has been a great addition to our practice, offering a modern, user-friendly platform with strong potential for continued improvement. What truly stands out is their pleasant and responsive support team. Whenever we have questions or run into challenges, they provide clear solutions in a timely manner, making it easy to keep our workflow moving without unnecessary delays. Their professionalism and positive attitude make every interaction smooth and reassuring. Ascend’s platform is already a solid foundation, and we’re excited to see it continue to grow and evolve alongside our organization’s needs. We highly recommend Dentrix Ascend to practices seeking dependable support.

Pros

’s support team has been absolutely outstanding, consistently providing fast, knowledgeable, and friendly assistance whenever we need help. Their dedication to resolving issues quickly and thoroughly makes a huge difference in keeping our office running smoothly. A special thank you to \[sensitive content hidden\], who truly goes above and beyond. She is patient, professional, and incredibly clear when explaining solutions, making even complex problems feel manageable. \[sensitive content hidden\]’s positive attitude and commitment to customer success reflect the very best of Dentrix Ascend support. We genuinely appreciate the excellent service and highly recommend their team to any practice.

Cons

Power Reporting in feels unnecessarily clumsy and frustrating to use. The layout isn’t intuitive, and getting meaningful, relevant data often feels like a complex puzzle—honestly, you’d need a PhD in Power Reporting just to make it useful. Even once you understand the process, the system is much too slow, with reports taking longer than they should to generate and refine. It makes simple analysis feel like a time-consuming project instead of a quick workflow step. Unfortunately, the best solution seems to be Jarvis, which is far more efficient—but it comes with an additional cost. That extra price adds insult to injury.

### "A is for Ascend! "

Overall our experience has been wonderful from the dedicated conversion team to help with imaging and forms. The integrated forms that put health alerts into your patient history are phenomenal. The insurance eligibility has saved our practice the money of two full time team members (appx 75k a year).

Pros

Customer support is quick and easy. Scheduling for mutli-locations is seamless. The insurance verification colors are helpful at a glance to know who needs attention.

Cons

Unable to re-assign a payment type without deleting payment slows down our team a great deal. Could use some feature improvements with that and we need a deceased patient status.

### "Dentrix Ascend Is The Future"

January 8, 2026

5.0

I have found to be a great teacher. What I mean by that is that instead of trying to make Ascend do things the way I was used to, I let it teach me new, better, and more productive ways to do things. It revolutionized our office flow and has saved us so much time and hassle. I really tried to learn all of the things Ascend can do and I was amazed at what I could customize so many things. A little effort from me to set up clinical note templates, multi codes, attaching our preferred codes to the ICD-10 codes used in Quick Exam, etc. meant that our processes were fast and easy from that point on. I love Dentrix Ascend and I love that it is constantly updating and bringing on new features, teaching me to do things more efficiently. It will never be an outdated software.

Pros

has a modern interface that is easy to use. I was drawn to it because it has charts and hyperlinks on the landing page. I didn't have to try and guess what a symbol was and where it would take me if I clicked on it. The graphs are easy to understand. Then I saw the Routing Panel. The Routing Panel is one of Ascend's best features. It allows us to be completely paperless, track where a patient is, post procedures, and won't let us check a patient out if we have forgotten something like collecting payment or scheduling recare.

Cons

Any time you change to a new software there is a learning curve. We switched to in 2018 and the process of inputting patient insurance was a much bigger task than we realized. Our trainer tried to tell us, but we did not pay attention so the first month was a very busy month as we scrambled to input insurance. Now Ascend auto imports insurance tables so new users don't have to go through what we did.

### "Fairbanks Dental Center Ascend review"

January 7, 2026

Overall, it is simple to use after some training. I don't ever want to switch practices software again.

Pros

The Customer support is excellent. When we first signed on with ascend and transitioned from "old dentrix" it was a daunting scary process no one wanted to do. Customer support made it easy and helped us through the challenges with ease.

Cons

I wish insurance verification was easier. I also wish there were quicker print options. seems insignificant, but sometimes it's 3-5 clicks just to print. Power reporting is confusing, the filters and options needed to get the right report data is overwhelming, I wish it could be simplified, and put into a tab or quick link to my favorite reports that saved my settings for each report I want to print.

Can never get ahold of customer support to help with any of the problems.

Pros

Nothing, there is nothing that I like about this software. I have worked in the dental field for almost 30 years and this is the worst software that I have ever used.

Cons

Everything is terrible. There are ALWAYS glitches. Treatment plans never calculate correctly. You can never get ahold of anyone to help. It's the bottom of the barrel software for dental.

### "DENTRIX ASCEND"

February 4, 2021

3.0

We just short of 2 years using Ascend. While I have gotten used to some of the more burdensome aspects, and it's okay, there are still many aspects that are inefficient and time consuming. Software, especially new "latest and greatest" should make workload easier and more efficient. Overall, Ascend hasn't made things more streamlined and efficient. It is the opposite.

Pros

Being web based is an advantage due to being able to access when out of the office with secure credentials. Occasionally situations arise when contacting patients outside of business hours of off location is important. Being able to add attachments to claims is easy and I do love this about Ascend, except......

Cons

......Many insurance plans we use are not supported neither in eclaims nor attachments in Ascend. Some plans with multiple payor ids, are only identified in Ascend with one or the wrong payor id altogether, increasing the number of paper claims required. It also not possible to update an employer/group when they change insurance plans, some do this yearly. A brand new group has to be added when this happens. Editing a group makes much more sense. Too many clicks to do everything, especially printing. Standard reporting is extremely difficult. Building the report needed is time consuming and confusing. Of all the complicated things you can do with Ascend, electronic billing isn't one of them. Statements have to be printed, stuffed, stamped and mailed. Very time consuming.

Reason for choosing Dentrix Ascend

Now having experience in both plans, My personal preference would have been to have stay with Eaglesoft and wait until the web based product in development was ready.

### "Mixed feelings..."

June 21, 2019

3.0

We are a multi-site group practice so going to a cloud EMR just seemed essential. Going with HS made sense b/c of the stability. Some features are really great... and some are major works in progress IMO.... some are just lacking altogether. It seems with the financial backing of HS the software could really be developed faster and with more features and if it did that, would probably completely own and dominate the cloud platforms. Right now, within the community of DDS I'm associated with, I still hear people gripe about Ascend and talk about how the prefer other cloud based sofwares... but we just wanted to go w/ Schein b/c of the long term stability. So we're hoping the features that are lacking will be built in soon - hopefully 6-12 months max. Things like online forms, robust a medical history module, a great lab case manager module, and a referral module seem essential to modern group practices...

Pros

Ascend was the obvious choice for us b/c H.S. is a stable company that isn't going anywhere. though we had heard some really good things about a few other platforms... stability seemed critical. The support has been very good through the facebook group and the support of friday forums, etc... this has felt very good...

Cons

There are some - what I would consider very basic- features that I am surprised they would even launch a platform without. Starting with a robust - AWESOME - medical history form that new patients (and even existing patients) could fill out prior to their visit. This feature should be online and built into the software. From what I can tell, groups that have been on Ascend for years are still doing paper... scan... upload to the D.C. That feels very 2005. Thought Ascend is "new" (7 years?) it still lacks an online medical history form and a robust way of customizing, having it pop up at visits, etc. Dentrix core finally just got this... but it hasn't showed up in Ascend yet. Things like referring procedures in the software.... right now there is no way to track referrals. Things like a lab case manager... these are every day things in a dental office and we are stuck using major work arounds with paper tracking and google docs for lab cases and yes- we're struggling to get a good system going. This seems like after 7 years it should be in the software. I'd like to know some realistic timelines (+/- 3 months?) of when features like this might be coming. it's hard to know if "soon" means in 2-3 years or in 3-6 months. Hopefully some of these very "basic" features will be implemented soon.

### "Dentrix Ascend Brought our office low"

May 8, 2024

3.0

We have 2 offices that switched from Dentrix to in December. We all hate it. We are moving to another program in a few weeks.

Pros

Looks clean. User function is not great.

Cons

So much clicking to get where you want to go. Laborious. No pretreatment estimate tracking. You can put in treatment, and send a preauthorization, but when it comes back, there's no way to communicate what the preestimate states except going to hunt for it and looking at a little note you put in yourself. Also, the power reporting is a NIGHTMARE. Overly complicated. You can't print a report. We have needed support several times and while the people I've actually gotten a hold of have been wonderful, I've waited on the phone for over 45 minutes twice before I was able to reach someone to help me. If you email them, they create a ticket. They don't tell you what to do with the ticket, but you have one. Enjoy. We went over a month until we were able to fix a problem with insurance coverage dates overlapping. We were completely locked out until I had someone remote in to my laptop at home and fix it. She did a great job, but the time it took to get the problem resolved was ridiculous.

### "Worst software I have used in 45 years!!!!!"

September 28, 2023

1.0

It takes 10 x longer to do anything in the front office. You cannot change insurance companies without going through 15 - 20 minutes of navigation, There is NO WAY to put a insurance information form on with the other 5 forms for the patient to fill out their own insurance information. You have to put the insurance address and telephone number in every time you put the insurance in, it does not do it automatically. The estimates are NEVER correct. The people that work there do not have a clue what they are doing. There is NOT one thing I like about this software

Pros

### "Dentrix Ascend review "

August 24, 2019

overall i like the product but correcting the accounting issues is something that is very frustrating and would possibly cause our practice to return to Dentrix

Pros

like that its cloud based and always evolving with updates as users make recommendations to improve. I like that I can access it anywhere.

Cons

I do not like the line item accounting and that credits can not be left on the ledger without affecting provider totals. A/R from previous months changes based on patient over-payments. We have all our fee schedules in and we do write offs at time of service /claim generation but there are still instances where we have over-collected and the only way to have the adjustment for the patient over-payment is to put the EOB in as insurance over-payment which is not accurate or refund the patient directly when the EOB is received, which is not practical

### "Great Ascend"

August 7, 2019

5.0

Ascend has made it possible to cross train our clinical staff through it’s intuitive design; and this has made our patient turnover very efficient, while reducing the need for addition front desk personnel.

Pros

This software saves countless hours of additional administrative work and processing mistakes. Our office switched from Eagle Soft, which we ran on a closed network, about 5 years ago; and after learning how to use theAscend software, I can honestly say that it was one of the best decisions that we have ever made for our practice.

Cons

There’s nothing that I don’t particularly dislike about the software. However, there is room for improvement with some of the newer features. For example, real time benefits along with automated verification and eligibility would make Ascend the perfect software, in my option.

### "Software has a lot of potential, but needs interface and functionality improvements"

March 19, 2019

3.0

Overall this program has a lot of potential to be great, but for the cost things should be running much more efficiently than they do. The interface could use some serious re-modeling and consideration for a fast moving practice that needs to reference notes, images, chart in one place instead of clicking around constantly to get information

Pros

Bouncing between separate offices is easy to work with, managing appointments, and using the ledger works great. Keeping track of family members, adding watched surfaces, and adding procedures is great to work with. X-ray features have improved over time

Cons

The overall interface of the clinical notes, charting and imaging is not user friendly. I've commented countless times about referencing the clinical notes with a patient in the chair is hard to use and hard to look back on old notes clicks around and x-ing out of boxes. The old dentrix note setup below the chart was much easier to use and made it much easier to refer to the chart in front of you. The image quality on xrays are ok, dexis is better than schick. Schick images are so bad I hardly consider them diagnostic. Dentrix and Schick both point the finger at each other and Dentrix answer is to use a twain device which looks like an interface from Windows '98 and is not user friendly or conducive to a fast working office.

### "I have used dentrix in private practice for several years, im not 100% happy with some of the features but it gets the job done."

October 10, 2017

3.0

There is definitely room for improvement when it comes to functionality and user friendly options. I also feel simplicity is a must as well.

Pros

Customer service is good, any updates are easy to take care of. The patient scheduling is very easy to do, and I like the colors that you can choose from for different providers. I also like the Pinboard feature, it is very useful and handy. Reports are easy to run and very helpful and useful.

Cons

Not user friendly, dental charting can use some changes. Don't care for the x-ray component. There are way too many pop ups when you opening the patients chart and you have to navigate thru all of them every time the chart is opened which is a headache. Medical / Dental history has to be scanned into the chart and there should be an automatic form where information already gets populated into patient's chart, it would save time. Would love to have a split screen on one page when treatment planning, charting and viewing xrays so you don't have a open and close screens back and forth.

May 17, 2021

5.0

Pros

Having used their non-cloud based Dentrix prior to the Ascend version, it was a seemless transition. Very user friendly, even our older employees caught on quickly and adapted.

Cons

The only con I have is the lack of some features, but they are doing a wonderful job slowly adding them to the program. I was just hoping for a time clock feature, and they debuted it last week! Now if there was a way for employees to leave notes; such as, I forgot to clock in at 7am or I didn't get a lunch today....

helps us to schedule patients, assist with insurance, and allow us to have paperless office, which is the bulk of what we need in the office.

Pros

I like that I can access this software from any location and even on my phone. It allows me to be able to assist patient's and access the schedule when I'm not in the office.

Cons

I don't like the way the Day sheet report prints out. I don't like how if a dollar amount is over $1000 it doesn't show the full number on the report when it's printed out. I also don't like that I can't tag payments with multiple tags. For example, If I enter a credit card payment I can only tag they credit card type but can't add like a tag for the doctor that provided the service for whom that payment is going towards. I also don't like that we can't customize text or send manual text messages to patients. I'm still getting use to using the software but the power reporting I find it not very user friendly.

Pros

Overall it was easy to learn

Pros

It was easy to learn how to use and not having any prior training on it I liked the software.

Cons

there are certain features I wish it had. for example to keep track of NP referrals it the listing is not in there BEFORE the patient sees our provider it will not capture that listing when its put in after the patient was seen its aggravating because some patients don't fill out their paperwork until the day of the appt and it gets so busy crazy that I forget to put in who referred them and by the end of the month if I go back and put in the referral after it wont capture it it on New Patient list and I end up having to manually do a list on my end.
