I am a company director, not an accountant or tax agent. I initially used the trial and subsequently paid for/upgraded the products I needed. I connected QuickBooks, worked through Accounts Production, mapped my accounts and successfully submitted my statutory accounts to Companies House. The serious problem arose when I tried to submit my Corporation Tax return to HMRC. I was able to prepare the CT600, attach the accounts, pass the HMRC validation checks and get all the way to the filing stage. After numerous unsuccessful submission attempts, I contacted IRIS technical support. I explained that I was filing for my own limited company and was not an accountant or registered tax agent. According to what I was then told by technical support, the filing setup I was trying to use was not available to me as a non-agent/self-filer. This was information I believe should have been made completely clear before I paid and committed to a 12-month subscription. I subsequently asked IRIS to cancel my subscription because the software could not fulfil the purpose for which I had bought it. My cancellation request was refused. What makes this particularly frustrating is that I had already invested a substantial amount of time setting up the software, connecting QuickBooks, preparing the accounts and producing the Corporation Tax returns before discovering the limitation at the final filing stage. My advice to any small limited-company director considering IRIS Elements is simple: before purchasing, get written confirmation that the exact subscription you are buying supports filing your own company's CT600 as a non-agent/self-filer using your own Government Gateway credentials. Do not assume that being able to prepare a Corporation Tax return means you will necessarily be able to submit it yourself. I wish this distinction had been made clear to me before I subscribed. I have documented my experience in more detail, including the steps I went through and the issues I encountered, at elements-iris.co.uk. We were mis-sold the system and our account manager never took calls from us to sort the problems out. Pros Nothing. The software is full of bugs and initially corrupted Accountancy suite on transferring over. Technical support is rubbish and we ended up sorting some of the problems out ourselves. Cons Our experience of IRIS Elements has been extremely disappointing. We moved to Elements expecting a more modern and integrated practice management solution, particularly for quotations, letters of engagement, accounts and tax work. In practice, we found additional licensing requirements, extra costs, workflow limitations and functionality differences that were not clear to us before we committed. The system itself is full of bugs and we also experienced problems with data import, additional manual processes, functionality gaps compared with the legacy IRIS products, and issues that increased staff time and the risk of error. IRIS has since acknowledged that some aspects of the Proposal Manager requirement and user licensing could have been clearer, but has still refused to allow us to exit the remaining contracts without further charges. We have now moved our entire practice to another provider. Based on our experience, I would strongly recommend that any firm considering IRIS Elements gets every licensing requirement, workflow and limitation confirmed in writing before signing. Pros The product is usable when it works, the personal tax software is good. The sales team do a good job of convincing you that everything will run smoothly, and the software is just as good as PTP. Cons The accounts production software is limited and only good for simple clients, the customer service is terrible. When you have a problem you need to raise a ticket which takes days to respond to. When you ring you go through to an overseas call center staffed with people who only know how to raise a ticket. Because of this, when you get an issue, which you will, it will be a problem for days rather than minutes or hours. Pros Easy to use and available anywhere online so not limited to one computer. The cost is good and offers a number of licences depending on your requirements. I had one query which was quickly resolved by their online support. Cons The licencing is a challenge to get all of the products within the same licence period with a very long 90 day notice length.
