CEO and Principal Consultant Professional Training & Coaching Used the software for: 2+ years ### "Works pretty well but prefer Microsoft Teams" January 1, 2026 4.0 It works as quick communication, but I find that it doesn't do its intended job because sometimes I do not even know if I have received a message, unless I get an email notification telling me that there is a message I need to respond to. Pros It is easy to chat with others as well as hop on a quick video call without there being too much human error (or for people without much computer experience). It's easy to copy and paste photos from snips to share quick info. I would say I like the video feature the best - you just send a video link by pressing a button and then you can video talk immedately on Google Meet. Cons The notifications of chat are not enough - most time I do not even know if I received a Google chat notification. I do get emails from it, but with chat, you typically want to know immediately. I prefer Microsoft Teams Chat. I would recommend that Google make the message pop up in a better location or maybe a different noise so I know I received a chat. It’s a simple, reliable communication tool that works well within Google Workspace. While it lacks some advanced features, it’s effective for quick messaging and team collaboration. Pros What I liked most about Google Chat is how simple and efficient it is for team communication. It integrates seamlessly with Google Workspace, making messaging, file sharing, and collaboration fast and easy in one platform. Cons What I liked least about Google Chat is that it feels more basic compared to other messaging platforms, with fewer advanced features for large team organization and workflow management. August 18, 2026 4.0 Really positive overall- it provides a simple chat tool all teams can use. It's intuitive, and comes at no additional cost to you if you already use gmail as a business. Pros Great value for money- it's already integrated in to Gmail so you don't need to spend any time integrating it or any additional funding to use it. It's also super-easy to use as a way to contact colleagues more quickly (alongside email) as it is all integrated in to the gmail workspace anyway. The layout is clean and simple so anyone could use it realistically. The newer AI features are good for recapping conversations quickly if you have a lot going on at a given time or for longer chats. Cons It doesn't really have much in the way of customisation, it works great as a simple tool but if you have aspirations to integrate it with other tech or set up custom workflows etc. You can also get lost in and amongst emails as it sits in gmail, in and amongst your emailing etc... Functionality is also easy to use. Cons Too many notifications would be my biggest compliant. I'm a gmail user and I tended to get an email and a google chat when there was tagged activity. It makes team communication efficient by keeping messages, files, and tasks organized in one place. I also appreciate the ability to create dedicated spaces for projects and collaborate in real time. Cons The least thing I like about Goolge Chat is that the chat history disappears if you close out of your windows after 24 hours. But I just never close my windows to avoid that. Being able to access it directly alongside gmail is useful. I like the admin controls. The aesthetic design could be better and the threads are very confusing to use. Pros There’s good options for organizations to establish admins— who can and can’t message in the chat. It can be set up to save all conversations, which is very useful for organizations. Cons I dislike the double notifications from gmail and google chat. If you have a chat notification, it also shows up in the Gmail app. I like the website versions being merged but not the apps. I think it's a great method for employees to communicate with each other. It's already connected to your email so using the Google ecosystem would be beneficial, especially because it's free. Pros What I like the most about Google chat is the push notifications on my laptop and the fact that I can search my messages to find specific conversations I am looking for. I also like that it's a free service especially because it's so useful. I also like that big documents you send its in a separate Google Drive chat which makes it easy to find what you're looking for. Cons I don't really have anything I don't like about it. I wouldn’t personally choose it over Teams, but where clients use it, it causes no trouble and I enjoy working within it. Pros I work with organisations that make use of the Google Suite of tools, and therefore make use of google chat to work with them for instant messaging. Google Chat works great. It’s simple to use for messaging and video calls, provided a web based interface that’s useful when you’re not using the desktop or Mobile app, and functions flawlessly. It’s free, so value is exceptional. Notifications work well, document sharing works well, and whilst it wouldn’t be my first choice over MS Teams, it doesn’t come with any major issues or reasons not to use it. Cons Two things: 1) I dislike the “quote in new thread feature”. I see why others may find it useful, but it’s not for me. 2) in the full interface it feels clumsy when you want to start a new chat with a new person. Just GUI refinement required. I use it daily and have messages with a few coworkers, or just messages with one coworker. I like that you can reference all of the past conversations, if needed and I really like that you can drag and drop documents directly in the chat. You can have different spaces for certain topics and always go back in to reference them. I also really like that there is a separate tab for each conversation that you can see all documents/pictures/etc shared with that person/group. Pros I use Google Chat daily. It's so nice to be able to reference any past conversations, able to send documents easily, and have group messages or just a message to one person.
