. The learning curve is not steep and the price is quite reasonable. In addition, the developers are responsive to customer feedback and are continuously improving the software.

Cons

It has some idiosyncrasies that can take getting used to, especially with the 2D drawing section. However there have been improvements in this area in the last few years especially.

### "Alibre Design is the best solids program on the market"

October 26, 2024

5.0

I was delighted in discovering how easy it was to create special client drawings and layouts. The ability to create a child parts list connected to the assembly drawings that can be manually edited is unmatched and very powerful. The ability to compute weights of assemblies that easily flow into a top assembly is excellent.

Pros

For a solids program with engineering precision, high caliber design, it hits the Sweet Spot of capability, functionality, cost, and ease of use.

Cons

That it only runs on a PC. Most of my day today computing occurs on a MacOS system and it forces me to have a separate windows computer networked with all documents saved to my Mac. It is how I have operated my successful engineering business for nearly 20 years.
