I started at Kuhn Construction last May. I had some training from the previous accountant, but basically just researched to find out how to do different tasks that she didn't go over. I'm still learning and in my downtime, I do the online training that is free.

Pros

Spectrum is pretty easy to use and figure out how to use different aspects. The online help and group interaction helps tremendously when trying to figure out a task.

Cons

The classes are kind of pricey. As a contractor that only works at this location for 3 days a week (not in a row), it makes it hard to take any of the classes as I have other clients I work for when I'm not here.

Pros

Disappointing Support, functionality. Trimble one is glitchy for logins, have to do work around to gain access.

Cons

Support, and the lack their of. It's pricey I wish they'd fix the bugs.

Reason for choosing Viewpoint Spectrum

Legacy, holdover from Dexter Cheney days.

As mentioned in previous responses the overall system is fairly stable but can be hugely problematic to get even small issues resolved if you have to go to support.

Pros

The product is fairly easy to use once set up and I like that you are able to access most data via the database for reporting.

Cons

By far the worst area of this product is their support. Years ago it was fantastic and like many other companies, as it has been acquired by larger and larger firms they provide less and less value via support. In most instances I am unable to even speak with a support rep on my first attempt, I am instead added to a call list and regularly do not receive a response sooner than a week even on cases that have been "escalated" or marked as critical.

Implementation was not good; thus, software was not used for very long. Now that we are trying again, guides and help seems to be bit lacking. Support just assumes that we are well aware of program and gives a higher-level information. Still glitches as the new technology are being introduced and incorporated ( AP Auto invoicing)

Pros

Integration with Spectrum and pulling data makes it so easy to work with. The dashboards and UI is much sleeker than Spectrum. Service Tech App and process made life easier for our users. Better visibility into job status and manage projects better.

Cons

Slowness in data pulling, user roles are canned and very less room for changing or new role creation. Spectrum BI tool is very limited and does not actually serve much purpose.

Reason for choosing Viewpoint Spectrum

The product was a package we bought with Spectrum and did not use initially. Now we started implementing it and users seem to like it / prefer it over entering data in Spectrum. Having systems talk to each other make it easier to navigate.

Accounts Payable is super easy to use. job budgeting is perfect.

Cons

Mistakes can be difficult to narrow down. User stamps would be useful to track who is making errors so training can be done.

It has some great features that I use in Teams the accounting side I review reports you need feedback from AP/AR on that side.

Cons

The reliability has been and on going issue that needs to be addressed. And there are specific things like not being able to copy and paste and email address to new contacts is very annoying.

The system sucks right now for us as we are not using the full function from timekeeping to invoicing simply because this is not the system we can use to capture time in the field for our guys. The system is not easy to navigate - too much data entry that I almost lost my arm and shoulder invoicing 50 lines daily for our customers. It does not have the capability to do recurring invoices to capture the line item charges. It made our old ERP look the best ever there is. Implementation was poorly executed. There was no clear answers to my questions and no clear example on how it should be done for my customers. I needed to navigate on my own. The "trainer" doesn't understand how our business operates despite the fact that I have submitted a flow chart of our process and sample documents. NO follow up was made. NO support was avaiable.

Pros

The promised capability that this system do project management like track assets, cost and margins. I have yet to see if it will actually do it.

Cons

Need to key in same information over and over again specifically the job number I was working on and the batch code. I keyed in the job number and it kept asking me the same info every time a new tab opens until I finish my invoices.

We use Spectrum on a daily basis for our accounting/project management software. Once the reports are honed to what you need and you learn where everything is, it takes care of everything we need it to.

Pros

Very powerful for tracking projects and integrating accounting. Lots of features, many more than I will ever actually use, but it can do just about anything you need it to.

Cons

Definitely a learning curve and takes time to find how/where to accomplish certain tasks.

It qives our accounting team the tools they need to provide a quick and accurate overview for our company. They are able to perform all accounting functions in one platform.

Pros

Familiar feel, rather easy to train new users. Features are simple and quick to learn. It has served our company well for numerous years.

Cons

Customer service and new features feel like that are going backwards. Takes forever to get issues solved when a few years ago it was quick

Cons

Wish we could change the top section of the Vendor Invoices like invoice number, vendor, credit/invoice before you save it. Sometimes you realize there is entry error before you would save it but you have to delete the whole entry and start over.

when mistakes are made, it has to be 'unwound' and redone, you must know what you are doing prior to performing the action as errors are time consuming to correct

The reports are not very customizable and the reports available are limited and does not have the information I need in a report.

Pros

There is an enormous amount of information available and lots of great reports to give you the data and breakdowns needed to analyze and manage projects.

Cons

Overall interface could be a bit more intuitive. Takes a little time and trial and error to get to know how to find the info you need.

I am a project accountant and have been a Spectrum user since 1996 when it was called ForeFront and this is the only construction software I've used. Overall I find the software easy to use. I've participated in training led by Spectrum trainers and their help and advise is invaluable. The ability to export data in different file types for analysis - exporting to excel file, data only is one I use regularly. We're also lucky to have an IT software support specialist with extensive Spectrum background who is able to provide SQL reports for those times when the standard reports and exports don't give us enough flexibility with the data for analysis.

Pros

Most processes in Spectrum are intuitive for the user.

Cons

As a long time user of Spectrum, we have a heavily customized Job Cost Report. It's becoming more difficult to accommodate our custom needs as new versions are released.

I like that you are able to open up multiple site map tabs and it doesn't interrupt invoice entry or entering a subcontract.

Cons

I least like that I can't adjust a cost code after the invoice entry has been updated.

The company that I joined in 2014 began using Spectrum in 1997. Over the last few years we have researched a few other accounting software platforms in means of further upgrading our department. Nothing has come as close to our needs as Spectrum. The integration between the modules is seamless and the ease of use is refreshing.

Pros

Ease of use and integration between modules! This software is very user friendly. The ability to export reports/data to excel is also wonderful and used almost daily.

Cons

We have not implemented the Project Management/Team side of Spectrum. It is constantly evolving, however our it does not quite fit our PM department needs...yet. As with all upgrades, we are continuing to watch their new innovations and hope to utilize it in the future.

Pros

Getting info into the right setup allows realtime tracking. Job costing in realtime is crucial to ontime billings.

Cons

Very tricky getting all the setups right so that data tracks in correct phases. Phases is relative to discipline.

Pros

I would say is easy to use, it has all in the box, ok for a PM software.

Cons

They need to improve some features, I would like to have a punch list section and somehow tie schedule to the software to track my cost/schedule.

Spectrum has continued to grow their products. They have a superb support department. The staff is fairly consistent with not a lot of turn-over. You get to know the people behind the scenes and build relationships with them and their network.

Pros

My favorite thing about Spectrum is that it continues to grow with our business. We have been Spectrum users for 25 years. In these 25 years Spectrum has been on the cutting edge of technology. We continue to get value from the updates and software collaborations.

Cons

My least favorite thing is it takes too long to get updates. I would like the easy updates to come out once a month. I realize this is not cost effective, but typically if there is anything I am disgruntled about it will show up in a future quarterly update.
