### "Why should you use Vinchin"

July 23, 2026

5.0

Vinchin Backup & Recovery provides enterprise-grade backup and disaster recovery strategies for all your workloads—including VMware, Hyper-V, XenServer, XCP-ng, oVirt, RHV, Oracle OLVM, Sangfor HCI, OpenStack, Huawei FusionCompute, H3C CAS/UIS, ZStack, Proxmox, Oracle DB, MySQL, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, Postgres Pro, MariaDB, physical Windows and Linux machines, and file shares/NAS—along with support for cross-platform recovery or migration, backup verification, cloud archiving, offsite copies, ransomware protection, and other data protection features, all delivered through comprehensive, cost-optimized, and scalable solutions. Overall, I was very pleased with the experience.

Pros

Multi-platform support: VMware, Hyper-V, XenServer, XCP-ng, oVirt, RHV, Oracle OLVM, Sangfor HCI, OpenStack, Huawei FusionCompute, H3C CAS/UIS, ZStack, Proxmox, Oracle DB, MySQL, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, Postgres Pro, MariaDB, physical Windows and Linux machines, and file shares/NAS. All-in-one solution: Vinchin Backup & Recovery is easy to install and use, with no learning curve. Whether you are an SME or a large enterprise with branch offices managing petabyte-scale data, Vinchin provides the most cost-effective all-in-one solution.

Cons

I ran into a few hiccups when Vinchin failed to restore the VM to one ESXi host, but it restored perfectly to another. I didn't use instant restore—I used the standard restore method instead—and moved the VMs one by one. I haven't tried a scheduled backup yet.

### "Reliable multi-hypervisor backup that punches above its price tag"

August 14, 2026

4.0

Positive. We adopted it because it covered hypervisors our previous solution didn't, and it has been dependable (Jobs run on schedule, restores work, administration doesn't eat much time). Licensing is easy to explain to clients and renewals don't surprise anyone. It isn't a Veeam replacement in every respect, observability, reporting and multi-tenant tooling are clearly less mature, and you feel that when something breaks. But for a heterogeneous environment on a budget the trade-off is worth it. Recommended for service providers and mid-sized IT teams, just test your restores and your object storage targets before relying on them.

Pros

What sold us was the hypervisor coverage. We're a service provider with a mixed estate (VMware vSphere, Hyper-V, XCP-ng and Sangfor HCI) and Vinchin backs all of them up agentlessly from one console. Very few products do that without a second license or agents inside every guest. Value for money is excellent: per-socket licensing is transparent and costs a fraction of Veeam or Commvault for the same host count. The learning curve is short — clean web console, self-explanatory job wizards, first jobs running the same day. Instant VM recovery has genuinely saved us, bringing a failed VM back online straight from the backup repository in minutes. Support is responsive and technically competent.

Cons

Logging is the weak point. When a job fails the log rarely tells you why, so you open a ticket for something you should be able to diagnose yourself. Documentation for advanced scenarios is thin. The dashboard and reporting are functional but basic, limited alert customization and no polished reports to hand a client, so we still build our own. For an MSP, multi-tenancy could go further: separating clients and delegating access is more manual than it should be. Cloud/object storage is noticeably slower than local repositories, and Microsoft 365 coverage is incomplete. The backup server is also resource-hungry, give it real CPU and RAM.

Alternatives considered

[NAKIVO Backup & Replication](https://www.capterra.com/p/161328/NAKIVO/)

Reason for choosing Vinchin Backup & Recovery

Hypervisor coverage and licensing. Neither alternative supported every platform we run — Sangfor HCI and XCP-ng in particular — and the ones that came close required add-ons that pushed the price back up. Vinchin covered everything from one console with transparent per-socket licensing that is easy to pass through to clients.

Switched from

[Veeam Data Platform](https://www.capterra.com/p/154905/Veeam-Availability-Suite/)

Renewal cost was rising faster than our environment, and it didn't cover every platform we manage — we still had to handle XCP-ng and Sangfor HCI separately. Vinchin consolidated all of our hypervisors into a single agentless console for a fraction of the licensing.

### "comet: take us now"

April 3, 2025

1.0

nearly identical to 100 other products with equally forgettable names

Pros

nothing really differentiates this product from any other. it's like how every bank offers the same exact 'features' and every home insurance and car insurance and health insurance and everything else in your life is identical. does backup program things, box checked, lets move on

Cons

the price. i just cant bring myself to pay actual money for something that is essentially an elaborate gui for rsync. i actually, and i'm not making this up, used Claude AI to write a python script that just maps the datastores off the host server via sshfs and tar/zstandard's them. saved me like $20,000 which of course i don't actually get but -- neither do you.

Response from Vinchin

April 7, 2025

Hi Clint, Fair points—we appreciate the candid (and creative!) feedback. While we do aim to make backups simpler and more reliable than a DIY script (especially at scale), we totally get that not everyone needs a polished solution when rsync + some clever scripting does the trick. That said, if you ever find yourself wanting enterprise-grade support, deduplication, or hands-off automation, we’d love another shot. Either way, kudos on the Claude-powered setup—sounds like a fun project! Best, Emily

### "Solusi Backup yang Andal dan Mudah Digunakan untuk Lingkungan Virtual."

June 28, 2026

5.0

Overall, Vinchin Backup & Recovery has been a reliable solution for protecting our virtual infrastructure. It covers our backup and disaster recovery needs efficiently with minimal administrative overhead. The product continues to improve with each update, and we are satisfied with its performance in our production environment.

Pros

Vinchin Backup & Recovery offers an intuitive dashboard that makes it easy to manage backup jobs across multiple virtual environments including VMware, Proxmox, Openstack and Hyper-V. The setup process is straightforward, and the learning curve is minimal even for new users. Backup scheduling is flexible, and the restore process - including instant VM recovery - works reliably and fast. Value for money is excellent compared to other enterprise backup solutions.

Cons

Documentation could be more comprehensive, especially for advanced configurations and integration with third-party storage. Customer support response time could be improved for non-critical issues. The monitoring dashboard, while functional, could benefit from more detailed reporting and alerting customization options.

### "Streamlined, Reliable, and Highly Cost-Effective Multi-Hypervisor Backup Solution"

August 31, 2026

5.0

We have been using Vinchin Backup & Recovery for over a year to secure our mixed infrastructure environment (a combination of VMware vSphere and Proxmox VE). Overall, the experience has been incredibly positive, significantly cutting down the complexity of our disaster recovery management. Learning Curve & Dashboard: The initial setup and navigation process was seamless. The web-based interface is neatly organized, intuitive, and requires no extensive technical training. Mapping out backup workflows, configuring instant restores, and setting up schedules can all be done in just a few clicks without needing to install agents on every single VM. Licensing & Value for Money: A primary reason we chose Vinchin was their perpetual licensing option. Compared to major competitors that are increasingly forcing expensive annual subscription models, Vinchin's licensing scheme is much more transparent and budget-friendly without sacrificing core enterprise features. Cloud Storage & Offsite Backup: Integration with S3-compatible cloud storage providers (such as AWS S3 and MinIO) and Azure Blob operates flawlessly. The automated cloud archive feature helps us meet long-term data retention compliance regulations in a cost-effective manner. Customer Support: The technical support team is highly responsive. When we migrated our local storage to a new repository, the support team replied to our ticket within hours and provided spot-on, step-by-step guidance. Bugs & Issues: During daily operations, the application runs very stably. The only minor hiccups we encountered were related to pruning retention policies when the backup target storage was nearly full, but these issues were permanently resolved after upgrading to their latest version.

Pros

Broad Multi-Hypervisor Support: The agentless backup functionality works exceptionally well across a wide variety of virtualization platforms (VMware, XenServer, Proxmox, Hyper-V) all managed from one unified console. Instant Recovery: The Instant VM Restore feature allows us to spin up a failed VM directly from the backup file in minutes, which is a lifesaver during hardware failures. Data Compression & Deduplication: Storage space savings are highly noticeable thanks to the built-in compression and Bit-Set In-Depth Deduplication capabilities. Perpetual Licensing: Provides excellent long-term cost predictability for our IT department without the nasty surprise of inflated annual renewal fees.

Cons

Reporting Features: While the visual dashboard is informative in real-time, customizing executive reports (PDF/CSV) for monthly audits feels a bit rigid. I would love to see more varied metrics and flexible formatting options. Troubleshooting Documentation: The official documentation covers basic installation steps perfectly, but the advanced troubleshooting guides for complex error handling or specific network incident scenarios could be more detailed in their knowledge base.

### "A backup application for a large number of system"

July 27, 2026

5.0

In my experience, Vinchin Backup is suitable for certain datacenters and large organizations. I wouldn't use it for a very small server with limited resources because its VM requires 6-8 vCPUs and 16GB of RAM. It wouldn't make sense.

Pros

I'm a reseller and have been installing Vinchin for my customers for over six years. Vinchin Backup has solved several problems for me thanks to its support for multiple virtualization platforms and cross-platform recovery. The latter is also very useful for migrations from one platform to another. My primary use has been to back up the Sangfor HCI cluster.

Cons

The management and configuration of backup job scheduling could be improved, even if it already allows you to plan in almost all possible ways.

### "Dependable Data Protection with Excellent Value for Money"

August 7, 2026

5.0

The product delivers strong value for money, provides dependable backup performance, and simplifies backup management across virtual environments. Its ease of deployment, comprehensive features, and responsive vendor support make it a solution we can confidently recommend to organizations looking for a robust and affordable backup platform.

Pros

Vinchin Backup & Recovery offers a reliable and cost-effective backup solution for virtualized environments. As a system integrator, we appreciate its straightforward deployment process, centralized management dashboard, and broad compatibility with major virtualization platforms. The backup and recovery performance is stable, and the interface is user-friendly, making it easier for both technical teams and end customers to manage data protection.

Cons

While the product performs well overall, there is still room for improvement in reporting customization and advanced monitoring features. Some customers may require more detailed analytics and integration options with third-party monitoring platforms. The user interface could also benefit from additional customization capabilities for larger enterprise environments.

### "Cost-Effective Multi-Hypervisor Backup Solution with Great V2V Capabilities"

August 10, 2026

5.0

Overall, Vinchin has proven to be a reliable, cost-effective, and robust enterprise data protection alternative. Deployment and initial setup are streamlined, taking only a couple of hours to get running smoothly. Routine VM and database backups execute consistently, and technical support is responsive when tackling version-specific nuances. It provides high-end disaster recovery capabilities without the massive overhead costs traditionally associated with enterprise backup suites.

Pros

Outstanding multi-hypervisor support (seamlessly handles mainstream platforms as well as open-source environments like Proxmox and XCP-ng). The agentless deployment is fast, and the web console is intuitive with a very low learning curve. Features like Instant VM Recovery and smooth cross-platform V2V migration save immense time during emergencies or platform transitions. Great ROI and transparent licensing compared to legacy market leaders.

Cons

The reporting and log details could be significantly improved—error codes and log outputs are sometimes too vague, making deeper troubleshooting difficult without contacting support.

### "Ultimate backup solution for Citrix Hypervisor/XenServer 8?"

April 30, 2025

5.0

I originally investigated Vinchin as a backup solution for Citrix Hypervisor (XenServer), as very few mainstream backup solutions provided for this product. I was greatly impressed by Vinchin in regards to the full range of backup features it provided, and the ease of getting to use it if you have Veeam experience.

Pros

if you're familiar with Veeam Backup & Recovery, you should find this quite intuitive. Very similar functionality as well.

Cons

Nothing. Everything i wanted to do with a backup solution, Vinchin provided for. Very happy with thin product as a backup solution for XenServer.

### "Solid Multi-Hypervisor Backup That Actually Works for Proxmox and XCP-ng"

March 18, 2026

5.0

Overall, Vinchin has been a solid, no-nonsense tool for managing our hybrid environment, especially since it handles Proxmox and XCP-ng natively without the usual agent-pushing headaches. It’s reliable and the 'Instant VM Recovery' is a massive stress-reliever during outages, though it still feels like a work in progress when it comes to Microsoft 365 and deep API automation. It’s not perfect, but for on-prem virtualization and disaster recovery, it definitely gets the job done without overcomplicating things.

Pros

The best part is definitely the native, agentless support for multiple hypervisors like Proxmox and XCP-ng all in one console. It saves me from the headache of managing agents across different platforms, and the Instant VM Recovery actually works as advertised, I can get a failed VM back online directly from the backup storage in under two minutes when things go sideways.

Cons

The Microsoft 365 integration feels a bit half-baked compared to its solid on-prem performance, and it's annoying that physical server backups still require OS-level agents. Also, the API documentation isn't quite there yet, which makes custom DevOps automation more of a chore than it should be.
