July 7, 2023 4.0 Some functionality has really improved over the years yet some has remained stagnant. We have 2 sisters companies in the construction business and 1 sister company that is a steel pipe distributor. Making construction software work for a steel pipe business has been a challenge. We have made it work, but would like to see more focus on OP and IC modules. The GL module needs some critical improvements, too. Pros All one package makes workflow easier. We could get this from any number of alternate software providers. What we like about Spectrum is the depth of it's functionality/capabilities. Controller Construction Used the software for: Less than 6 months ### "As a 35 year Accountant - I would not recommend this software" July 7, 2023 2.0 I just started a new position with a company that uses Spectrum and I am not happy with the program. I was not here when this system was selected or set up and waste a lot of time trying to guess at where to get information. Terms that are used for accounting tasks are not accounting terms. Your help articles are not helpful. When I submit cases for help - I get vague answers and screen shots of the help articles, not a helpful person that understands the accounting issues that I am asking. I have been a Controller for 15 years. If it was that easy - I would not be asking for your assistance. Pros The job cost abilities and progress billing functions look good. Cons The reports are not download friendly. The AP invoice dates and the month end close processes are just awful. And if there is a way to send AR invoices / billings from the system, I have not found that. But there should be. Do you have any idea how much extra time is spend downloading billings and emailing them to the customers? This system is basic and does not address current accounting guidelines and processes. July 21, 2023 5.0 Overall it has been a great experience. I have no doubt I picked the right software. It is easy to use, the trainers were knowledgeable and easy to follow. The few times I have needed Tech Support, the response was quick and the issue was resolved. It does everything we need it to do. Pros I really like the AP system. Very easy to enter data and make corrections. The support I receive from Viewpoint is very helpful. Now that the training is finished, I feel they still have my back. Also the Cash Management with being able to print MICR checks. Now we can order blank checks instead of having to order new checks for each account (53 of them). Cons My least favorite module is AR. Entering information is easy, but if you make a mistake it is hard to follow how to make the correction. Maybe it is just me, but I think it could work a little easier. Reason for choosing Viewpoint Spectrum Best value for what we received. It does the job and doesn't break the bank. The cash management and g/l needs a lot work to get into the current century. Too many tabs. Pros I like the contract status report. It is one of the best reports on the market. Cons Trial balance functionality. You can not run trial balance specific date. Can not drill down from trial balance. It is not easy to enter a journal entry. Although there are alot of templates that can be imported into the system but it is not the answer. It would be great if you could enter the journal entry in one screen . Tooo many tabs to do a simple task. Pros As a construction accounting software package Spectrum offers solutions for most of our essentials. With help from a knowledgeable consultant we've been able to to modify or create the reports we need. Cons Timesheet entry is missing mobile components and approval processes offered by third parties. Project and document management is not as robust as Procore. Scheduling for labor, tools, and equipment and comparing against estimate, budget, and actual doesn't functionally exist. We are spending a lot of time, money, and effort to research, source, purchase, and integrate third party applications. However the migration and implementation was a terrible experience. Pros Large upgrade from Procontractor, but I liked the functionality or workflow of Procontractor better. Cons How each module is separate from the general ledger, becomes a pain! We had American Contractor and ProContractor for a long time. The ProContractor migration went SO much better than the Spectrum migration and I was involved with both. Switched from [ProContractor](https://www.capterra.com/p/251833/ProContractor/) Procontractor became extremely slow for us. Reports would sometimes take 3-5 minutes for a single report. Pros The reports are laid out very professionally making them easy to understand and useful in making decisions. Cons I was not involved in the implementation of the product and, as a result, I found the initial setup of the general ledger is way too detailed for an operation of this size. Consequently, the financial statements are very much overblown with insignificant details. The management of the business could function a lot simpler with 40% less effort. Pros Features and functionalities are easy to navigate, while maintaining and keeping track of all pieces of the projects together. Training is touch for new employees because of the multiple steps and inconsistencies between modules. Ability to store documents and records is the true benefit. Pros System is purposeful and structured. Users need to understand and follow all of the steps in a process, which sometimes at the beginning seem difficult. However overtime with an increased level of understanding the system becomes the system of record. Our favourite feature in our office is decreased reliance on paper. Our AP, cash management and AR departments are all paperless! Cons Spectrum could make things earlier by having consistency between modules. There is currently inconsistently between the AP and AR modules. Consistency would be very helpful especially when learning the system. Help desk - we have incurred thousands of dollars using our implementation subcontractor to help identify fixes to issues. The help desk for months didn't answer the phone and unless your payroll wasn't being released there was no phone call back. Their sales brochure shows 'world class' support department. This non-level of service will cost you money. Reason for choosing Viewpoint Spectrum Project costing, revenue module. I have to use this piece of shite software 40 hours a week and it never fails to fill me with absolute rage. Cons I dislike just about everything about Viewpoint Spectrum. It seems like it was created in 1996 and hasn't been updated since. It lacks the most basic of features, such as MULTI SELECT. All processes take 5x as long as they should. They have a suggestions site, where they continuously mark suggestions that do NOT exist as "already exists". If they have a UX team, they must not be paying them enough. One thing I truly like is the Tech Support. \[SENSITIVE CONTENT HIDDEN\] is the best one. Besides the question I asked, he can always be proactive to provide me more info on the related items I need to know. Others are good, too. Pros User friendly. Experienced Tech Support. Listening to the customers' needs, and always growing with better function. I used Oracle before. It's very hard to use. No common sense and always have to check for error. Although we can't customize a software like Oracle JD Edwards, but it's actually better. As a user, we don't need to "design" a software. We only need a software that works and easier to use. For the most part, help is readily available when problems occur. Sometimes we need instantaneous answers and that doesn't happen Pros Overall this software is very good. Viewing and sharing documentation is relatively easy. Cons Projections need to be more easily updated. When current cost exceeds previous projections, it should be added to total projection rather than showing as a negative projected remaining cost. VP Finance Construction Used the software for: 6-12 months ### "New Spectrum User" August 23, 2022 4.0 We are still developing our processes as we are still a relatively new user, but overall we have had a very good experience with Spectrum. Pros The software was relatively easy to implement and start using after going live. There are numerous canned reports that are very helpful and it is also easy to navigate the database when creating custom reports. Cons The cost projection entry screen desperately needs to be updated. It was so cumbersome to use that we had to hire an outside consultant to build us an Excel template that interfaced with the system. Also, we allocate overhead based on a rate per manhour and this turned out to be a manual weekly process (our old software actually did this automatically). Tracking contracts and change requests are important to us and are easy to do. Payroll processing time has been reduced and AP is so much better now that the invoices are routed. Automated purchase orders are now possible too. Pros The job costing module is valuable to us for tracking the real time cost of our projects. I like the interactive menus that change depending on what features are being used. We are able to have custom reports designed. Cons I have no comments to add here, its a good program. My life will be harder and my job will be more difficult. Anytime I've asked to incorporate a feature, I've been told it can't be done and it's up to us to adjust our processes. Pros Our accounting department likes Viewpoint Spectrum. They like the all-in-one job cost integration it provides. Cons Coming from the Operations side of the business, managing contracts and change orders, Spectrum makes everything more complicated than our previous system. Everything requires completing multiple screens and moving through multiple sections. I find there is no all-in-one capability. I can't even see PO's and sub-contracts on the same screen so my PM's don't see their total job commitment at a glance. I also can't get original and revised sub contract amts for the job on one screen. Reason for choosing Viewpoint Spectrum I was not involved in the decision. They provide a lot of training options like live webinars to share information on new features, products, and industry news. Pros Spectrum has all of the features I need to process payroll and track HR related information. Being hosted on the cloud has been a reliable feature. I enjoy knowing I will be able to process my weekly payroll on time. The company pays attention to its customers when it comes to requests for new features. The software is constantly improving but the look and feel remains similar. Cons The security setup for giving supervisors access to jobs seemed a little complex. We have not set up a lot of access for our managers due to this. Since the company is always improving its features this may be one of those processes that is better now. President Construction Used the software for: 2+ years ### "Like the Product Overall but Needs Help" July 17, 2023 4.0 Yet to be seen but we have not lost hope. We however need quality help from Spectrum. Pros It works for subcontractors that bid Lump Sum and have complexity in their work. Contractors such as electrical, hvac and suppliers and installers of structural and miscellaneous steel require better accounting than many other subcontractors. Cons Initial Implementation and training has been poor and very frustrating. There have been some good experiences but overall it has been negative and not productive experiences. We own other Trimble products but no one seems to know anything about the other products Trimble sells and we own. We changes to Spectrum for it was supposed to work better than our former accounting system, Computer Ease, but that switch over has not produced the promised results. The difference in the speed of the program has greatly improved our efficiency office wide. There are great tools for our program managers to track every aspect of their projects. Pros Speed of processing. Help function is very easy to use and a great tool. Haven't had to call their help desk once. Integration from our old system was quick with minimal hiccups. Cons Only issue we are having is with getting additional invoice forms created.
