Engineer Farming Used the software for: 1-2 years ### "Alibre after 1.5 years" November 25, 2020 5.0 Very positive experience. Have used it to create photorealistic renders for customers. Have used other features to design sheet metal parts that are fabricated for on site use. Pros I really like the ability to not only create individual parts, but to have the assembly capabilities. Another awesome feature is the sheet metal parts that can be created with Alibre. Then there is also the paper space mode where I am able to create detailed drawings for ordering or customer requests. Cons Sometimes features that would be present in Solidworks or Autocad aren't exactly the same, licensing and copyright. Alibre does there best to implement new features to make a more seamless transition from one of those software packages to the Alibre. The support team is always very graciously accepting bugs and recommendations about what should be changed or added. Also I like a lot the script engine to manage repetitive task. Any idea I come up with can be modeled up in short order, and then rendered or 3D printed, and drawings or solid model files made for contractors. It's also useful for making drill templates. Fantastic and indispensable tool in my shop. Pros Its parametric modeling is easy to use. Model manipulation is fast on less than stellar computers. One can be productive using it almost from day one, and then further facility can be gained gradually as applications arise for each of the many cool features. Cons There are some UI inconsistencies and procedural oddities. One that always bothers me is that selection of multiple elements requires shift-clicks in some contexts, but just clicks in others, which can lead to having to repeat an operation. Really, though, overall, the oddities are easy enough to get used to. Review Source RG Robert G. Pros I use the boolean features quite often to develop tooling. It is relatively easy to use. Cons Placement of initial components in assemblies is putsy. I prefer a dragon and drop of the first component that aligns itself automatically to the assembly datum planes. Overall assembly constraints can be quite a challenge, especially if some blow up, turns into a major cluster when trying to troubleshoot. Review Source RB Robert B. The software doesn't fight me and enables me to be the most creative version of myself. Pros Easy to use, intuitive interface, little to no errors or failures, easy to see if I make mistakes, powerful export control, very easy assemblies, and best of all... the stuff you make is yours. Cons No Linux support. You have to open a sketch to get at the equations dialog. Switched from [Autodesk Fusion](https://www.capterra.com/p/178416/Fusion-360/)[FreeCAD](https://www.capterra.com/p/167527/FreeCAD/) I switched from FreeCAD because Alibre let's me build complex geometry without having to constantly rebuild it. I switched from Fusion 360 because I enjoy actually owning the models I create. Pros The parametric aspect works really well for fine adjustments and multiple iterations Cons It's not super strong with organic forms, but it does work well with Rhino, and the ability to output 3D pdf files is great. Pros Once self-trained, there is nothing that can't be designed. I used to use it in medical device R&D work, now I use it to design 3D printed art objects. I also like that it is not a subscription. Some what to do videos would help. Pros I like that you can draw 3 dimensional parts and then assemble the parts to build a machine that can be manipulated like the real machine Cons I have found it difficult to find the tools I need to use within the program. Probably because there are so many and there is more than one place where a particular function is located. Pros The user interface is very user-friendly and also easy on the eyes. Also moving from a 3D workspace to 2D drawing is pretty seamless. Cons Only a few features I could think of that will save a lot of time are being able to offset entities and keep some sort of relationship i.e. if I offset a circle, I expect that circle to be concentric to the other circle. Cons Can be a bit annoying at times particularly when a sketch is not fully defined other cad programs have a much better "self healing" situation. The sheet metal program could be improved at the moment it's a bit of an afterthought. Software bugs cause a lot of frustration but you get what you pay for here! Pros Easy to pick up coming from SolidWorks etc. Does all of the simple things you need a CAD package to do. Cons Bugs, crashes, failures, freezes! When working on complex parts/assemblies, Alibre will not do the job reliably. Problems come intermittently at nearly every step of the way. Working full-time on this software is very frustrating and requires workarounds only a competent user can manage.
