The software can be used in conjunction with Provalis Research's WORDSTAT for more powerful textual analysis features. It can also be purchased as part of a package in the company's Prosuite, a combination of several powerful qualitative and quantitative analysis tools. Pros The software is very well-priced for academic and students, especially for the one-time purchase price. QDA Miner offers a range of powerful analysis tools for coding, querying coded data, producing reports. The interface is very intuitive and easy to use, a feature that significantly reduces the amount of time needed to begin using the software. QDA Miner offers a range of analytical features that will almost certainly surpass the needs most users. Cons When importing PDFs, QDA Miner does not preserve the look/format of the PDF, but rather strips out the text and places it in the viewing frame. While the reasons for this approach are understandable (it is difficult to include a PDF editor inside a powerful QDA app; there are difficulties with column and page breaks in PDFs), this approach converts nice-looking PDFs into messy text files that are difficult to read. Because at least half of my data sources are PDFs, this approach (stripping out text only) is not very visually appealing. Also, QDA Miner does not allow for coding video or audio files. To me, this is a huge oversight in today's research environment where audio and especially video files are increasingly important. One final note, but one which is hardly important, is that the GUI interface looks very dated and looks like software from the early 2000s. It could use a refresh. Nonetheless, this should not detract buyers- this is is an outstanding application. Also, it is one of the few QDA tools that still offers users an option for outright purchase rather than purchasing a one-year lease. The research team I work with generally avoids any leased software. Also, QDA Miner can be used in tight conjunction with WordStat, and SimStat, two other analytical software from Provalis Research. The ability to use these three integrated tools is useful for any organization that wishes to enhance its analytical approaches beyond the tool set in QDA Miner. I Had efficiently accomplished the thesis with it, though the restrictions in the free version hampered me not to conduct advanced analysis. Since then, I have introduced it to my department, promoted and shared it with my colleagues. I have also taught them how to use it. And now, my students and colleagues are familiar with it. Right now, I have processed several projects with my students and colleagues using it. Pros It is very easy to use, but still powerful to manage sophisticated data. It is efficient because it doesn't use commands (syntax). It has a free version (open-source alternative): Lite version. It bears features to manage mixed data. It lets us read, edit, import, and export multiple types of files. We can easily integrate it with other programs. It is a multi-language software. It helps to conduct meta-synthesis and systematic reviews. Cons Its free version has significant restrictions. The outputs in the word cloud are not catchy.
