Pros I have used Power BI for many years and it's an incredibly powerful tool for getting Business Insights. We can create our own custom reports and use its advanced algorithm to write our own script to get any insights we wish for. Cons Power BI is loaded with tons of features and for many complex scenarios, we need to code the things which require a developer. So many times it becomes costly to have Power BI. Application Developer Automotive Used the software for: 6-12 months ### "Power BI" November 21, 2019 4.0 Overall, we have just started to scratch the surface of using Power BI but expect to use it in every department across the company to create regular reports and dashboard - standardizing and streamlining the reporting at our company. We also expect that this tool will help us allow end users to create and manage their own reports instead of needing to rely on IT as they currently do. Pros Power BI is a great tool for utilizing more of the Office 365 suite in an interactive, graphical way. We like how once the data sources are set up, non-technical users find the software very easy and intuitive to use. Additionally they are encouraged to think of the data and relationships in new ways because of the ability to manipulate it in so many different types of visuals. Cons As someone who has a background in graphic design, I often have to help others make sure their reports and visuals are designed well to best convey their message. Because of this, it would be very helpful to have more global styling controls and ability to update many visuals at once. Additionally, there are times that my computer struggles to keep up with the program causing it to become non-responsive or crash. Because of this, we are having to limit our users who do not have "engineering grade" computers to more basic reports. Lastly, we still have some users that like to receive information delivered to their inbox via email - Power BI does not currently have a great tool for doing this like SSRS does. Pros Beautiful User Interface, easy to setup and connect to source of data and get analytics up and running. Updates seem to be on time also, this helps to keep any issues of bugs in check. Overall i am certain Power BI is an awesome product. Cons Pro version of Power BI is kind of costly, not everyone can afford this. Also, seems to drain data and doesn't function as it should in the absence of strong Internet connection, this i think is the cause for delay in loading data. I am able to create and manage dashboards for my various projects. I can upload data from other tools like Excel and use the data to add to or update my dashboards. Cons The tool can be a little confusing making it difficult to learn and use. The fact that it was free made all the difference. Pros The biggest positive that Power BI has going for it is that it was included as part of my organization's O365 subscription. I was able to use the tool to start showing other folks in the organization some of the powerful visualizations that are possible with a proper BI tool. Cons The UI is clunky, the data model is not very intuitive to set up, performance is slow, especially compared to other tools. No build in box and whisker plots was a huge downside too. Usual admin and usability issues you get with MS products but O365 integration seems to be improving all the time and usability getting better. Pros Great visualisations and power out of the box. Reasonably easy to learn and great developer community. Fairly seamless link between desktop and the Power BI service. easy to set up links to on premise data sources. Cons Desktop app can be very resource hungry. Deploying model changes and reports to the Power BI service can be buggy. Admin can take some working out so permissions etc are set correctly. Pros Having all the necessary information at my fingertips already digested and analyzed for me has made my daily coaching easier. I am able to see a broad amount of information summed up into individual graphs that help me understand the current performance of a person and helps me identify the area i need to focus my coaching in. Cons At first when it was implemented it was hard for me to understand the logic of thw tool. Pros If you are committed to giving your top manager an excellent and good looking reports, Power BI is a tool to use. I find that connecting to a source different than another Excell file can be challenging, but the reward is great. Many visualisation options and intuitive way to choose columns, rows and filters are the top points of this software Cons You need to be "at home" with your statistics, and to know how to connect to your sources of data. We also use it to show reports tracking how our employees are progressing towards accomplishing their goals. Finally, we use it to depict geographically where our grant money is being allocated (Power BI integrates ArcGIS). The latest GIS updates are some of Power BI's niftiest features! Pros Depending on your needs, it may be the free version is all you need. Visualizing your data is remarkably easy--Microsoft has connections already built for many common services, so you just provide your credentials, choose which elements you want to visualize, and then publish it. It's incredibly easy to add interactive charts, graphs, maps, etc, to your website, all updated in real time if your data source supports it, or you can use a simple spreadsheet as your data source if your data supports it. It's nearly the equal of long-time market leader Tableau, but much less expensive. And it nicely integrates into your Office 365 portfolio if you use that. Cons If you want to collaborate on shared data and distribute with apps, you have to purchase a license. Pros I like that I can import data from different file formats, not just a specific format. I like that i have the ability to reshape and edit my data before applying any analytical tool. Also, the interface is very easy and similar to other Microsoft products so it will be easy to deal with if you have previous background with other micrsoft applications . Cons The collaborative tools that Microsoft Power BI offers are very limited as it is hard to manage a project with my team through it. Also, I can't benefit from windows overlapping if I want to work on several workspaces at the same time. The reports look more professional, people with minimal programming knowledge can build them, and it's saving a lot of time with back and forth emails or custom development within internal applications. Pros Really easy to hook up to SQL and build dashboards and charts to share with management and other users. Cons Scheduling of sync only has 8 intervals per day. However, I believe this is an internal constraint because it is possible to connect directly to a data source as opposed to syncing. If you're not seeking real time (which I am) 8 syncs per day is probably enough. I'd like to see options for 15/30/60 minute syncs though. Review Source Bastián M. Pros What I like the most is the ease with which Power BI allows you to create an efficient, interactive and attractive dashboard. I like how quickly it recognizes the information in the database and creates the relationships automatically. Cons What I like the least is the slowness with which the program opens and with which the dax are edited inside, this makes the work really slow and tedious. Review Source Jigyasa K. I don't know the specifics of pricing but do know that it is significantly less expensive than Tableau, always a plus! Pros The user interface is excellent. With a short amount of training, one can easily navigate their way around importing/connecting data, and making beautiful visuals that can all be connected to each other for an interactive report or dashboard. Cons One aspect I'd love to see from Power BI is to have the option to allow for data exports in the form of an excel or csv file, as their rival Tableau can already do this. It is easier to use and sync online, in my experience, than Tableau. Cons It's cost is high.
