### "A Great Vector Drawing Package and the Best Open Source One"

September 29, 2022

4.0

A pleasure to use, gets the job done quickly and is cross-platform and available in portable version to boot. No excuse not to use it... anywhere everywhere.

Pros

Inkscape is the granddaddy of open source vector graphics. Each iteration improves on the last with good file format support, great shape handling and the ability to create class leading graphics. Throw in some fantastic plugins and you really dont need to look anywhere else

Cons

Any graphics package has a steep learning curve and idosyncracies, with Inkscape no different. Be prepared to invest some time in learning how to use it, but it is time well spent.

Reason for choosing Inkscape

Great functionality and a price to die for!

### "Great, even for beginners."

April 19, 2022

5.0

Pros

I am not a graphic designer; I am a coach. I need and want to create materials for my coachee on my own (cards, images stimulating reflections, and solutions). Inkscape offers me the possibility to make all of this. It hasn't been too hard to learn the basics and create satisfying working materials. I appreciate the community that supports the newbies in learning. There are many tutorials, and the manual is well-done and organized.

Cons

At the moment, for the use that I do, I can't find negative aspects! Yes, it takes time to learn because I am not a professional graphic designer, but this is a process required for me.

### "Logiciel complet et varié mais complexe"

December 29, 2020

5.0

Switched from

[Adobe Illustrator](https://www.capterra.com/p/227125/Adobe-Illustrator/)

Pour sa gratuité qui nous offre quasiment les mêmes fonctionnalités qu'un logiciel payant, ainsi que l'avis de certains utilisateurs qui m'ont conseillé Inkscape.

### "Without Inkscape I would have fail as a designer"

November 1, 2019

4.0

Right now, Inkscape is indispensable for me and my design career. Even though Inkscape is an open-source and free application, that doesn't mean it's inferior to paid alternatives in any way. Sure, Illustrator has its great set of features, but Inkscape is nowhere lesser. I have not needed to switch to any other alternative. It gets the job done really well! Love it!

Pros

It is very easy to use. It has a very friendly interface. It's really feature-packed. It has some out-of-the-box features equivalent to those in Adobe Illustrator but for free! It's open-source and get updated regularly. I love you can even work with PDF files natively. Also, I rely on the "trace bitmap" feature a lot: it's great to reuse royalty-free bitmaps on a quick design or just for inspiration. Inkscape is amazing and free!

Cons

I WISH it supported the Adobe Illustrator format (ai) but it's too much to ask as that is a proprietary file format. Also, some fundamental actions are complicated to implement: for example, setting default document properties shouldn't require to save a file in a specific folder or exporting your artwork as a .jpeg file shouldn't require an extension; those actions should be more straight forward.

Alternatives considered

[Adobe Illustrator](https://www.capterra.com/p/227125/Adobe-Illustrator/)

Reason for choosing Inkscape

Adobe Illustrator is really expensive. I was just starting as a designer, so I had no money. Inkscape is free and doesn't lack too many features when compared. So it was the way to go.

### "Great Free Alternative to Adobe Illustrator"

December 6, 2018

5.0

Overall, this program is great when paired with a paint program, something to support the vector. Gimp was really good to pair with it. I would definitely recommend

Pros

Inkscape is a vector software that allows you to make clean logos, illustrations, infographics, etc. I only just downloaded this program about a week ago but I've already used it in my freelance illustration job. The other program I had been using was Gimp, another free software. But Gimp wasn't allowing me to create basic shapes. So I was able to save the file I was working on in Gimp as a .pdf file and then bring it over to Inkscape where I added boxes that were perfectly resizeable and did not anchor after you made them. I was able to go back and adjust the color of the boxes and also add and format text within them. It was beautiful. Inkscape is part of GNU which is the Free Software Movement put in place for just that-- freedom of software, bringing people from all walks of life into an equal platform. So that is why I chose to pair my previous Gimp software with this free Inkscape software as they are part of GNU Systems. Actually, Inkscape borrows some tools and coding from GIMP making it so easy and natural to jump between the two programs in one project. I'd go as far as to say that Inkscape is to Gimp what Adobe Illustrator is to Adobe Photoshop. Each is needed in it's own capacity, each tackle the same job at different angles.

Cons

This is purely asthetic but one thing I was slightly put off by was the white layout. When I first logged into the program, it reminded me of Sticky Notes on my computer. It didn't have that Adobe-esque feel that Gimp had with basically the same dark design. It just didn't feel like it could hold up to creating numerous graphic layers and really tricky tool maneuvers. While obviously it is not Adobe Illustrator, Inkscape seems like it has a lot of essential features to pair up with Gimp, that when these two free programs are paired, the result is very similar to Adobe Suite products. It is a bit different in the tools area as AI. I wasn't able to figure out how to move objects onto different layers. It wasn't as intuitive as AI or Gimp, for that matter.

### "Open Source Vector Graphics Software"

April 7, 2019

I really like it over all you can do everything you need that all of the other paid softwares can do with exception to working with CMYK formats, this software is that good that when they get to integrate the CMYK color format as a printout file, a great majority of the people in the printing industry will switch to it. Is so well thought that is possible to designs faster than illustrator and corel draw, many of the tools make the job easier plus you can give a donation of 30 bucks or 100 bucks or 10 a year depending on you, but you get so much power for every cent or dollar you donate to the inkscape team.

Pros

\- The amount of stuff you can do with this Open Source software is outstanding and the quality is superb, you can create all the graphics necessary for your websites, motion graphics, banners, games and animations. - Also is possible to export to a variety of file formats supported by adobe, save images with transparency and even create DXF files for CNC and G code machine cuts, even use your plotter straight out of the software with a plug in.

Cons

\- May have a bit of a steep learning curve since it is open source but there is ton of documentation and videos in youtube to overcome this challenge. - With heavy graphics the program can crash if you do not save your work on layers so you can turn off finished work and work on layers, but can be overcomed with constant saving. - It can be confusing when you select graphics because it’s highlighted only with a dotted box. - Some tools don't work in a logical manner. - It does not support CMYK colors.

### "Inkscape"

May 5, 2023

4.0

### "Inkscape - a powerful tool of creating graphics"

April 10, 2022

4.0

I use Inkscape for making vector graphics for my research papers and articles. Initially, I was using simple powerpoint to create figures and block diagrams. Whenever I used these images in my research paper, their quality became deteriorated. Then I found Inkscape and my life became easy. Now I can easily create figures and images and export them in .eps format to use them in my research papers.

Pros

It is free and accessible. One can easily get familiar with its tools, because there is a quick support from community in terms of tutorials and guidance. It is backward compatible; files created in svg format in older versions can be opened in newer versions.

Cons

Sometimes, I find it difficult to write text in Latex format. There should be seamless text conversion. Whenever, somebody import figures or images in Inkscape, their sizes or pixels should be automatically adjusted with the existed graphics.

### "1.0 Version Much Improved"

January 12, 2021

5.0

I have been looking for quite awhile for a replacement for my Adobe Fireworks graphics program. I needed a tool that allowed me to easily manipulate graphics and create new content with ease. I'm not a graphics designer, so I don't need the power and complexity of Photoshop or Gimp, but something that will allow me to do some basic graphics manipulation with ease. Inkscape fits this need well. I also wanted something multiplatform since I work primarily on a Mac with an Ubuntu machine as my alternate. Inkscape runs great on each.

Pros

I like the fact that I can insert basic shapes and manipulate existing images with relative ease. I'm a developer (not designer) so I do get artwork created by others that needs manipulating. Inkscape allows me to resize, reformat and do basic image manipulation with ease.

Cons

I was using the beta 1.0 version previously and am happy to see the release of the official 1.0 version for the Mac that resolved a bunch of issues. I would welcome a more feature rich "magic wand" tool to select objects and be able to manipulate image boundaries. The software is powerful although with power comes complexity at times.

### "The best open source option for creating vector graphics"

December 26, 2018

5.0

Compared to the minor setbacks, I recommend InkScape for all vector drawings.

Pros

If you're looking to 'create' vector graphics, InkScape is very straightforward and simple to use. It has a well-arranged menu system and it allows you to do any 2D graphic that you'd otherwise create using expensive programs like Illustrator. It runs on most platforms - for me I need to use it on Windows and Ubuntu and it works without a flaw. It supports layers but you don't really need it since you can easily re-edit every single object even on the same layer. The fact that the files created are as SVGs allows the images to be directly opened on all modern web browsers. I truly admire the work of the developers here as this is a great open source program and you can just download it for free.

Cons

These are the main drawbacks of InkScape: 1. You can only export images as PNG files if you need bitmap exports. Not even JPEG is possible. 2. 3D graphics are not possible. 3. Saving as other formats or importing from AI files is not always great. It seems a little buggy. 4. There is no way to know if your colours are print or screen-friendly. This is something that you find important especially for printing logos and art work. Despite these drawbacks, I always choose it as I find it very comfortable working with it.

### "A powerful vector drawing software for your creations!"

October 4, 2022

5.0

Inkscape is a wonderful free vector tool. It is perfect for graphic design and can be used without difficulty if you take the time to learn how to use it. I recommend it!

Pros

Besides being free and open source, Inkscape has some interesting features. For example, I like the fact that it allows you to create images in SVG (vector) format, which has many advantages over traditional raster images (JPEG, GIF and PNG). Vector images are smaller, flexible and scalable without loss of quality. This is an undeniable advantage. It also adapts to the main operating systems such as Windows, Linux and MacOS. This suits me perfectly since I have two computers, one where Windows is installed and the other MacOS.

Cons

A little slow to start but I gladly forgive it because it helps me to create for example beautiful stickers!

### "Free Open Source Alternative"

Recommended for those looking to move away from Adobe's subscription model.

Pros

Provides most of the core functionality from other software such as Illustrator without the price tag. Allows for the conversion of Bitmap Images into Vector Images easily. Impressive compatibility with most other Vector Based software file types. Pairs well with GIMP as a free software package.

Cons

UI can be unintuitive at times, lacks the customisability that other software allows for and does not support dark mode. Limited to PNG output for Bitmap Images. Text Editing can be finicky at times, particularly with Spacing between Baselines.

### "Using Inkscape"

September 30, 2022

5.0

I have been using Inkscape for many years and it is an essential part of my Technical Writer's toolkit. It provides a rich editing environment with numerous features and functions for creating and editing vector diagrams which can then be included within the documentation I create. This is a tool which rivals Adobe Illustrator, and can in fact open Illustrator (.ai) files flawlessly, allowing me on occasion to "round trip" files from colleagues who only use Illustrator, i.e. open edit and save back into Illustrator format without a single hitch. The plethora of editing tools available within this program are truly staggering. To see the kind of capabilities this program has, visit the user contribution library to see just what can be accomplished with it.

Pros

Inkscape is an outstanding vector graphics editing program allowing a user to create stunning vector designs and save them in SVG format which can then be used by a variety of other programs. The tools available within the package are varied and incredible useful.

Cons

Inkscape's user experience is a little quirky at times and one or two the tools are not entirely intuitive. That said it does not take much usage to master these quirks and foibles.

### "Inkscape for SVGs"

April 23, 2022

4.0

SVG editing was the main reason I used Inkscape and it has delivered on what it offers.

Pros

For editing SVGs, I find Inkscape to be the 'quick and dirty' tool that I use most often. Adobe Illustrator can do the same things, but Inkscape isn't weighed down by the bloat that Illustrator suffers from. If you just need to trim some space off an SVG, Inkscape will do it in seconds with a single command. Illustrator requires you to jump through hoops to do the same.

Cons

While it's quick and easy to do the small stuff, Inkscape still lacks the tools that Illustrator provides. Inkscape can also feel like a tool that was made to explicitly be different than Illustrator, as not much is laid out the same at all.

### "Um ótimo editor de gráficos vetoriais grátis"

May 28, 2021

5.0

### "Escape Expensive Vector Suites with Inkscape"

August 19, 2019

5.0

Pros

100% FREE for the entire package and that's an unbeatable deal. While this doesn't offer as much advanced features as Illustrator or Corel, this software does offer a lot. This is still the best free software of this time of artistic platform. Other Vector image software that's free or even some of the lower-end pay for stuff doesn't compare to Inkscape. If you are familiar at all with Illustrator, then this will feel pretty similar. If you are new to vector images, there's some pretty basic things you can do quickly and a decent amount of tutorials on Youtube and so on. I've used this to make logos for commissioned work and for my own art and I think it's very good. I use illustrator too, but I find myself loading Inkscape often for very quick images. The program isn't very difficult but there's a bit of a learning curb for new folks.

Cons

Not as many features as higher end pay-for-stuff, but it is free and what you get for the price of the time it takes to download is decent. If you are creating simple vector art images, this is pretty decent, but if you are doing something like vector animation, Adobe Illustrator might be worth sticking with. The software is not as intuitive as similar products, but it's pretty versatile.

Pros

### "Very useful tool to create figures and diagrams fast and effectively!"

August 13, 2018

4.0

Pros

I use this tool regularly at work to help me create visuals for my technical reports, whether it be a free body diagram or an image depicting the layout of my assemblies. Inkscape has many useful features, with my favorite being the "Layer" option which allows you to create layers to draw on that can be above or below the beginning layer. This feature allows you to add in certain figures in the background or foreground without having to restart the entire drawing. Another useful tool is the Grid View which displays the entire sheet in a grid like style. This is preferred to me as my drawings are usually needed to be relatively precise and having the grid style helps to ensure that.

Cons

There is not much I can say negatively about this software. It is open source and there are many tutorials online to help you create figures, making it all around an excellent decision for a drawing tool. It lacks some of the more advanced features you would get in PhotoShop but there are little tricks you can do to get around.

### "Power, Free, and Open Source"

November 8, 2019

Inkscape allows me to create designs for laser cutting, for logos and other web graphics, etc. There is definitely a learning curve, but there is a wealth of information in a variety of formats to help get smooth things out.

Pros

I appreciate that I get a powerful vector design option without being tied to a costly subscription. As a small business owner (with an equally small budget) who needs to use quality design software, Inkscape has all of the features I need to get the job done and then some.

Cons

Inkscape isn't always as user friendly as it could be and every once and awhile I find myself looking feature that seems like it should be an obvious choice to include. There are always work arounds, but they take longer.

Alternatives considered

Reason for choosing Inkscape

Largely because it's free, although I would be willing to pay for it. I have a particular dislike for the subscription software model, so I was glad for a quality alternative.
