### "Drake Tax - great solution for simple tax practice"

May 12, 2025

5.0

My experience with Drake Tax is great. It punches way above its weight for the price.

Pros

For a simple tax practice, this does just about everything you need it to. The price is certainly right and it scales well with a growing tax practice. I like how quickly you can go from start to finish once you understand where the inputs are.

Cons

I did not like how the state returns are extremely manual and do not flow well from state K-1s. I also think the customizable letters are very cumbersome to deal with

### "Drake Tax is a powerful and useful tax preparation software"

March 24, 2025

5.0

Our overall experience with Drake Tax has been wonderful. Once you get past the huge learning curve of the many options and “outdated” interface the software is an immensely powerful tool. The ability for the software to update clients from prior years is a particularly useful feature and saves us a lot of time. We have been using this software for over a decade and it has worked flawlessly. When we have issues, we contact Drake’s support and they respond very quickly with a resolution.

Pros

\- Great customer service - Local installation instead of cloud based - Updating client profiles imports return information from prior year - Filing amended returns is quick and easy

Cons

\- User interface has a large learning curve

### "Pretty good! "

February 6, 2025

Drake is great. Takes some learning, as most tax software. Other than the occasional acknowledgement issue, recommend!

Pros

Cost is good, integrates with a lot of things.

Cons

The acknowledgments fail 1:20 times. Drake will just fail to process acknowledgments. You have to call in & ask them to be redone, you can’t do it yourself.

### "Drake did not work"

March 6, 2025

1.0

Too labor intensive to transfer over from another provider.

Pros

All inclusive unlimited states, price was about the same.

Cons

I ordered a software didn’t received the final version until January when I started working I it was two labor intensive after transferring over from ATX a common 1040 with a dividend statement took me 45 minutes to get it ready to e-file. I tried to explain with Drake that it’s too labor-intensive and that it’s just not going to work out but they have a three day return policy REALLY???? It’s not like I was trying to rip them off. It just did not work, but you know now that they got my money that’s how corporate America works now.

### "Bad Customer Service"

February 4, 2025

1.0

Poor customer service, policies that keep you waiting for phone calls that never come.

Pros

not much. the software is buggy and not very intuitive. too often manual intervention is needed to avoid mistakes.

Cons

Expensive for what you get. The customer service is not good because requested return phone calls never come. They are quite happy to waste your time

### "Worst software Ever"

February 12, 2025

1.0

The worst experience / product I’ve ever used.

Pros

Nothing, it is so bad. I can’t think of a single thing.

Cons

Setup has been a nightmare experience for us. We are way behind on tax season and their customer service is a joke. Wish we never signed up. Just pay a little more and get a legit tax software. Drake hasn’t changed since the 1990s.

### "Does not function"

October 10, 2024

1.0

Pros

When it's working it is a very old looking version of IRS tax forms on your computer

Cons

It's a joke - I am trying to run a tax firm but preparers can't function because Drake updates every few days and the software is unusable unless everyone in the firm is logged out at the same time for an update.

### "A fantastic tax return prep program."

April 5, 2024

5.0

Drake makes it easy for our staff, at any level, to do their job with confidence. With its built in error messages and data validation features it is a great program.

Pros

Drake helps us optimize the time spent on each return because the built in compliance features and warnings gives us confidence that we are thorough with each return. The Gruntworx feature is a game changer, allowing us to minimize data entry needs.

Cons

My only issue is with the updates process. Obviously, real time changes make them necessary, however I am often the first person in and when I access Drake it requires all users are logged out. Because we are a small office it is easy enough to do but I can't imagine how that would affect a larger firm.

Pros

### "Drake is a best in class tax preparation software."

March 17, 2022

5.0

Overall, very good. I'll be very sad if I need to leave them to find a better cloud-based tax software.

Pros

I've been using Drake for over 10 years for tax prep. The pay-per-return was a fabulous price for when my practice was very small. Now that I have nearly 200 tax returns, I use the unlimited version and it's priced much better than comparable tax prep software. And their customer service over the years has been amazing. I've used several other tax software programs over the years and so far, this is the best.

Cons

The ONLY thing I find frustrating with Drake is the inability to work in the cloud without paying $100/mo per user for their hosting service (on top of the cost of the software). I have a remote accountant that would love to help enter tax data but I'd have to pay for all of the users in my office just to have the one remote accountant have access as well so it's not cost effective. They really need a cloud-based accounting option.

Reason for choosing Drake Tax

Mostly price, but I've stayed because of the quality product and superb customer service.

### "Drake uses programmers not tax professionals to design their product"

April 13, 2024

poorly trained staff but very friendly, unless u ask for their supervisor. I have been in calls w support for over an hour until I say “ u don’t know this do u?” When they answer in the affirmative you know they have staffing problems and they re trying to protect their managers from pirate clients

Pros

They are nice on the phone The portals work well n efficient

Cons

Their support staff is mostly untrained each year You must ask if the person u r talking to has been trained in the area u need help with Drake software folk cannot understand why, when a new user to their product, questions why Drake doesn’t flow information well between screens n forms Depending on whom u speak with - I have gotten “ that won’t work” when in fact management tells me- oh that is simple Staff does not understand their own software beyond the basics

Reason for choosing Drake Tax

### "Drake is OK for the price but has flaws and the product support doesn't live up to prior reputation"

June 14, 2022

3.0

I tried Drake tax because I received sales calls at least 4 days a week for over a year....so I figured I'd try the PPR version. I also tried it because Drake had a superior reputation for product/customer support (i.e., when something may not appear to report correctly, they respond and address it if so). That may have been true at some point, but I haven't found it so. As a new user, over the course of about 18 months, I contacted Drake maybe 5 times about an issue with either Drake Tax or Drake Portals. In most cases, the first point of contact didn't really understand the issue (which is OK). But, I hardly ever received any callback response from anyone who could respond to the issue (after being told I would). So, as far as I am concerned, Drake has no more support or concern about potential reporting issues than any other competitor (which is generally none). As long as that's the case, it seems better to go with a tax prep software that gets reporting right more often than not, such as Prosystem, Proconnect, or Ultratax if you can afford it.

Pros

For the money, Drake Tax offers more value compared to competitors. It's certainly not the worst. If you can't afford a more robust solution like Ultratax, Prosystem, or Lacerte, and you don't do terribly complex returns, Drake is a reasonable choice, and the Drake portal integration is pretty serviceable. The asset manager in Drake Tax is one of the best I've used, and handles group/bulk sales quite nicely. The built in integration with a document manager which automatically creates client folder structures when a new client is added is also handy.

Cons

Allocating things between states in Drake can be cumbersome, making you create a separate tab for each state rather than allocating in a grid, etc. Certain things do not flow correctly to the return without substantial preparer oversight or adjustment. State specific codes or items, vacation home loss carryovers, QBI reporting, PY basis losses reporting on Sch E among others. Product/Customer support has historically had a good reputation, but I've certainly found the opposite to be true. I've found no more concern for product support and customer inquiries than any other platform, which takes away a big reason for considering Drake in the first place.

### "Look no further for tax software!"

April 26, 2022

5.0

So glad I listened to a couple of colleagues when they recommended Drake Tax! Normally when you are using an expensive tax software, you spend more time looking at how to correct the diagnostics than you do to input the return. Not with Drake Tax. The exceptions and notes tell you exactly what screen to go to. Each error message can be handled within a few minutes. Making the overall tax process smooth and enjoyable.

Pros

This is one of the most all encompassing tax programs out there. Feature for feature - I see why a lot of firms use Drake. Easy to work with - move around - get right to the area you need - and if that is not enough - the help you get is unbelievable!!! bar none! I admit I had to call them a couple of times this busy season (since it was my first time to use it) and every call was answered by a person that easily answered my question within a couple of minutes. EVERY TIME! I don't think I was ever put on hold. The customer service is outstanding as the software is. It interfaced so easily with Tax Dome as well.

Cons

The only drawback I saw was that it was not in the cloud. It might be a possibility but I didn't have time to waste this season if you know what I mean. If it could have been in the cloud and synchronize with Tax Dome automatically - I would be in heaven. I have to worry that my laptop could be stolen and then I would be in terrible shape...

Reason for choosing Drake Tax

Ease of use, flexibility of the system working with TaxDome, thorough - covers all of the state tax filings that I needed to cover - Drake Tax has them all. You can't beat it.

### "E-Signature limitations"

October 6, 2023

5.0

Drake is continually improving their product and that is an important goal. The price of an annual subscription isn't cheap but there is entrance pricing for new offices. Drake Tax Software is in my opinion so much better than many other high priced solutions. The customer service is simply great.

Pros

Great customer service, fairly easy to use and administer, diagnostic feedback and information is very helpful. Portals allows me to work with my remote clients efficiently but there are some key limitations.

Cons

Portals remote e-signature is very helpful in most cases. However, in the case were the surviving spouse needs to sign in both places Portals falls down. It will not allow the surviving spouse to sign the return despite have death certificate and letter of testamentary. That is ridiculous and mind-numbingly stupid.

### "Company ignores functionality problems and does not timely fix systems when down"

January 19, 2021

2.0

It was good before the recent release of SecureFilePro but the company has miserably failed in their commitment to their customers and does not have the courtesy and commitment to address these real deficienciencies in the functionality of their software. If they cared about their customers, product and image they would have been on the phone immediately trying to understand the issues raised and how they make it impossible to work efficiently. Contact me at \[SENSITIVE CONTENT HIDDEN\] if you care Drake.

Pros

The tax software has been easy to use and generally support on it has been good

Cons

Their SecureFilePro release just prior to tax season is a complete disaster and company is not taking steps to fix the problems. System times out every 8 minutes (they refuse to lengthen the time-out period and continually state this is they way it is going to stay), their authentication on login is now taking as much as 27 minutes to get a security code to login, when you download a JPG or DOCX document it tries to open it in Excel, they converted the tax IDs used for login from 4 digits to 9 so now clients cannot login and when their system uploads documents it creates a duplicate site for the 9 digit id, navigation now takes multiple clicks to get to desired page where before it took one or two clicks. The company is unwilling to put someone on the phone to address these issues as they have made it impractical to use. The time-out settings are absurd and make it impossible to use the product as a tool to prepare tax returns.

### "Powerful Professional Tax Prep Software!"

April 14, 2023

There is a reason DrakeTax is the #1 Professional tax software in the US. It does an amazing job.

Pros

I really love the worksheets feature, it is integrated so nicely and really helps me keep track of my work. The integration with the TaxBook is also very helpful!

Cons

DrakeTax has a learning curve as it is not set up interview style, you have to know what you are doing and where to go. It also is outdated visually, it reminds me of a windows program from the 90's or early 00's.I wish the pay-per-return feature was available for corporate returns.

### "Great value for smaller firms"

December 20, 2022

4.0

Overall we have been happy with Drake for several years now. We looked at some alternatives this summer in response to the issues our clients had with the esignature process but ultimately determined Drake was still the right fit and we found another solution for the esignatures.

Pros

Drake is a very affordable tax preparation software that doesn't nickel and dime you for every feature. Most other software charges you extra for additional states. Drake runs quickly and covers our needs for tax preparation.

Cons

The biggest drawback for Drake is the esignature process through Drake Portals. The system is not user friendly and many of our clients had difficulty completing the process or didn't receive clear communication once they did complete it that they were done.

### "We are more profitable with Drake Tax"

February 26, 2021

5.0

We have been able to be much more efficient with Drake Tax and have been happy to get our profits up by reducing all of the costs of our other software.

Pros

Drake Tax is easy to implement, user friendly, and very cost effective. We were using another tax software and the base cost was much higher and then we were always spending more money every month on special authorizations and e-file fees. Our costs were out of control. With Drake there is one annual fee and nothing else all year. And that fee covers all of our installations, every type of return, and all e-file fees, there are no hidden costs and no extras.

Cons

There have been just a few times over the years where there was a statement or a form that I needed to include that the software did not produce. In those few cases though I just prepared the statement and attached it as a PDF to the return before e-filing, so, it was not a big deal.

### "Amazing Customer Support"

February 19, 2019

5.0

Great software overall. Occasionally there's bugs (on state and local) but those tend to be resolved quickly once Drake is notified

Pros

If you ever get stuck on a complicated tax return their customer service line is always a great help. I've never had to wait more than 5 minuets on hold and they usually answer in under a minuet. There's options for you to send the tax return to the customer support specialist securely so they can look at exactly what you are. If the problem was especially complicated, they would get back within the week.

Cons

The software looks a little dated. Switching between screens is not intuitive and the screens don't always match up with the forms on the tax returns. There's less accuracy on the state levels and even less on local.
