Spectrum is providing our company with valuable job cost information. As we become more familiar with the software we will be able to use even more of it's power. There is concern since the ownership has changed hands twice in the last eighteen months.

Pros

The layout of the screens is very user friendly and the "think ahead" function makes working in the system very easy.

Cons

The report writing is not as functional as it could be. It would be nice if reports could be exported to Excel easier.

The thing that I like most about the software is that it is generally easy to use. There are a lot of places to go if you can't figure something out.

Cons

The cons of this software is the customer help. We have been charged to get something fixed that was Spectrum's fault.

Pros

It's functionality. The system is easy to use and navigate through once you have an understanding of it's functions.

Cons

I don't like that I cannot correct mistakes that are, in my eyes, minimal. For example, and I've done this more than once, if I set up a job an invert the job number. I can't go back and revise it, I have to start all over again with the correct number. I believe that a permissions issue, but it should be a corrective issue at entry and it's an administrator fix only.

Regular updates and added features, Dexter Chaney Network is awesome (I mean, who doesn't like earning rewards points for learning about your work software?!)

Cons

I wish the Project Management module had more to offer. Also, some of the workflow items are clunky.

Cons

Once you make changes inside the spectrum codes, it's very hard to keep track of the budget.

I am with Christenson Electric, Inc. in Portland, Oregon. We are not unique, just a typical electrical subcontractor. We converted from Bidtek to Forefront/Spectrum back in October of 2004. Overall, I love the ability to transport documents from reports in Spectrum to excel or word documents. For the most part, the system is very easy to use. I believe we are in version 13, although I don't maintain the IT support. I wish there was some kind of a home button so you didn't have to enter "F3" five or six times, depending on what you are viewing. Also, bringing up crystal reports does take a little more time than we would prefer since everyone is always in a hurry. Once you understand the processes they run rather quickly. It took some longer than others to get up and going. Customer Support for Spectrum is great. I never run across anyone not 100% trying to help you. When you type in wrong information or try to fly thru the system, I wish there was a quicker way to get back to where you were, instead of the system trying to look through everything. We have too many users doing the same functions at times which causes hang ups but we have learned to deal with that.

Pros

The ability to attach various files as backup to each JE , AR, AP or pretty much any transaction.

Cons

Not very financial reporting friendly. Not very accounting friendly. Way too cumbersome to find the GL accounts a transaction impacts. If I want to find the debit and credit of any transaction, I should not have to go through so many processes and filtering just to find it.

Pros

It is user-friendly (quite easy to use and to train others to use). There are constant updates (service paks) that keep the product current. There is always something new that enhances existing modules. If we ever have problems, they are addressed quickly.

Cons

The HR module is lacking in many ways. We run many HR functions outside Spectrum (spreadsheets, files, etc). User securities could be improved on (ease of setup).

I've used several accounting software programs since 1986 and studied software design - authoring code for various applications. The Spectrum product has a number of design problems and lack of features for HR and PR functions. There are many glitches necessitating "work arounds" and a number of reports or reporting options are missing from the selection. The ability to correct within a payroll run is very limited and causes two problems- if the set up is not 100% correct after payroll processing is initiated, there is no way to correct bad entries for add-ons and deductions. Also, correcting in Time Entry can cause the dollar amounts for add ons to disappear at check run time. I've also noticed in the Payables and Receivables a lack of functionality when accessing job or company information. Customer service can be condescending and not focused on the problem, but on solving a "user problem" instead of the root problem; creating more loss of time and increasing inefficiency in using the product. The product is not one that I would recommend for HR and PR. It is cumbersome and inelegant.

The Service Contract module is not user-friendly. Calls to support have resulted in more research needed on their part to get the answers we need to use the module.

Pros

I appreciate the ease of moving from module to module. You definitely need to know Accounting to use the financial modules.

Cons

Every module is an additional cost & additional cost for training/support. Although, the support team is very responsive.

Pros

GL and Job Cost balance and are accurate. Audit logs are solid and transactions are traceable. Ability to export to Excel is nice.

Cons

Where to start??? There are dozens of ways this software requires 2x-5x as many clicks of a mouse as it used to require to get the same functions completed. Version 14 is a step backward in most regards from an user-efficiency standpoint.

I have been using Spectrum for many years, even back to when the program was called Forefront. I am an office manager for an aggregate supplier, so we have used Spectrum to fill our need for an accounting software that can manage our ticket data from our scale software, track job costs and handle a somewhat complex GL chart of accounts. For the most part, we have been pleased with Spectrum. The functionality of the software is good and it is capable of doing much more than we use it for. We have recently upgraded to a new version that allows for a bit more functionality; once we get over the growing pains of change, I think we will really appreciate the options in the new version. My one complaint is that one of the modules we use (materials management) was not ready to be launched in the upgrade version in my opinion. There are several kinks that have not been ironed out yet, and the support staff is not quite ready for the problems the developers created in the new version. I have not had significant problems in any of the other modules that we use.

There was a pretty decent learning curve for use. It took a little while to get everyone on track for use but it is going a lot better

Pros

This product offers plenty of customization capability and provide any type of user a unique working experience. Its full featured reporting and document management offers a great piece of mind. The application, with little customization, can support a wide variety of industries. The multi-company support capability offers a solution that can grow as you do.

Cons

The dashboard has some limitations and the configuration can take some time depending on information you need. Deployment of bug fixes often results in the introduction of new issue that may take a little time to get resolved after the patch was applied. The add-on can drive up the cost quickly
