I have been a very long term user and appreciate the modifications and changes have almost always been positive.

Pros

Very efficient software. Easily integrates into other software. Has diffferent versions which can easily work with alternatives.

Cons

Formulas can sometimes be cumbersome. Can be difficult to move between versions. Does not integrate easily with AI software.

### "Great tool!"

October 27, 2025

5.0

Overall positive and reliable experience especially for tracking and data sets. It is reliable and trustworthy.

Pros

The ability to turn data sets into different types of graphs and to illustrate year over year gains and losses.

Cons

The auto save feature isn’t always trustworthy and the cross platform compatibility makes data sets and charts look wonky.

### "Microsoft Excel - Excellent to use"

March 8, 2026

5.0

My overall experience with Microsoft Excel has been great. I have been using it for 15 years now and have never been more impressed by any tool. I have integrated it with SQL database to manage large database and analyze it and create reports for it.

Pros

Excel is the only tool capable of data storage and analysis which is as simpler as it can get. It is the easiest of tools that I have worked with. Probably the reason why it's still around for decades.

Cons

The thing I don't like about Microsoft Excel is that it cannot efficiently store and manage large datasets in itself. For that it has to depend on third party tools.

Pros

What I like most about Microsoft Excel is that it’s easy to read and you can create formulas for various projects or reasons.

### "Need a new subscription to use Excel on my phone"

March 27, 2025

4.0

Excel is still a go-to tool in my daily work life. However, with having to purchase another subscription to use it on my phone I am now seeing if Google Sheets will give me what I need for my data analysis.

Pros

It provides many useful functions and helps manage my simple data analysis needs.

Cons

It has become too bloated. I also have a Office 365 subscription. Now I have to purchase a separate subscription to use Excel on my phone. Switched to Google Sheets.

Alternatives considered

Reason for choosing Microsoft Excel

When Excel came out years ago Google Sheets was not around. However, Google Sheets now allows me to do most of what I want.

### "Excel is great"

August 20, 2025

5.0

I use microsoft excel everyday at work to keep track of inventory. It is very easy to use and allows many options for manipulation of the data.

Pros

The versatility of the product. The fact I can write scripts is nice as well. I love that I have multiple options for how I want to manipulate data whether it is scripts, formulas or macros.

Cons

I dont like how difficult it is to make API calls with the scripts. I have tried multiple times to try to access APIs through scripting with Excel with no success.

### "Room For Improvement"

October 27, 2025

4.0

Overall, its been great and meets the needs that I have for creating spreadsheets. I think there is room for improvement but it is so widely used that features similar to other companies have been neglected because of its popularity.

Pros

Excel is the most widely used and common app. I like it most because everyone seems to know how to use and it. The features have improved slightly but overall is a great and common app to use.

Cons

It could have room for more growth with intuitive (AI) features regarding formulas and sharing. Sharing is still tied to whatever service for storage that you may have, so the ability to realtime edit together collaboratively could be improved.

### "Sometimes a nightmare."

March 30, 2026

3.0

Excel is such a classic. It’s the one tool I can’t live without for keeping my life in order, but man, it can be a nightmare when one tiny formula ruins your entire afternoon. It honestly feels like a superpower once you get the hang of it, but there are definitely days where I feel like I need a PhD just to get a simple chart looking right.

Pros

Excel lets me go from messy notes to complex, automated models without forcing a structure on me. That instant feedback loop is addictive.

Cons

It is very easy to make mistakes, such as typing over a formula, mistyping data, or having broken links.

### "A Powerful Dominant Product"

September 25, 2025

5.0

Excel is a powerful all-around widely known tool useful for putting data together that is best represented by columns or rows. It has a lot of hidden features, such as mathematical functions and can quickly make graphs after data is highlighted. Similar products lack usability or lack the powerful features.

Pros

It is easy to use, setting up simple tables for various types of spreadsheets. It has powerful hidden functions that put it high above competitive products such as Google Sheets.

Cons

There are certain more basic items that are not supported, and this hurts usability. For instance, filling cells with negative numbers is difficult as excel tries to automatically think you are going to select another cell for a function.

### "Excel my go to Spreadsheet."

March 24, 2025

5.0

I have been using MS Excel since about 1989. I have tried other programs that claim to do the same thing, but they always fall short.

Pros

The ability to tailor it to my needs and I can do complex calculations using formulas. I can use multiple tabs to separate data but still pull data into my calculations and simplify the output for other team members to read.

Cons

With very large data sets it can get bogged down and may require a more powerful computer to quickly run your calculations.

Alternatives considered

[Apache OpenOffice](https://www.capterra.com/p/160717/Apache-OpenOffice/)[Google Sheets](https://www.capterra.com/p/169718/Google-Sheets/)

Reason for choosing Microsoft Excel

I have been using Excel for over 36 years, I compare all other programs to excel for usability and functionality. So, it may be that I have a strong bias towards excel, but it is what it is. Excel does what I need and can be made to do much more.

### "Excel Helping you excel"

November 20, 2025

5.0

Overall, Excel has been great to me. It is Microsofts best product out there! Its able to do so much in terms of record keeping & organizing. I really love it.

Pros

Microsoft Excel is the best product out there. As an accountant who is always working on spreadsheets - I recommend Excel for every purpose it serves. It is easy to use, and its features are out of this world.

Cons

Despite it being easy to use, it does take some getting used to. Also, I wish it had a feature on a shared drive where people would be able to update a spreadsheet at the same time. Sometimes it is hard to be opening & closing a workbook.

### "A Powerful and Versatile Tool for Everyday Data Needs"

January 5, 2026

5.0

Overall, my experience with Excel has been very positive. It is a dependable and flexible tool that handles a wide range of tasks, from basic data entry to advanced analysis. While it has some limitations with scale and collaboration, its ease of use, wide adoption, and powerful features make it an essential and valuable application.

Pros

What I liked most about Excel is its versatility and reliability. It makes organizing, analyzing, and visualizing data straightforward with powerful formulas, pivot tables, and charts. It saves time, scales from simple lists to complex models, and remains intuitive even as tasks become more advanced.

Cons

Despite its strengths, Excel has some drawbacks. It can become slow and unstable with very large datasets, is prone to human error due to manual inputs and complex formulas, and lacks strong version control for team collaboration compared to more modern data tools.

### "Excel -lent Program!! "

March 28, 2025

5.0

Excel has the primary software that I use on a daily basis. Between using it to create forms, templates, budgets, performance tracking, inventory tracking, gift card tracking, financial reports, sorting data and creating charts. Microsoft forms will even export the answers to excel so that you can sort and organize them

Pros

I love this software. Most people do not realize how much power is in this program. It can be complex, and it does take some effort to become proficient and take advantage of some of the features. Pretty much anything it doesn't do natively can be done with VBA macros

Cons

The one thing that absolutely drives me crazy is automatically changing large numbers into scientific notation. For the life of me I can't figure out why that would make that a default setting with no option to turn it off.

### "Excel provides dependability "

January 5, 2026

5.0

Overall Excel is worth every penny spent on the license fee. It's a reliable product that allows you to keep track of all of your data in one sortable location.

Pros

I have been using Excel in both my professional and personal life for many years. The program can be used for many aspects in everyday life.

Cons

The hardest part about Excel is remembering all of the formulas, but with a quick search in the help field or Google you are on your way in no time.

### "Problems with Excel!"

August 15, 2025

2.0

Always a problem - Excel spreadsheets freeze over nothing and most of the time I have to restart my computer and lose my data just to get them off my screen and start over! So, that's why I give them a (2)!

Pros

Nothing

Cons

The find feature - I hunt for exact numbers but Excel can't find them even when right in front of the number(s)! This is frustrating as hell when the powerful Excel can't fiind it's own numbers!

### "Excel in the HR Space"

October 29, 2025

5.0

It has been awesome! I used to do a lot of the tracking manually, but I learned about conditional formatting recently. It has been a huge game changer, and I'm glad it's become part of my daily work.

Pros

There's an endless amount of possibilities with Excel. I've taken a number of courses on Excel, and I feel like there's so much to learn still! I enjoy the idea of being able to keep myself organized and making spreadsheets that matter for HR purposes.

Cons

The functionality of it can be very confusing at first; however, you kind of need to play around with it in order to learn and understand some of the functions. It can be overwhelming at first.
