I've used it for everything from simple budgets to really complex data analysis projects, and it's never let me down. Pros Excel is really powerful. It's my go to for anything involving numbers or data analysis. Formulas and pivot tables are killer for slicing and dicing data. Conditional formatting and charts make it easy to spot trends at a glance. And you can automate practically anything. Cons Excel is definitely not winning any usability awards in 2026 and if you're not a total spreadsheet geek like me, the UI is straight out of the stone age, and some of the more advanced features are buried in the clunky menus. Pros Excel allows me to complete audit testing and workpapers easily using formulas. I have found that as an internal auditor, I can do almost everything I need to for my job within Excel, and it offers excellent value and functionality even compared to some of the well-known audit software options. The ability to create graphs, charts, and tables is valuable. I prefer Excel’s navigation menus to the menus in the software that I use for work. I also use Excel in my personal life for organizing, planning, and budgeting and the fact that there’s a mobile version that I can use on my tablet is another benefit. Cons I wish the mobile version’s menus were easier to navigate but I think that’s just an inherent limitation of mobile versions of software. Microsoft customer support can be difficult to reach at times, but has been exceptional to work with each time I have ended up needing their help (and many things you’d usually need customer support for can be done on their website). Good value for money especially when bundled with other microsoft products. Cons It can be difficult to remember more difficult functions beyond what is obvious (like sum, divide, etc) and there is not much in the program that can assist you in better understanding its capabilities.
