McGraw Hill does not deserve to be a website used by teachers to actually teach stuff. Pros I did not like anything about McGraw Hill. It is "genuinely atrocious." Why schools use this for learning is beyond me. Cons The text does not make sense. On some buttons, it says "submit" even though it is just asking you what setting you want. Multiple people were confused because they thought they had to actually submit something. Also, the website has no help buttons, no how-to buttons, no nothing. It is also extremely laggy, and takes almost a full minute to load the website. Finally, it doesn't actually teach you anything! Pros A person can find games, including links to Kahoot Games, guided readings, presentations, videos, current events resources, interactives, etc. on McGraw-Hill Connect. My students actually enjoy completing assignments online using the software. Once students finish an assignment, they get feedback immediately. This allows the teacher to see what each student is having trouble with. Pros McGraw-Hill Connect is a mathematical software created by McGraw-Hill. One of the main things I love about the software is I can integrate the program for all of my math classes. I have taught Algebra 2, Trigonometry, Geometry, and Senior Transition. I was able to integrate Connect for each of these classes. The best feature is Connect tailors' assignments for each individual student. If a student is struggling with a certain type of problem, the program will make sure to give that student more problems to practice. Students no longer have to keep doing the same type of problem over and over again. Connect has made my life so much easier. Cons One of the only complaints I have for Connect is it's difficult to learn all of the available features. It took me awhile to figure out how everything worked. I’m able to have to etext on an app on my phone as well as being able to access it from my desktop. Another thing I liked is the explanations that were given for each problem rather than just the answers being given. Cons One thing that could be improved is when you click to see the report of a completed assignment it would be simpler if it took you straight to that specific report but instead it takes you a list of all the reports and then you have to find the specific report you want. Students have study tools and interactive modules to help understand material more fluently. Teachers can view reports so they can alter their teaching style and approach. Cons McGraw-Hill could use some updating to the appearance of the interface. It looks like it hasn't been changed. There is difficulty with connecting it as a third-party application. There is not a clear or simple way for students to communicate with their professor within McGraw-Hill. There needs to be better and more accessible versions such as for mobile devices to encourage use-on-the-go. Pros As a teacher, I like that I can transform my classroom with the digital textbooks as resources available in Connect that accompany my print materials. Our school has setup automatic class rostering so it is great that I do not need to manage student user accounts or set up classrooms and add students. However, compared to some of its publisher competitors that I also utilize, it is way behind the curve in terms of function and UI. Cons The user-interface within Connect (both from a teacher and student user) could use some major upgrades. It seems that very little resources are put into the system and/or they are not utilizing user feedback to improve the product. It's only going to get better. The question is whether the price will be worth it for what is essentially supplemental features. Pros Using the McGraw-Hill Connect with an online biochemistry course, I could see that the company took a lot of effort to pack innovative features to not only supplement the paper textbook but to advance what publishers can do for higher education. These advancements include dynamic quizzes, bookmark syncing, supplemental animations for individual topics/chapters, etc. It's really jam-packed with resources that are organized in an intuitive way. It's also a web-based platform. I didn't have any trouble accessing Connect through a PC or Mac which was nice. Customer service replied quickly and intelligently to any issues I had regarding subscription periods and key redemptions. Cons The cost. I understand a considerable amount of investment is needed to curate and manage these online resources. But as schools are moving toward open source content in response to student backlash against rising textbook prices, it makes it more difficult to swallow an online subscription that will be gone compared to a physical textbook that can be resold. Granted - having the online component is much more convenient and an effective learning tool. But the price needs to come down. Review Source ET Elizabeth T. Its definitely a staple in higher education. Pros As someone who uses this software throughout the week religiously I can say that I've never had any complains. You know you've worked in higher education for too long when just by looking at the logo brings back memories of late nights and coffee. McGraw hill's UI and UX is much to be desired. It has led to unnecessary prolonged study sessions and a test of patience for a student that is trying hard to understand the material. I am a student that would like to not have to understand the education platform as well. Pros McGraw-Hill is aspiring to create an online ecosystem in which a student (such as myself) can learn on a PC/Phone/tablet. That is really cool, and I'm glad I can take my homework with me on my phone, makes it easy to connect and get to work. Cons The overall feel and experience of using McGraw Hill connects platform is akin to a prison yard. The online book will not let me copy text or use external reading functionality. This prevents me from googling difficult topics or taking notes for my exam with ease. The smartlearn platform is nit picky and incorrect in it's time assessments. An assignment that should take an hour ends up taking 4 because of repeat questions and a failure to move forward. The book we are using has yielded multiple mistakes which makes me (the user) second guess if I have the correct answer or if the book is wrong. I think McGraw Hill is trying hard to keep it's users from propagating the educational material it hosts, which I understand. But I would like to say it does it at the expense of a grad students sanity and patience. Please focus on the UX and UI, because right now it is unenjoyable. Connect allows me to complete homework assignments to further my education and ensure I have a good grasp of the material. Pros McGraw-Hill Connect allows educators and students to digitally assign and complete homework. Connect provides a variety of testing and work options, from timed, password protected quizzes to textbook readings and questions. Educators have the ability to choose options that fit their needs - should the students have access to the book to make a quiz open-book? Should they have the ability to check the correctness of their work (once? unlimited times?)? McGraw-Hill has designed problem sets that complement their textbooks. This means students are able to do homework directly related to the material they are learning. If desired, Connect has hint videos that walk students through the steps necessary to complete a problem. Cons The solutions provided by Connect are not overly helpful. At times, the hint videos or solutions will provide a way to solve a problem that is different than the method taught in the textbook. Connect could use some work on consistency in this area. Pros Connect is a great supplemental tool for the classroom, and is a great place for e-learning. It is available for a variety of classes, and offers differentiated activities and practice. It is available to students at school and home, so they always have access to the needed material. Cons It can be a bit difficult to located exactly what you want, as there are many resources and the setup is not as organized as I'd like.
