September 29, 2018 5.0 Pros Once you learn how to get things set up, using QuickBooks starts to save you significant amounts of time in a lot of different ways. The basic functions that all businesses need of payroll and tax withholding for employees is done very easily and saves a ton of time. Same thing is true for getting your taxes done easily and importing that info easily for your CPA / TurboTax. Cons It takes a bit of time to get set up and can be a bit daunting with the amount of features that it has. This is still sort of a pro about the software, since this con only exists due to it's amount of features and thoroughness. However, there's probably more easily user interface designs that could help with this. Again, this is a not a major concern in the grand scheme of things. Owner Accounting Used the software for: 2+ years ### "Quickbooks Accountant Version" November 10, 2016 4.0 I have used quickbooks Accountant for at least a decade. I only utilize certain features, but find it to be a very useful, versatile tool for small cash-based service businesses of all entity types. I do find that it takes some time to learn how to use various features and that some things which occur automatically within the software can be problematic and finding answers about how to undo those things is challenging. Quickbooks tends to create the impression that people without any bookkeeping experience can be assisted with their books very easily, but as a CPA, I find that most non-professional sets of books that I receive where they were created with quickbooks are filled with errors and problems that take a much longer time to resolve than should be the case. However, with the help of a knowledgeable person, anyone can learn how to keep much better track of what is going on in their business and how to understand what the various numbers mean in the reports produced. For my practice, I find it is a very useful tool and I can easily adapt most of the records from my clients into the system and quickbooks make it much easier for me to track my clients' business records and assist them with their business and tax planning as a result. Pros Adapatability to client needs - any types of vendors, customers, categories in chart of accounts - it's capable of all of them Cons Difficult to track down automatically created errors and accounts you didn't want and correct problems once they are created. If the billing statement can be improved more, it will be best. Pros It is user-friendly. It populates the financial statements: Balance Sheet, Income Statement and Cash Flows, and other supporting financial reports. It has a feature to let you know if your entry is not balanced which is very good. Cons I like least is the presentation of billing statement. I prefer it to be in 5 columns instead of 4 only. Specialized versions helped to meet the needs of specific industries. The program is fairly intuitive for those who have experience with bookkeeping. Cons The online version is heavily pushes by Intuit, but it is not as easy to navigate as the desktop version. Every click matters when you are trying to enter data, and the online version makes the process more time consuming. It is also frustrating to not be able to open several windows at the same time. There is a hack to bypass this, but it is still a limitation overall compared to the desktop version. You can quickly set it up to work on your personal computer, or set it up to be shared office-wide for multiple users to access and use. No similar software I've used has come close to matching the functionality and accessibility of Quickbooks. Cons I have worked on issues with users having older versions of Quickbooks installed along with newer versions, and it causing issues when trying to open documents in the older version. This issue is fixable with a little work, and is only going to come up in rare cases. Otherwise there is very little for me to complain about. While never pushing the program to its limits in terms of different modules---never used it for payroll or check preparation, for example, and don't keep realtime inventory control records, the QuickBooks program has fulfilled all our perceived needs for invoicing and enabling close monitoring of income by customer, both for retail-type and wholesale modes of selling products. There is excellent user forum and blog advice available, owing to the immense number of active users, so almost any problem has already been answered somewhere searchable on the Internet. Reports have been useful for yearend use by various accountants for annual tax preparation, and all such professionals we have used for over a decade have been highly familiar with QuickBooks. Larger databases as years accumulate and number of products increase does require enhanced server speed and capabilities plus faster networking hardware to avoid time lagging when preparing invoices. Definitely a powerful and flexible choice of accounting software for a small or even medium-sized business user. Pros Universality---every accounting professional is highly familiar with the product. Cons Pricing has been getting steeper over the years. Need to upgrade hardware every now and then is necessary to keep speed of transactions acceptable. I also think that the deposits can be confusing because some items I know have been deposited but still show up when I go to match deposits. It ingrates with our project well, has all the features that we need and is fairly easy to use. Pros I like the options to customize nearly every workflow to fit the companies needs. I also like that fact that as we can grow into using the features one section at a time (such as check writing or reporting), and they do not require me to use other features(such as invoicing) Cons The thing that I like the least about Quick Books is the reporting feature. I have spoken to many people and the sad truth is that it is still the best software out there for complete accounting in small businesses, it's getting worse, not better as the prices increase. But, if you can afford it, I would still recommend it over all of the other "common" apps/programs out there because it still outperforms them all. Pros This is a \*complete\* accounting system including bank reconciliations and attention paid to balance sheet accounts unlike some other apps which only aggregate P&L info. Classes make tracking multiple segments/trade lines extremely easy and effective. Rules are a nice feature for speeding up the process of entering transactions in the bank feeds. Reports are highly customizable. Cons Price keeps going up with only those with the most complex needs getting equivalent value. Common sense improvements/fixes continue to not be implemented. Bank feeds break too often. The app absolutely sucks--it doesn't remember credentials and if you manage multiple clients often gives a permission error when switching between them. Cons Realistically, the only CON is the fact that the desktop version is not compatible with MacOS which many people use, nowadays. So the user will either have to purchase a Windows OS based PC, or subscribe to a cloud based thin-client service that runs Micorsoft OS. It's not the easiest product to use, in part because they were one of the first electronic offerings. It's easy for the new kid on the block to see the design flaws and shortcomings of current offerings and to address these. That being said, they have done a stellar job in adapting with the times, while at the same time not alienating their existing customers. If you want one accounting package for life, you cannot go wrong with them.
