Systems Administrator Education Management Used the software for: 2+ years ### "PowerSchool - A Good SIS Choice" May 20, 2021 4.0 We use PowerSchool as our SIS. We're looking in to the PS registration piece and we use a couple other modules as well. PowerSchool is extensible with plugins and easily accessible to most third party apps that need data from it, assuming the third party knows what they're doing. Pros PowerSchool has improved a LOT in the last few years. The interface is MUCH cleaner and usable, their security focus has shown in many changes we've seen to recent versions, and generally it just works. I've worked long enough with it to know how to troubleshoot most issues. It's actually pretty easy and accessible for us tech folks when dealing with server issues. Our users generally like it. Cons Some of the issues that pop up are silly things like services not starting all of the sudden, and it can be very touchy when you need to restart the server it's running on. If you don't shut down the PowerSchool services properly, you can end up with a broken instance. Review Source CO Crystal O. Teacher Primary/Secondary Education Used the software for: 2+ years ### "PowerSchool" October 7, 2020 5.0 Pros As a teacher, PowerSchool allows us to take attendance, input grades, find data on each student, and will even allow you to create a diagram for student seating. Students are also able to access PowerSchool in order to look at their grades and missing assignments. PowerSchool is easy to navigate and easy to use. It is a great program. I've been using PowerSchool for over 10 years. Cons PowerSchool has regular routine maintenace where they update the program. I have not seen any improvements with these updates. Cons I do not love that you have to download the gradebook program. I know that they have a new version that you can use online, but it is not great either. Still has a lot of glitches. I'm hoping this improves soon so we could roll it out in our district. This would make it much better for teachers. Review Source KE Kelly E. Pros I love Powerschool! I have been using it for several years. It is awesome in that it keeps up with tardies, absences - both excused and unexcused, and of course it keeps up with assignments and grades. I love the various reports that it can run. Cons We could use Powerschool for more than we use it. Looks like lunch counts can be kept and discipline issues can be input into Powerschool, but we don't use those features at this time. I have one place that I go to to get to my attendance, gradebook and state resources for instruction. I can also see which of my students' parents are using the Parent Portal to monitor their students grades. Cons I don't have any complaints about the software itself. I would like to see my school use even more of its features, like Daily Announcements! That would eliminate the need for many of the emails I receive throughout the day. Review Source PD Peter D. I have used four of the major SMS systems and PowerSchool is weak in some areas and strong in others. They all have their drawbacks, but PowerSchool was the most budget friendly option for a district with 10K+ students. Pros I like the ability to use the APEX SQL system to get any data that I want Cons PowerSchool has a large learning curve and requires some technical prowess with understanding how tables link in a database. It also allows us to communicate electronically with parents via texting, calling, and email, allowing our school to go paperless. Cons The data pull from our old software didn't pull correctly. This left us with the task of manually entering in missing and incorrect information for numerous students so that we could effectively communicate with the appropriate parties before school starts in August. Pros I love that I can see my son's school progress and if he's in class or not. It also lets me know if assignments are missing, wow! I can also track if I need to update funds for his meal plan or other school bills. Cons I wish it would allow you to send messages to the teachers or scan documents that the school needed. Cons The new gradebook was challenging to adjust to, but now there is a way to preview grades before entering them which makes it better. Principal Education Management Used the software for: 2+ years ### "PowerSchool - The Industry Standard SIS" May 12, 2020 5.0 We use PowerSchool daily for all of the activities mentioned above, and more. Pros PowerSchool is the industry standard SIS out there. It takes training and some familiarity, but once you gain that, the tool can cover a tremendous amount of school related needs - scheduling, reporting, grading, etc. Great job PowerSchool. Cons The only hurdle to PowerSchool is the fairly extensive traning needed to really learn it well. Otherwise, it's a great product! It's a good comprehensive option for student management. Pros I love that there are portals for parents, students, teachers, admin. I love that what each of those groups sees is tailored to why they are accessing the software. There are multiple ways to customize the data that is collected. Cons Reporting can be a little cumbersome, and having to go up the food chain to accomplish certain tasks can be irritating. February 2, 2019 5.0 Pros I love the grading system that is implemented into PowerSchool, not only does it serve as a reward for employees who turn in their stuff on time, thus giving them the 100%, but it also serves as an incentive for employers to assign their work virtually, as to grade their employees on it. Not only that, but using PowerSchool is extremely easy, as one can just log in and view their assignments! Cons PowerSchool would sometimes go down for maintenance, which would be annoying at times, but is necessary as the company needs to keep their software updated and in good shape. It is great to evaluate students needs because you can access prior years progress. Pros It holds unlimited student documents and can even access student documents from other schools with admin privileges Cons It is nit always the easy to run reports. The program offers a one stop places to access student alerts, attendance, and any other imperative information one might need. Cons As a new teacher, I found Powerschool difficult to figure out at first. There are a number of options that are available but that I do not know how to truly utilize. The laptop has all the student information and apps needed for e-learning, tracking, and teacher-parent communication. This software and login information was taught before taking the laptop home. I can find attendance and monitor his grades so I know when he may try to fib when I ask about his grades/test scores. Homework assignments are available also, I try to help as much as I can with those. If I am stuck, I contact his teacher. I check daily for her comments. Pros Taking attendance was easy and you could print reports which was handy to look at. Entering grades wasn't too hard to do. Cons Often the program wouldn't be working. There needed to be easier ways to enter some grades and percentages and printing reports was kind of complicated and not super user friendly. It provides a central area for us to view and input information. Pros I like how PowerSchool allows teachers to view a students' information all in one place. We are also able to take attendance and view our gradebook in one place. Cons Sometimes it can be difficult to find certain information. It is not the most user friendly and could use some updates. May 23, 2019 5.0 Pros I have used this software for years to keep up with my children's attendance and grades. This software is an excellent resource for parents. I considered myself lucky that our local school system makes this available to all students and parents! Pros As a first year teacher, Power school has made my fear of grading so much easier for me. Inputting grades, adding and editing standards, making lists of class grades, student information such as emails are easily accessible, and so much more. When I was still in school to become a teacher, they used and showed us different programs, but Power school is the most efficient program I have used yet. I am a parent as well so I can see the student side and I love that it constantly updates with comments and attendance. Cons The only con is that it can sometimes freeze or take too long to load, making me lose my place with grading. Review Source BL Brittany L. Other than the first week or so after new updates, I have not had any issues with the software. Pros I love the ease of this software. It makes taking attendance, keeping track of grades and printing reports easy. With the gradecam, I have the ability to input grade with a simple click of a key. I do not have to worry about manually entering data (all though at times I have to) and there being a grade error. This feature and integration makes it very easy. Cons What I like least about using Powerschool is that at times it can get a bit difficult to find certain things. Powerschool has a lot of features and with that comes difficulties of having to search for specifics.
