### "The Depth of Spectrum"

March 24, 2026

4.0

Overall, Spectrum is a very good software. We just feel there are areas there could be improvement. Spectrum is vast and has so much potential.

Pros

I like the depth and detail of Spectrum. For example, most software does not separate jobs and work orders or at least to the extent of Spectrum and it keeps things so much more organized and efficient. I also handled lots of payables during my time using Spectrum, and I feel overall accounting wise it is very beneficial and makes invoicing easy and it's easy to see what we need to research in open payables. We've never had any security issues which is a plus and the format and design of Spectrum is very appealing while working.

Cons

One of our company's biggest grievances with Spectrum is that the customer support is not the greatest. Not sure if this is due to the volume of customer's or what, but there have been times where we are told we are the only customer to ever have an issue we've had and are not able to offer much insight. Another thing I don't particularly like is how expensive Spectrum is especially to add additional modules. When adding additional modules there isn't much help as far as set up as well. We usually have already completed or have the knowledge offer in training for new modules, but it's like the training never goes more in depth and we are left to figure the rest out AND we had to pay for the training for the expensive module we just purchased.

### "I would NEVER reccomend this program"

April 2, 2026

2.0

The amount of money our company has sunk into this system is sickening. We even had to hire a new admin assistant because of the inefficiencies we experience daily. Overall, I would recommend finding a new program for accounting. Save money and sanity at the same time!

Pros

While there's not much to like about this program, I do like that images can accompany entries. I also feel that this program could reach its potential if the Spectrum team would listen to their users and take their feedback.

Cons

I find this program is not user-friendly in the least; there is no room for human error, which is frustrating on a daily basis. The fact that there are no adjustments or deletions of invoices after they are "posted" is beyond infuriating. When raised in other posts, concerns are dismissed, and you are told it's for a paper trail. Other accounting programs are more forgiving and user-friendly. There are many ways the program could still be secure and maintain accountability by granting certain people within the organization the authority to perform specific tasks. I leave work most days feeling defeated and drained. One task that should take 1-2 minutes ends up taking 10 min due to reversals and re-entering. When paying vendors, instead of paying within the vendor, you are forced to another generic screen and enter all pertinent information again to enter the payment. Again, time consuming and frusterating.

### "Viewpoint Spectrum Accounting Software - adequate but outdated"

March 27, 2026

3.0

It is an adequate software with some good and some bad features. Support was great when I started here 10 years ago, very personal and hands on. That is not necessarily the case now. Reporting has always been lacking in many areas, especially payroll and accounts payable. Even with option of pulling your own reports using queries, it's very difficult to determine where to find the relevant data and sometimes the relevant data isn't even part of the system.

Pros

It's adequate for basic job cost accounting. Menus are fairly easy to navigate and most data entry tasks are straightforward.

Cons

We consider Viewpoint Spectrum as our document storage repository as it has a good document imaging 'cabinet' system that is very customizable to fit our needs. However, recently the images have degraded substantially, to the point that some are unreadable, even when exported out of the software. Support has not been very helpful with this issue, basically stating that reports downloaded from the software have to be saved as 'flattened' images and then re-uploaded to Spectrum, which doesn't always correct the issue. Not the kind of answer we are looking for! Also, when what we believe to be simple enhancements are shot down because the original coding that the software is built on can't be updated, it's very disheartening. This should be a red flag to anyone thinking of starting with this software now.

### "Spectrum is FAST"

March 24, 2026

5.0

Overall I would definitely recommend Spectrum to other companies, the ease of use and speed is amazing!

Pros

I love the speed and the access that Spectrum offers. It is a system that offers ease and swiftness for all. I love the access that it gives to a PM - you can see everything down to the check # and date that was sent to a vendor or subcontractors, it will even tell you if their check has cleared.

Cons

Well the thing I like the least is the speed of their customer support, it isn't horrible but it just isn't as good as it used to be.

### "Relatively Positive"

April 2, 2026

4.0

My experience has been relatively positive from the system implementation point of view. However, I do recognize challenges of our end users.

Pros

Job Cost. This module is the most robust of the modules. The thought given to building it out is obvious. The job analysis page is very useful. The AIA billing functionality is impressive

Cons

Controls lacking. Would like to see more robust control features regarding turning off user access. Some of the terminology and naming convention could better aligned with common terminology in accounting and construction. for instance, the WIP report, Reports, cost codes, use alternative names in Spectrum. The reasoning has never been really clear. It does cause users to stumble when adopting Spectrum as a new ERP. Customer Support often takes a week to address support tickets. TC1 could work better. I do not understand why I would still need to enter a passkey after entering my password. This is redundant and annoying.

### "Payroll Review of Spectrum"

April 2, 2026

4.0

Overall I think Spectrum is a good accounting system, I appreciate the ease of use and all of the training available.

Pros

I think Spectrum is easy to learn and I like the steps to help in processing payroll. I like that there are a lot of learning modules to help with using Spectrum. I appreciate the year end processing webinars, they are a great refresher for those once a year procedures.

Cons

I do not like the reports, I would like there to be options to create and save custom reports with only the information you need. This would be especially helpful when creating files to upload to the various tax and unemployment/ worker's comp entities. I am not a fan of the tax override screen, it can be a bit confusing it caused me to withhold only the extra amount because I entered it incorrectly.

### "Consistent Construction Accounting"

March 25, 2026

5.0

Been working with Spectrum over 10 years. I love that they have kept up with the technology and the system is still comparable to other available solutions.

Pros

What I like most about Spectrum is the consistency across the system. Whether working in A/R, A/P, Payroll or Inventory the system is consistent and accessing the data is easily understandable.

Cons

The hosting environment. I'm old school and prefer to host our system in-house. Also, there is a standard report that pulls bad data.

### "Great Functionality with Integration Options"

August 13, 2025

5.0

Overall I like Spectrums ability to integrate with other software and ability to import or export data with the use of SDX and API.

Pros

Spectrum has grown in its ability to be integrated with other software to increase its functionality.

Cons

There are a lot of steps to complete a transaction. Also Spectrum user interface has not changed since Windows 95. There are lots of little items that are still there from its legacy days.

### "Payroll/HR views"

April 2, 2026

4.0

I have used Spectrum in a previous job (back in 2007) and the company I have been with is now almost live. I feel quite a few good changes have been made since then.

Pros

Being on the HR/Payroll side, we like the reporting ability for the ever changing requirements with all the different types of construction jobs.

Cons

We wish there was more on the HR side. With it not having a robust HR side, we wish that it was easier to collect information to make the connection to Arcoro and/or a two way API.

### "Viewpoint Spectrum: Intuitive and Compliant"

July 8, 2025

5.0

We use many of Viewpoint Spectrum's modules: AP, AR, GL, HR, Job Cost, PR and we do extensive reporting. We have a lot of audit requirements. Viewpoint Spectrum makes it reasonably easy to provide all of the required documentation.

Pros

Viewpoint Spectrum is intuitive and easy to use. The ability to limit user access keeps complexity in check. It is set up to accommodate a variety of internal controls and the segregation of duties. We have a complicated organization of companies, and Viewpoint Spectrum allows applicable users to access various companies with ease.

Cons

I wish it listed GL account numbers on the Job Cost reports. Otherwise, I really have no complaints.

Pros

### "Our perspective"

July 14, 2023

4.0

The implementation of the software was frustrating at best. High costs to get basic training to implement the software that should have been included in the purchase price. The Service Tech application has been nothing but aggravating. Notes are lost, labor hours are lost. It has taken months to get the app working correctly, but still issues arise which cause payroll issues. Running payroll is over complicated and the minimal training we have received was not efficient to learn it properly. Now that things are settled, and our data is all inputted to Spectrum, we are running a lot smoother. The staff that uses the software is trained to be able to use 75% of the software. There are many features we do not use due to lack of training and the features not being user friendly or at an additional cost. On the positive side, invoices are going out smoothly, posting AP, payments, and cash receipts are going well.

Pros

The ease of invoicing. AP invoices are instantly attached to a job or work order and the labor and notes carry over from the Service Tech App. It's nice to have all the charges already ready to be reviewed and invoiced. We do appreciate the real-time availability of the data. We can leave one site map open with data already entered and then we can open a new site map to add or change information. This allows us to not have to delete and start over on the original site map. We like the ability to be able to attach documents.

Cons

The implementation of the software was frustrating at best. High costs to get basic training to implement the software. The Service Tech application has been nothing but aggravating. Notes are lost, labor hours are lost. It has taken months to get the app working correctly, but still issues arise which cause payroll issues. Access to the work order/reports/labor report is terrible. Once the data is pulled to payroll it is not possible to pull the technician's time. There is no other report we can pull to send the guys to verify their hours.

Reason for choosing Viewpoint Spectrum

Recommended by the electrical industry as the standard software.

### "General Usage of Spectrum for Construction"

July 25, 2023

2.0

Its okay, but hard to get things accomplished some times. Too many stiff programs, not workable like excel spreadsheets are. I worked with Deltek products for Engineering and they're product for building jobs was Excel based and was easy to maneuver around so you were able to copy things and place them where you wanted them to be. It was like you had the whole job/report in front of you at once and could place things where you wanted them to be instead of putting in a transaction and finding out afterwards where it sits or how it looks by running a report. To set up a job with cost codes, etc in Spectrum is a bit scary if your not used to it. Once you do some things in the setup, it cannot be changed, or easily changed. It feels like a big production if its a big job with a lot of phase codes and a lot of moving parts. if it was as easy to create as an excel spreadsheet, it wouldn't be so hard and not as scary, then you wouldn't feel like your going to really screw it up.

Pros

I had no choice in using Spectrum for this company and do not know about other programs for construction other than Sage products.

Cons

I do not like the fact that you can't drill down from reports to get information without having to open up another tab to go searching for the info your requiring. Sage 50 was wonderful in that respect. You could find exactly why a number was appearing on the report and where it came from or why it was there. Many errors were caught that way and were able to be changed before they began to snowball.

### "Accounting nightmare"

July 12, 2023

1.0

Started at this company, where the system was set up incorrectly, and not a single module could pull proper reports due to the set up. I had paid for trainings that end up without being fully trained on the modules because the set up was so wrong it did not function and the spectrum accounting processes could not function and be completed. 6 months in, and over 15,000.00 in additional trainings and partial audit of our system and still cannot complete period end process, quarter end process, or be fully trained to a properly working system. Every time I contact support, I get a response of \[sensitive content hidden\]. Support just directs you to the "help" files which I have already read through and they don't help, which is why I contacted them.. Tickets are also closed before a resolution.I have been trying to fix mistakes and correct the past 2 years of accounting errors and spectrum is not user friendly when errors are made that need to be corrected. You also cannot just call the past the past and move on with a fresh start for a new year, since all the reporting ties together. You have to go back and try to find every single issue (which I stated before spectrum doesn't easily let you research and find errors, especially when you are not exactly sure how the system was set up and changed multiple times in the past)

Pros

Haven't found any pros of the system compared to other systems used.

Cons

Highly dislike all accounting functions as it is not user friendly and you have to do 10x more clicks and entries just to do one simple task. Cannot find reports easily, and cannot just search a transaction, or do a quick look up for something within the entire system. You have to physically do way more work and go through every single module to find what you are looking for, then typically it has vanished and not there.. Spent 8 hours trying to find one simple discrepancy and with help from the trainer, still cannot find the error. The system is not efficient and wastes company time and money.

Reason for choosing Viewpoint Spectrum

Empty broken promises from \[sensitive content hidden\] who was actually our trainer and who set up our system. If what happened to us continues to happen as is will since he is still a 3rd party trainer promoting your company, there will be many more bad reviews coming your way.

### "Foundation Constructors, Inc. Review"

July 13, 2023

4.0

Our initial set up did not go smoothly at all and we were very unhappy. Once we got things set up correctly for our use, we really like it. We are familiar with the data entry, reporting and more advanced options now and it works great for us! Now that we are set up and have some custom reports, things are good!

Pros

Once things were set up properly for us, it is fairly easy to use. Running reports is easy and the job costing works well for us.

Cons

Customer service is terrible! Response time is slow and the help feature doesn't provide much guidance. I used the help feature more often in the past but, after one of the recent updates, it doesn't help me much at all. The other "Con" would be custom reports. We were surprised by how many reports we needed to customize for every day information.

### "Pros and Cons"

July 24, 2023

4.0

Rough beginning, but we learned a lot and still are learning. It is a detailed system that requires dedication to learn and to use. If you don't plan to spend enough time and resources to roll it out, it's going to be a difficult time. However, the more we learned about it the more we liked it. It will do what you tell it, but you have to learn how to do that. Definitely challenging, but stay the course and commit to constant improvement and you will be successful.

Pros

Spectrum really does a great job tracking job costs, and when the system is used properly does anything we need it to and then some in relation to jobs. Helps us organize everything and has some great job cost reports built in. Also appreciate the ease of importing data.

Cons

Crystal reports are not ideal, no easy flexibility with report editing, bare minimum financial reports included, clunky processes to post transactions to GL and antiquated feeling user interface. And it's a small thing, but there are several fields that are way too short. Probably a fourth of our vendors have names that don't completely print on the checks. Also don't like the CONSTANT push to purchase add on products.

A great tool for job management, compared to other more expensive software. I do like the PO reporting allot.

Pros

Entering New Jobs, and creating Purchase Orders are very easy, once you understand the methods.

Cons

### "Viewpoint Spectrum will bankrupt your company"

March 15, 2023

2.0

I never made it through implementation. Our "consultant" was constantly rescheduling, unavailable, on a trip to some other state. The "project managers" love to schedule useless meetings at a rate of $250 an hour. You will be required to buy "Crystal Reports" to make your own invoice templates or have the consultant do it at $250 an hour. This wasn't disclosed to us. The implementation was extremely difficult. The modules are very hard to use and have way too many features that are not used. Tax deductions in payroll were not correct after several attempts to get them correct. The answer was always to update the payroll deductions file which you also have to do manually. When I asked to end the contract after 2 years even though we signed for 3 because it wasn't working out they said "Too bad" and sent us to collections for a third year of use even though we never even got up and running on the project. A $60 to $80K mistake for our company that is now struggling to make payroll because of it. Highly recommend NOT using Viewpoint Spectrum.

Pros

Not a Lot. It was hard to use, expensive, hard to implement. Customer service is none existent during implementation and otherwise.

Cons

Expensive, Hard to use, doesn't eliminate other programs because their modules aren't that great in some cases.

Reason for choosing Viewpoint Spectrum

I made a huge mistake

Our business has two divisions - Commercial Construction and Service Maintenance. We’re based in Pennsylvania and have been operating for about 28 years. The computer system we had been using prior to switching to Dexter + Chaney was outdated for our uses. After carefully reviewing all the options, Dexter + Chaney was high on our list. One of the main functions we were looking for was something that would tie together both divisions of our company. We liked what the sales team told us about the software, and it seemed to better suit our needs than the system we had. We were told it had modules that would make it possible to tie in both of our divisions, with great customer support, reports that were easy to use, and to meet all of our needs, etc. We started with Dexter + Chaney in 2005 (about 8 years ago), having high hopes that Spectrum (or Forefront as it was called at that point) could perform all the functions we were looking for, and more. We spent several months preparing for the change over/familiarizing ourselves with the screens/and inputting information. Every Vendor/Employee/Client had to be reentered manually, which was very monotonous, but relatively simple. Some of the modules were similar to the program we had used prior, but others were more difficult and required calls to support. It took us several months to feel comfortable using Forefront, and probably a year+ until we felt like we really had a decent grasp of it. Since we’re a smaller business, we have the ability to notice problems with reports/programs more easily than a company with hundreds of employees. After we went live with Dexter Chaney we came across several issues, but attributed most of them to new user errors. As we have become more and more confidence with Spectrum, we have found several major bugs in the system that were unknown to Dexter + Chaney, or they had thought were resolved. On a few of these occasions, we had to really push for them to investigate and resolve the issues. One of the biggest problems we’ve seen is that the new Versions seem to be released before they are thoroughly checked, and there are repeat problems. We have received some good, and some lacking, customer support. There are several really knowledgeable reps who have helped us through our problems quickly. We have also spoken to other reps and management in support that have been very difficult, ignoring our concerns and refusing to listen or respond to our calls/emails. At one point, we were not getting updates on a problem and logged onto their website to see if anything new was posted for our issue. We didn’t get an answer, but instead found a string of emails they had accidentally posted, making it clear that our problem wasn’t being taken seriously on their end. Something as simple as calling in to support has proven to be a hassle since Dexter + Chaney only allows 3 people on the contact list, and we have 6 regular users. Some of the programs cannot be used to the full extent of what they are shown. Example: Payroll is set up so you can do multiple check sequences in one pay run for an employee. The problem is that it’s not set up to calculate the correct taxes/deductions if you do this. If they are paying a tax/deduction that reaches the limit in the first check, it will also be taken out of the second check, and there’s a possibility for the reports to be wrong. We purchased the Infolink module a few years ago to help us write reports in Excel using Database Query. We were told by the sales team that it would be easy to use and we could create reports with the exact information we wanted. The training we received on it barely covered the basics. It’s far from easy to use, and many of the reports that come up cannot pull the requested information. Overall, I would say Dexter Chaney is average at best. We are able to use Spectrum for most functions, but not as easily as we were promised. Support in general is lacking, as is our confidence in the product any time there is an upgrade. It’s not as good as we were led to believe.

### "Viewpoint Spectrum Assessment"

August 18, 2022

4.0

Overall we have very few problems and almost no downtime. Our employees can access the system from any internet connection which has saved us during hurricanes, covid and such. We have never missed a payroll even during those times. It is easy to use and our employees are able to get their jobs done as needed relatively efficiently. It has open APis for pushing data in and pulling data out. They are focused on improvements to make the overall job of construction from the field, PM level and back office better and run more efficiently.

Pros

The product is mostly user friendly so it's easy to train new employees. single entry that feeds all the pertinent modules is key. The linking of the documents to transactions and then being able to see them throughout the modules is awesome and has saved time in the support functions to not have to pull copies of documents for others that need to see it. Also, the menu that allows you to jump from one thing to another on the same project without having to reselect the project number in a new screen is great. The ability to setup template views for inquiry screens and reports is nice as well for having consistency throughout the company. They are also very end user oriented. There are advisory boards to discuss possible changes to the system that allow users to give feedback. They have a campaign now where they are having meetings with clients to discuss new programming possibilities and get feedback on proposed look and feel. They initiate surveys, have an enhancement request panel and have a on-line network environment where customers can pose questions to others using the product for help and ideas.

Cons

There is no option to post in detail to the GL in some of the modules and some transactions, even though coded to a job, do not show the job number on the GL side. The job cost transactions do not show the GL codes on the transactions. Therefore, it can be difficult at time to reconcile things between the job and GL. Also, even though the JC transactions pushes to the T&M module, there is not a direct unique link between the two so trying to create reports that have the cost and revenue associated can be tricky and is not always exact. There is an issue between how committed cost is handle for the purchase orders versus the subcontracts that can cause you reports to be out so you really have to understand this when viewing the job cost reports. Would like the ability for security to be able to have some more granular controls on what users are allowed to see. For example, you may want to allow the purchasing agent to run job cost reports to check non-labor activity but you do not want them to be able to see any labor costs. You can't do that right now. So then you have to create custom reports to separate the cost types and give them access to only those custom reports. Overall security needs to be revamped to a more true role based model. It can be challenging in setting users for rights within a module and keep segregation of duties in place.

Reason for choosing Viewpoint Spectrum

The customer focused environment. The document tracking within the system. The ability to handle our needs overall.

We have not had a great experience with Spectrum from the initial sale, where we were told its capabilities in multi-company interchange, and found out it was untrue, and wanted us to pay a huge amount for this capability. Technical support is terrible where you have to sometimes wait for weeks to get an answer. I don't know when the last time I got an answer the same day, but with our other software we do.

Pros

The import data feature utilizing Excel is a really good system. It does what an ERP system should do, so it gets the job done, not the most efficient but it works.

Cons

This system is very click heavy and not streamlined. You have to click multiple times to get anything done, even though there is not reason to have to have extra clicks. Screen displays from on area are not consistent in another (some you enter up front info to see the input/edit screen, others the input/edit is displayed and is allowable when you enter the required information). It is not always intuitive for each module on where to go to get the information you are looking for. Many of the standard reports are really not helpful or complete as our last ERP system. Payroll Tax reports for state and federal requirements are not available unless you pay for custom reports at a very high premium rate. If you write reports using Crystal Reports or SQL, trying to find the correct fields and tables are difficult at best, I spend a lot of time in trial and error trying to find the right table and fields, other ERP systems I have used have an option that you can hover over any field in the display to see the table and field used. Not every table has an option to import changed data into the system, if something was entered/imported incorrectly (for instance they use a 2 digit year for equipment model year, upon import if you used a 4 digit year, they do not fail the import or warn you, they take the first 2-digits of the year, and after the fact you cannot modify the data except by hand). There are quite a few tables like this that you cannot change after the fact.

### "Spectrum by Viewpoint"

4.0

Pros

The Job Costing/Tracking abilities are great!

Cons

The Project Managers do not know how to use the software and are not interested in learning as it spins them out trying to follow all of the different reports/areas I need to pull up just to find a couple of numbers.

Reason for choosing Viewpoint Spectrum

Finance and Project Management agreed on this one as Viewpoint has TEAM for the project managing side which syncs well with Spectrum.

### "Spectrum is a versatile and dynamic ERP system"

August 18, 2022

5.0

Pros

The features that I find most impactful is the ability to not only use "canned" reports but to customize reports to our needs. Real-time information all day, all the time. Being cloud based means that everyone on Construction management has real-time data of the same information, whether in the field or in the office and everyone can communicate using this real-time data. This allows for trouble-shooting and prevention of overruns more efficiently. Field management with mobile users allows for the most current project information to be uploaded into Spectrum at any moment. This ability to have current information at any time allows for better analytics.

Cons

Being able to do comparative reports over years. There are no reports that allow for jobs or financials to be viewed and compared over multiple years. Also, being able to pull customer historical data over 3 - 5 year period for Projects and various Industries worked in for bids.
