Pros We are able to do sales receipts to track our donors, generate receipts, and track income and expenses in multiple categories as well as do bank reconciliations. Cons The functionality doesn't integrate into an easy format for donor development. It seems a waste to enter the donor information twice. Vice President Accounting Used the software for: 2+ years ### "A Broad Scope" November 3, 2016 4.0 I have used various Quickbooks product both online and on the desktop and have found them to be satisfactory. The desktop has great functionality and is very flexible - which is great because almost any industry can be served by Quickbooks. The online software takes some getting used to for users of the desktop software, but offers similar workflows and functionality. Because it is web based, each action takes a bit longer than the corresponding desktop action, but the ability to work from anywhere is worth that few seconds. The learning curve can be steep in Quickbooks for people who are not tech natives or who do not have any experience with accounting, but with a little studying (and planning), the opportunities are endless for how QB can provide meaningful data to help your company grow. If you plan to use QB and do not have any experience with bookkeeping or accounting, I highly recommend finding a proadvisor to at least review your setup and make sure everything is correct before you get to far into your business. It could save you thousands of dollars in clean-up work down the road by starting out right and using the features of the software appropriately (like bank reconciliation, bills/invoices, etc.). Pros The cloud-based version, the power and functionality to serve multiple industries. Cons The online version can be a bit buggy at times. Some difficulty in navigating the product. Pros QuickBooks is pretty easy to use and fairly straightforward to set up, even for a non-accounting person like myself. The product is heavily used in the industry, which makes it easy to send a copy to our accountant in order to get our tax returns done. Cons The product can sometimes be clunky in its interface and not intuitive in its navigation. It feels a bit like a product that has had its UI modernized, but its background processing is still built on an old legacy product. There are some fields that are difficult to update and it is sometimes hard to find support around making changes; this is especially prevalent now that the online version is available; many support docs apply to the online version and not the installed version. Payroll taxes took some outside expertise to help set up but are pretty self propelled at this point. If we didn't use for payroll, not sure I'd use it. Pros Payroll feature is easy and fairly intuitive to set up. We've grown from $50,000 in annual payroll to over a couple of million on it and it still suits are needs. Cost is fair for functionality. Cons Phone app is wonky and general accounting features still best used by an outside account. Without some business background, I'd be totally lost. We've had one issue with an old employee that got rehired and not being able to access payroll stubs... support department wasn't any help. It helps me run my business successfully. Cons The only thing I would say could be a con would be the price. As a small business owner who is just working for herself, I can definitely say that I probably spend the most monthly on quickbooks fees because I pay for monthly fees to use the system, fees that come out of money earned, and also on top of the payroll fees. September 29, 2018 5.0 Pros Once you learn how to get things set up, using QuickBooks starts to save you significant amounts of time in a lot of different ways. The basic functions that all businesses need of payroll and tax withholding for employees is done very easily and saves a ton of time. Same thing is true for getting your taxes done easily and importing that info easily for your CPA / TurboTax. Cons It takes a bit of time to get set up and can be a bit daunting with the amount of features that it has. This is still sort of a pro about the software, since this con only exists due to it's amount of features and thoroughness. However, there's probably more easily user interface designs that could help with this. Again, this is a not a major concern in the grand scheme of things. I only utilize certain features, but find it to be a very useful, versatile tool for small cash-based service businesses of all entity types. I do find that it takes some time to learn how to use various features and that some things which occur automatically within the software can be problematic and finding answers about how to undo those things is challenging. Quickbooks tends to create the impression that people without any bookkeeping experience can be assisted with their books very easily, but as a CPA, I find that most non-professional sets of books that I receive where they were created with quickbooks are filled with errors and problems that take a much longer time to resolve than should be the case. However, with the help of a knowledgeable person, anyone can learn how to keep much better track of what is going on in their business and how to understand what the various numbers mean in the reports produced. For my practice, I find it is a very useful tool and I can easily adapt most of the records from my clients into the system and quickbooks make it much easier for me to track my clients' business records and assist them with their business and tax planning as a result. Pros Adapatability to client needs - any types of vendors, customers, categories in chart of accounts - it's capable of all of them Cons Difficult to track down automatically created errors and accounts you didn't want and correct problems once they are created. If the billing statement can be improved more, it will be best. Pros It is user-friendly. It populates the financial statements: Balance Sheet, Income Statement and Cash Flows, and other supporting financial reports. It has a feature to let you know if your entry is not balanced which is very good. Cons I like least is the presentation of billing statement. I prefer it to be in 5 columns instead of 4 only.
