The people who say it is not a complete or accurate product are most likely just not as knowledgeable about tax preparation. We did some fairly complex returns to compare our previous software the Drake and Drake actually was more accurate than our former software. Drake does not however offer the same level of diagnostics and guidance for input as the other software. That is not a problem if you understand tax forms, but could be a challenge for someone who depends on the software to guide them. Pros The price and customer service. The software works so much better than prior tax preparation options we have used and it is 1/2 to 1/3 the price. Cons The software is not designed for inexperienced tax preparers. All of our staff are experienced preparers, but I would be hesitant to throw a new person into a complex return with Drake as it does not do much hand holding like many of the other more expensive platforms. You would think after buying a new company they would treat their long time customers better. Pros Over the years Drake has been a great company until 2025, when they were purchased by another company. The 2025 software had more bugs than usual and took longer for the updates to come out. But I was will to see how thinks played out. Cons I did not renew my portal when I renewed my tax software, but they charged me anyway. So, I called to cancel the portal, and they walked me through canceling everything. A day later, they called and said I can't cancel; because I agreed to automatically renew. Pros Drake Tax is a financially friendly professional tax software. It is easy to use, and you can store your documents in there document app. Cons The option to import assets did not work well for me. Needing to attach certain forms with the return does not work. Definitely recommended as a cost saving alternative to the bigger products, although you probably need a little more tax knowledge to make sure you have the right information reported. Pros Super inexpensive product that is ideal for solopreneurs and those doing taxes on the side when they are starting out. Pretty easy to get comfortable with the product quickly. Cons It lacks some of the more robust features that can be helpful if you have a large team, but it's not really trying for that market. Review Source Michael H. February 6, 2026 1.0 It has been good until 2026 when we found out that Drake will not support their software unless you are a Rightworks client or have it installed on your local computer/server. We use a local cloud provider that has always worked for us using Drake without issues until trying to install Drake 25. It keeps crashing if we are able to get in, and now, it won't let us open it at all. No help from Drake in this matter because they are driving people to use Rightworks. Pros We have used Drake since 2013. I was always impressed with the ease of use and the customer support call-ins. That is, until this year. Cons Up until this year, my only con was the online support was lacking. I couldn't always find answers in their knowledge base articles. Switched from [Taxprep](https://www.capterra.com/p/185193/Taxprep/) We switched from TaxWise, it wasn't one of the choices. I was not here when the firm switched to Drake in 2013. Pros The main good thing about Drake software is it's very low price point. At times it makes you wonder how they're able to afford it. Cons Clumsy navigation and lack of consistency, especially with the state returns. Lots of times you need to jump up and down the different tabs that are hidden within other tabs in order to find a missing checkbox. No company should ever increase their prices 23%+ year-over-year. Pros Works as it should most of the time. It can be an efficient platform if used properly. Just need to be gently so it does not hang up, as it tends to do that. Cons The latest 23.10% price increase is disappointing. Year‑over‑year hikes of this size don’t reflect the value delivered, especially when many features remain unchanged. Drake was sold 3 years ago and it's gotten MUCH WORSE since then. This year is the worst, by far. I've spent countless hours with support and they don't help. I will not be renewing it for next year. My advice is STAY AWAY! Pros Nothing anymore. Cost is reasonable, but it's not worth the hassle you will have. Most positive reviews are from years ago. Cons The software used to be good. It punches way above its weight for the price. Pros For a simple tax practice, this does just about everything you need it to. The price is certainly right and it scales well with a growing tax practice. I like how quickly you can go from start to finish once you understand where the inputs are. Cons I did not like how the state returns are extremely manual and do not flow well from state K-1s. We have been using this software for over a decade and it has worked flawlessly. When we have issues, we contact Drake’s support and they respond very quickly with a resolution. I can’t think of a single thing. Cons Setup has been a nightmare experience for us. We are way behind on tax season and their customer service is a joke. Wish we never signed up. I like that it pulls information from one year to the next, which saves time on data entry. It is also very easy to speak with someone from Drake on the phone. Cons Sometimes navigating to a different screen can be difficult. There can also be difficulty with determining how taxes are being calculated in the program. Occasionally there's bugs (on state and local) but those tend to be resolved quickly once Drake is notified Pros If you ever get stuck on a complicated tax return their customer service line is always a great help. I've never had to wait more than 5 minuets on hold and they usually answer in under a minuet. There's options for you to send the tax return to the customer support specialist securely so they can look at exactly what you are. If the problem was especially complicated, they would get back within the week. Cons The software looks a little dated. Switching between screens is not intuitive and the screens don't always match up with the forms on the tax returns. There's less accuracy on the state levels and even less on local. Preparing returns takes a lot longer with Drake than it did with Pro Series. Pros The customer service people speak english. Cons I think I could do returns more effectively with an excel workbook. This software is very difficult to use and unable to handle complex business returns. In pro-series when you receive an error message Pro Series provide a link to the issue. Drake simply says "error on schedule..." Drake does not explain the error and at times Drake references a form that is not even available on the Drake software. Additionally, when you convert Pro Series accounts to Drake, Drake does not transfer all of the information so you have to review the forms to determine if the correct data was transferred. You might as well reenter all of the data if you have to go in and fix it. The sales person pulled a bait and switch telling me that payroll products were included for a flat fee and then charged me for the payroll product and told me she made a mistake. When I make a mistake I acknowledge it and take care of the issue on my dime. Not Drake, they put it on the client. Drake also has a no refund policy after December 31. I do not know any tax preparers that would be using their 2019 tax preparation software before 12/31/2019. I suppose if I made such a poor product I would also limit the ability for customers to return it. Honestly if I wasn't so busy I would file suit for the refund of the price just because it infuriates me to be scammed like this. Maybe this summer my schedule will open up and I will do so. They have listened and added more features here and there. Their customer service is personal and professional. Pros Drake has software that is accurate with the tax forms and tax changes. It leads you to ask more questions and be very detailed and accurate with your clients. Cons I use another software program for my payables and receivables, so I have not used that feature on Drake. I like that when you call you get a live person and not voice prompts. If someone is thinking about purchasing a tax software program, you need to seriously consider Drake. Pros I have used this software for over 12 years. A few years ago, I opened my own practice and Drake was by far the least expensive program out there. Since I had already been using the software, the transition to my own company was easy. I didn't have to worry about the learning curve of knowing the software and it was easy to setup and start by business. Cons I opted to include Drake Accounting in my package, but feel that the Accounting program isn't as easy to accommodate as the tax program is. Owner Accounting Used the software for: Less than 6 months ### "AVOID Drake" March 8, 2022 2.0 Unpleasant, I was falsely told that I had more time to evaluate the product after purchase then I actually did so when I asked for a refund (no returns were filed) I was denied. Basically I was stuck paying for a cheap, inefficient program I won't use that would have cost me much more time to make sure everything was calculating right. Very disappointed. Pros Cost is the only pro for the program. I find the low cost doesn't make up for the shortcomings. Cons Navigation is cumbersome with multiple inputs needed for some tasks and other screens are hidden and have to be searched for so entries can be made and then some of the input screens are very limited. The program is quirky and inconsistent which did not lend itself to confidence in it and the interface was not efficient except for the most basic of returns. Some may find the shortcomings acceptable for a higher profit margin but I do not. Reason for choosing Drake Tax Cost and positive reviews by others. Now I want to warn others. Cons It lacks a tremendous amount of features available in other tax software products. It lacks ease of use in every feature. The diagnostics are not user friendly, and are only designed to fix the most basic problems. Drake is not designed to help you along the process. It is best for a tax professional that knows exactly what result is expected. When it is wrong, you have to know exactly what to do.
