Cons Being honest, it's incredibly hard to learn how to use it at its full potential. For new users, besides the initial setup, it's not intuitive at all, and even for experienced users in tableau or alike, it might be challenging, but those are due to the incredible functionality it offers. There was an initial steep learning curve though, once I learned how to do a few of the basics, more complex actions weren't far away. Pros Great user friendly interface, which can be overwhelming at first, but is well worth getting to grips with. There is plenty of online and community support for Power BI. The insights, analytics and ability to present data in interesting ways is absolutely second to none. Its relatively easy to learn but there is so, SO much to master! Cons The daunting menus and difficulty in knowing how to properly "clean" data before use. Prior knowledge of Excel was both useful and a hindrance sometimes. Rather than fixing an issue because you can do it in Excel, it's worth learning how to model and clean the data correctly, rather than depending on the familiarity of Excel. But note that it takes a long time to setup and is not necessarily user friendly. It helps greatly to have a MS advisor or trainer involved (which costs money) but can save weeks of headache. Cons Like most tools it has limitations, but some of the notable limits our school has experienced involve who can see what (permissions), who can input what, who can analyze what, etc. As well, extracting the spurious or non-correlated variables can sometimes be challenging even if you know what you want to take out. Further, they offer many educational videos that help you get acquainted with the software and maximize functionality. Pros Power BI offers best-in-class data visualization. We have used Power BI to build several executive dashboards. Since it is a Microsoft product, it easily integrates with Excel and Access. It also offers visualization "on-the-go" through the mobile application offered on most major app stores. Cons The most robust dashboards require a data stream to be fed from a proper database.
