### "Simple and effective"

January 16, 2024

5.0

On the whole I enjoyed using Mercurial, it was one of my very first experiences with a version control system and helped me learn the ropes. But I didn't stay with it for long before I needed to learn Git for work and ended up enjoying using that more.

Pros

I like how simple Mercurial is. It bears a lot of resemblance to Git, but does away with some of the complexities. It's very fast, and simple to use.

Cons

The ecosystem for Mercurial is very small, and the plugins, tools and community support is just not there. It's a fine tool if you like the base functionality, but if you need graphical UIs or extensions, you might suffer.

### "My Experience with git tool Mercurial "

March 8, 2025

2.0

As a beginner its competitive platforms CI/CD features are far more better than this, very less features provided in free tier.

Pros

It has very simple work flow without any complexity.

Cons

Very limited features, very less security tools. It has very less community so no login with mercurial provided on collaboration sites.

Switched from

[Bitbucket](https://www.capterra.com/p/233341/Bitbucket/)

It also had very limited feature but this was also had same so after that I switched to git hub.

### "An easier (but more limited) option than git"

February 17, 2024

4.0

Mercurial was my first code versioning system and for personal or small team use it is perfect. However, if you work on large distributed projects or have more advanced needs, it could be limiting for your work, also because it is much less known than other systems (read "git plus github").

Pros

Mercurial is an easy and intuitive code versioning system, its commands are simple and it is difficult to initiate destructive operations on the code base.

Cons

Unfortunately (in my opinion) it is poorly (almost not at all) supported on commercial platforms and for this reason its adoption is very low. It is probably less powerful than git (this can be a pro and a con).

### "A very simple to begin with version control tool"

March 1, 2023

4.0

Used it for a little more than a year and it has been a pleasant and a decent experience using it for our development needs.

Pros

It is significantly easy to use, even the UI, commands are good to follow up with easily. Offers a large number of external extensions or plugins. With its distributed system architecture it is fast no doubt. Branching is not resource heavy because it is cheap. So, it is sufficiently powerful for basic to medium needs.

Cons

Not as powerful and feature-rich compared to other version control tools, especially when it comes to cloning, replication, rollbacks to name a few. Even the update rollouts are slow and it looks outdated.

### "Easy Version Control for Everyone"

March 17, 2020

4.0

Mercurial has allowed us to easily implement version control for our data in a useful manner, and we only stopped using it because of our primary software dropping support for it.

Pros

Makes version control simple, even for large files.

Cons

There is a bit of a learning curve, though for being what it is, it's not too steep.

### "The open source alternative to Git for version control of complex projects"

February 21, 2023

4.0

A free, open source software that allows developers to manage projects from small scale to complex.

Pros

What stands out the most is its robustness and stability, since it can handle large and complex projects. At the same time, it stores and manages versions properly.Regarding manageability, it is easy to perform common operations such as committing changes. In general, the complexity is limited by the size of the project.

Cons

Among the disadvantages is the difference in the command line syntax with respect to Git, which sometimes causes compatibility problems when working with other version control systems.

### "Light GIT alternative"

September 24, 2021

4.0

Pros

\- seems to be easier for developers to start working with, so the learning curve is lower comparing to GIT; - has a GUI tool - "tortoisehg" which is great in branch history visualizations and lots of other useful features; - has GNU v2 license; - IDE integrations;

Cons

\- bitbucket ending mercurial support, forcing to move to another VCS;

### "A free version controller"

September 7, 2023

5.0

It allowed me to properly recommend the product to people in the company.

Pros

The main advantage is that it is free and supports any amount of code. As additional and important is that it allows workers to move forward with parts of the code by allowing everyone to have a complete copy of the code.

Cons

As it is free, the support is limited, it depends on people from the community who solve problems or who have already had the same problems and support with similar ones.

Reason for choosing Mercurial

The main reason was because it is free, I did the cash flow of the company and I gave him to understand that I was not in a position to spend more. Then I searched, consulted about software with similar functionalities and this was the one that convinced me.

### "Most Complex Revision Control System"

August 28, 2018

2.0

Very very disappointing.

Pros

The only pro about Mercurial is that it comes with a workbench which allows you to see all the branches of you repository as well as keep up with their revisions.

Cons

After being a long term GIT user, mercurial seems like a step back for me. The branch creation, the up-merge , pull requests, merge and the working directory concept of mercurial is too confusing. The UI is dull and not user-friendly.
