### "Tricky - Carefully evaluation total cost of ownership and organizational before investing your time"

Overall, I prefer Tableau for my business intelligence needs and find that the total cost of ownership and training is lower for an organization.

Pros

Coming from using Tableau and Excel, I was able to pick up PowerBI pretty quickly. The data sources window was especially intuitive, along with the data visualization suite for different charts. I especially liked the ability to show a single KPI such as a percentage in big block text.

Cons

I was frustrated when my organization wanted to move in the direction of PowerBI for a few reasons. First, I use a mac so there was no native desktop version for me to use and web is not at all the same. Second, I thought the fact that the desktop version was free was deceiving because it's basically inevitable that you will need some sort of paid license if you ever want your dashboards to leave your personal computer and be seen by others. The terms are also a bit confusing, such as between "report" and "dashboard."

### "Just switched to Power BI from Pentaho"

My company has integrated Power BI among our Development, Sales, Analytics, Prouduct, and Marketing teams to share real-time data reports.

Pros

Power BI analytics features much faster data load times than it's competitor, Pentaho. The user interface is also much friendly and much easier to learn than compared to Pentaho. Our team made the switch 6 months ago and our ability to get real-time business intelligence has been vastly improved.

Cons

Power BI reports only seem to be able to source data from a single sheet. I'm not sure if this will be fixed in a future iteration.

Pros

It provides great visibility on data, it is easy to download and it connects with different CRMs in order to use it as a database for performance

Cons

Downloading the data can be problematic and also since it offers different versions, some do not provide the level of detail you are looking for

Before Power BI, the access to our company’s information was very difficult, we had to generate manual reports and depended on a Microsoft partner to make the smallest change to those reports. Power BI has facilitated the making of everyday decisions because we now have access to information, we are now growing our business and keeping track of our growth!

Pros

I absolutely love Power BI and its endless possibilities to present dashboards and reports, and to keep track of your KPIs.

Cons

The price for the pro license is a bit expensive, but the free license has a lot of good features that can be use in a small business

Very positive. It has really bridged the gap for our company to be able to finally see our data easily in a way that makes sense.

Pros

Rapidly adding features and evolving quickly. Very good tools for visualizing all of our data and presenting it in a way that makes sense.

Cons

It is still a very new software package so there isnt a lot of documentation, and things change quickly.

Pros

As a Microsoft team-developed tool, this contains many advanced features for doing data analysis and reporting in an Entreprises environment. This can connect the high number of data sources and can configure to send reports normally. This is really easy to intergrade with other Microsoft products as well.

Cons

none of the cons were found during the time I used this tool but this app has some hanging issues while dealing with a large amount of data.

Pros

With Power BI, our data team has been able to democratize pretty much all the data in our org. Sales numbers, usage, who are our users, etc. They created dashboards (static ones and interactive ones) everyone can use in our organization to know more about the wealth of our org and also usage of our apps and their features. So it's super useful to know what to work on and when.

Cons

It is kind of difficult to build your own dashboards. Microsoft doesn't have a tendency to make things easy to use and intuitive. I had to watch a lot of youtube videos to train myself.

Pros

I enjoy the fact that I can merge data from multiple sources like Excel, SQL and Dataflows. It is very easy to use and also can be used to ETL process.

Cons

I dislike the fact that so far we can't use multiple datasets as sources. Also if you are not familiar with DAX you have limited possibilities to run measures.

Pros

Single handily, the thing I like most about Microsoft Power BI is the ability to visually see your data. Too often we have (many) bytes of data stuffed away in spreadsheets in a format that is hard to understand and compare in a traditional row/column format. Power BI gives us the ability to let people visually see the impact of their data.

Cons

The thing I like least about Microsoft Power BI is the learning curve. This is one of those tools where there is so much to the tool that it can be quite comprehensive to learn, or not making full use of the features and benefits.

The business is able to dissect and understand large amounts of data in a visual format. Our teams create dashboards that are used on a daily and weekly basis to understand where the various business segments are performing.

Pros

Power BI allows the user to show data in a very easy and digestible fashion. The charts are extremely intuitive and allow the user to dig deep into the analytics behind a chart which is far more in depth than using a chart in Excel, for instance.

Cons

This product requires quite a bit of setup from the IT team in my experience which has lead to the delay in implementation in my experiences.

I've only recently started using Power BI and I'm enjoying it so far. It's very complex and yet very easy to use. Optimization is handled excellently, so working with more than a million rows is still somewhat smooth. With larger data, I have to pre-aggregate. As Power BI is semi-relational, it doesn't have as much power in terms of querying as, say, Oracle.

Pros

Power BI is an absolute powerhouse. My favorite thing about it is the sheer amount of visualizations available, both - built-in and downloaded from marketplace. It also allows you to use Python and R data libraries such as pandas and matplotlib. It supports more than 30 importable data sources out of the box. It also has 2 programming languages: DAX and M Lang. You can easily create your own measurements using well-documented and robust formulas and achieve the desired result. It's also super cheap. I mean, $10 per user? It's a steal.

Cons

My main problem with it is editing imported data. It's either super complex (creating custom dictionary list and joining with correct cardinality) or downright impossible (if it doesn't have a unique identifier). Also, when editing interactions between visuals and slicers, the buttons which let you choose the interaction often get hidden by other visuals if your tiles are closely fit together.
