Pros This software takes the guess work out of running payroll for my domestic employee. I don't pay under the table, and the thought of figuring out the federal and state taxes, etc. on my own was really daunting. It only takes me a few minutes each pay period to run payroll and generate a pay slip. At tax time I was able to very easily generate the appropriate documents for my own filing and to provide to my employee. And you definitely can't beat the price (free)! Cons This software is definitely a bit dated, and sometimes it's a tad slow, but it gets the job done a lot faster than I could've on my own. Account set up took a bit of time, especially because as a truly free user (some tiers of users do pay a fee), I wasn't a top priority, and they were busy at the end of the quarter. However, after I provided a few forms, they did get me set up, and it's been smooth sailing ever since. Review Source DS Daniel S. Owner Information Technology and Services Used the software for: 2+ years ### "This software helps me do payroll in 15 minutes per month" August 22, 2024 5.0 I've used payroll4free since 2021 and then decided to pay a monthly fee for them to do my tax filing and deposits to the IRS, etc. all the legal stuff, I don't want to deal with. I've never had one issue, they are always on time and doing stuff correctly. The Windows software has a little learning curve, especially if you are not an accountant. But it's doable. Now it takes me literally 15 minutes a month to do payroll. I'm own a very small business (office software) with few employees. Pros It does the job. I made a user guide that I can follow every month end to do payroll. Takes me 10 minutes incl. printing checks and filing my reports. I have the service where they do my deposits and it has been done on time and correct for years now, with no exception. Support reponds fairly quickly and professionally every time I have a question. They are helpful. Cons The User Interface is outdated, but for the price I'm not going to complain. It works. All the people complaining with 1 star here are really spoiled or lazy. If you want to pay $29/month just to do the same thing that is free here, so you get a nicer interface, then go ahead, but don't complain! Administrator Facilities Services Used the software for: 2+ years ### "Payroll4free user" August 20, 2025 2.0 Pros used to be reasonably priced, just added a "surcharge" for processing more than one paycheck run per month, system locks up if you try to pay 2X per month. Cons system is glitchy, not real user friendly, keep raising prices, just added a new fee and if you don't pay it your payroll won't let you print a check even after I paid for the whole year. CFM Retail Used the software for: 6-12 months ### "Free Payroll service with ads" October 26, 2020 4.0 It solves our problem and works well enough to where we have continued to use it. A basic level payroll provider like this would usually charge a minimum of $30-40 a month and usually a per employee cost too. When I first set it up I did all of the calculations myself and compared them to the reports that it generates and they were all spot on, so I'm pretty happy with it. Pros The software really is free. The set up is simple enough. I entered in the employees, their wages, and other basic payroll info along with company info such as pay schedules and payroll dates. I love the fact that it is actually free. This software does a lot for the cost, even allows you to set up ACH for paying your employees. Cons It is a little slow. The UI/UX is a little confusing and hard to use. The reports are archaic looking and can't really be customized. There are ads but that doesn't really bother me because it is, after all, free. Head server Food & Beverages Used the software for: 6-12 months ### "Great and easy software" June 15, 2021 5.0 Payroll for free is a free payroll program for businesses that have 25 or less employees. It's been perfect at my job. We can do direct deposit and even print out checks for free. I recommend this software just small businesses out there if they want something easy. Pros Value! I used Quickbooks for many years but found the increasing annual costs to be prohibitive. Cons Program is not that intuitive and could be made to be more "user friendly". Product Marketing Manager Computer Software Used the software for: 2+ years ### "Worst software, worst company" January 29, 2019 1.0 While the software is AWFUL, the corporate team and customer support are somehow even worse. They take days (or weeks) to answer emails (if at all), and when you call to ask for help on something, they tell you to "just wait until you get emailed back." I closed my business mid-way through the year, meaning I didn't need to pay for them to process payroll any more, so I terminated payroll services. I still thought I would at least be able to go in and get my W-2s at the end of the year, since I paid for their services for half of the year, but they won't give me them and won't tell me what my other options are. I am now two days away from needing to send my W-2s to employees and they won't talk to me on the phone and I'm waiting for them to respond with unhelpful emails. This company is the worst and I would avoid them at all costs. Pros There is literally nothing good about this software. Avoid at all costs! I guess the price is on the cheap end, but you will pay for it in every other way. Cons This software was terrible every step of the way. It's not cloud-based, and there's not even a Mac version, so I literally had to buy a PC to be able to run it. I only did so because it was "Free" (turned out not to be free as the name implies). It was like logging into software from the 90s. Horribly slow, hard to use, terrible interface. I dreaded running payroll every week. I only stuck with them because our number of employees was so low. I called to try and get my records from 2018 when I used them. They told me since I cancelled my service, that I only had 6 months to get the information I needed for tax filing. Told me it was on the piece of paper I signed when I asked for the service to be stopped. Called them and was put on hold 5 times for over 15 minutes, only for them to tell me that they do not hold records after 6 months when a service is cancelled and that they purged them. Both my accountant and attorney said this is illegal and that by law if they were filing taxes for me, that they have to keep my records on file. Finally talked to the CFO and she said the same thing. But she is going to talk to technical support to see if records can be retrieved and how much it would cost. I doubt I will get a return phone call. Pros The ability to do my own payroll was the only feature I liked Cons Not exactly the easiest to navigate. Support not very good either. Long hold times. They took all our sensitive data and that was the last I heard from them. Cons They seem to just be here to collect PII data like SSN's and such. I tried to set up payroll and after 3 months gave up. They collect all your info on your employees, then ghost you. Pros The inexpensiveness of the program, if you want a simple, bare minimum program that does not have a lot of bells and whistles. This is it. Cons The learning curve of the program. If you have a "complicated" custom type pay set-up for your employees, then this is going to throw you for a loop in how you can enter it into the program so that it makes sense. Cons Rudeness and dismissiveness to my request was communicated to me, after my request for service that is timely. Reason for choosing Payroll4Free.com I will have to find another option. I think it's important to treat one's clientele respectfully.
