### "I'm beyond impressed!"

November 18, 2021

5.0

Scrivener is my go-to app for writing my novels and screenplays. It allows me to organize all of my work in one place, and with the ability to save different drafts, I never have to worry about losing anything. With Scrivener, I can easily find the information I need. The interface is intuitive and easy to understand, and it is always available on all of my devices.

Pros

The organisational capabilities of both writing and research are invaluable. And the compile feature, once you get it set up, is astonishingly powerful and, with a bit of work, as good as Vellum.

Cons

It can take a while to learn Scrivener's unique features, but if you take the time, you'll find there's a lot more going on than you see at first. If there's one thing that bugs me is that the compile functions in Scrivener 3 are difficult compared to version 2.

### "Every writer needs this software "

September 27, 2024

5.0

I love it. It’s so helpful once you get the hang of it.

Pros

I was having trouble with the pace of my books and this software has helped me so much. I’m always top ten in my genre with every release now.

Cons

I wish the proofreading was more thorough. It catches misspelling but not grammar. I wish it had that so I don’t have to scan my document with additional software.

### "Okay for Writing, Not Good for Worldbuilding"

January 6, 2025

3.0

I've spent a lot of time using Scrivener to organize my stories and worldbuilding. Although I did appreciate the layout in terms of being able to readily access written documents, I got frustrated with the formatting abilities and eventually chose to use Evernote. Another drawback with Scrivener is the lack of cloud syncing. Because I only could access the file on one computer, I had to transfer ideas from other sources, such as Google Tasks, into the scrivener file on that specific computer. It would have been easier if I could access Scrivener online, so I didn't have to keep transferring notes over to the file.

Pros

My favorite part about Scrivener is that you can access your notes side by side. It's easy to put your different notes in folders and easy to organize the different pages. This makes it a better choice than Microsoft Word or a similar program for writing stories.

Cons

I did not like the formatting at all in Scrivener. I had used Scrivener for writing for a while, but I stopped because the ability to format text was strange. I wanted to use it for world-building documents, which requires a variety of text (bold, underline, bullet points, etc.). However, in Scrivener, the indents were off and the inserted tables hard to work with. The bullet points would line up with the left side of the title text which didn't look right. The final product didn't look as good as it does in other programs such as Microsoft Word or Evernote.

### "Nothing Beats Scrivener for Writers"

June 28, 2022

5.0

Pros

Scrivener is endlessly flexible, fitting any way you can think of to help you write the best prose you possibly can and print it in just about any way you may need, including producing files suitable for publication in online bookstores such as Amazon. The complexity does, however, make the program intimidating to beginning users. It helps if a user makes a conscious decision to learn and use only the bare bones at first, but it can be difficult to figure out what bare bones to use and where they are. It helps a lot, though, that Googling Scrivener along with a function of the program will produce dozens of how-to articles. After all, Scrivener is designed for writers, and a good number of them write about Scrivener!

Cons

I reluctantly admit that I haven't yet talked myself into tackling the learning curve on printing out anything but the simplest of documents from Scrivener. I'm sure it was worth it to many writers in the past who needed to produce publication-ready manuscripts, but these days Vellum is available for the Mac and Atticus can be bought for either Apple or Windows computers. Both are much easier to use.

### "Great for managing writing and research projects "

May 26, 2022

5.0

My overall experience with Scrivener is positive. I like that it's not a subscriber-based application, and I can access it on both my desktop and iOS devices.

Pros

I've used Scrivener for several years for my long-form writing projects. What I like about it most is that it enables me to manage my writing, research, and ideas all in one place. I can organize my research and track notes, store my drafts and ideas, and save them all in one place. When the developers created an iOS version of Scrivener, it enabled me to read my writing on my iPad as if I were reading on printed paper. Scrivener has tons of features, but I particularly like the Typewriter Mode feature that keeps the line of text in a fixed position on my screen so I don't have to keep scrolling up as I type. The ability to filter sections and drafts of writing is also helpful. I can label sections of writing any way I want. And finally, Scrivener also allows for exporting documents to various formats, including ePub. Scrivener takes a while to learn, but it's highly useful for serious writers.

Cons

The export features are complicated, but there's plenty of documentation to show to use it.

### "Productivity and focus booster"

June 27, 2022

5.0

Pros

Scrivener is without a doubt one of the richest app function-wise on the. market. It is actually so powerful and rich that most of its functions require extensive research. It is so powerful that if you are thinking of a function you need, Scrivener will most probably have it – you just need to look for it.

Cons

What I don't like about it is mostly related to the abundance and wealth of options it offers. The learning curve is really a long one and it requires research and finding out in order to really discover every single option there is.

### "Complex but powerful product"

June 21, 2022

5.0

It's a complex bit of software. It's more oriented toward one purpose, that being preparing a book for publication. I tried using it as a notebook. Kinda maybe could work, but something online like Notion might be better.

Pros

This product will help you lay out something for publication. Keep all your research straight in the same application.

Cons

For some reason, it keeps requiring me to re-enter my activation code. It's like, guys, I bought this. It's mine. Stop this nonsense.

### "Best for newbies and NaNoWriMo!"

February 11, 2021

5.0

Helping me write without distraction, motivating me to complete NaNoWriMo and any other projects within Scrivener.

Pros

Ease of use is what I loved the most, it was super easy to set up and I was writing within a few minutes. I also liked being able to set up a word count per session as well as per document, which helped enormously for NaNoWriMo when you had to complete so many words a day for the month!

Cons

### "Scrivener Is Okay, But That's Not Enough"

January 16, 2025

3.0

I did complete 2 books on it, but the 4 works in progress remained in a state of limbo until I opted for another writing app. I'd say that, for me, Scrivener was great 25% of the time, so-so 50% of the time, and a pain to deal with 25% of the time. Enough to get me through 2 books, not enough to make me stay. I may try it again if I get a free copy, but not until them

Pros

It does a wonderful job of guiding a novice writer to understand the structure of fiction and non-fiction. The app helps to organize ideas, concepts, research, and notes, plus it supports multiple editing passes, a must for truly improving your writing.

Cons

If your solution takes a one-hour to video to explain its best usage, that's a problem. I came to Scrivener having written well over 2 million published words, and while other pro writers swear by it, I often found myself swearing at it.

### "Scrivener makes creative writing projects easier to visualize, plan, and edit"

March 26, 2025

5.0

Love it. I use it for all my creative writing projects - both fiction and non-fiction. I'm currently using it to draft out my third book.

Pros

I really love the cork board features. It makes it so easy to move pieces of text or themes around so that you can get a sense of how everything fits together and flows. Also love how easy it is to customize your binder with different folders for different types of research so that you can keep everything in one binder while still having a clear sense of what your word count is on the main draft.

Cons

I don't find it easy to work with images in Scrivener. Inserting images straight into a draft leads to a massive file size on compile, with no easy way to resize images straight in the draft in ways that commensurately reduces the size of the image file. There are work-arounds for this, but they feel a bit fiddly.

### "Amazing Software for "Re-writers""

July 20, 2020

4.0

Getting a software of this level for writing an essay or a blog post is an overkill. But anyone who is dealing with writing thousands and thousands of words that are at some point supposed to make a coherent whole, are likely to encounter blocks along the way that will just end up feeling overwhelmed. Writing is ultimately about re-writing, writing drafts fast and then writing even better drafts, and being a good editor when it is time to take a more critical look at your work and "to kill your darlings" as \[SENSITIVE CONTENT HIDDEN\] calls it. Scrivener makes this process easier. It's suitable for people who write for a living or create so much written content that at some point in their lives they have read a style manual to become better at what they do. It may be once-in-a-lifetime project such as a thesis or a writing career, but if you are writing longer texts (and preferably are a Mac user), this is a software to check out.

Pros

Scrivener can be a great choice for those of us who are always unhappy with their writing and churn out draft after draft, rearrange paragraphs endlessly, outline meticulously, and are just get too obsessive-compulsive about the quality of their work. It simply helps to produce better work faster and get over the so-called "writer's block," which is the too-often-result of perfectionism. The benefits of Scrivener are fairly simple. In many ways it's more comparable to OneNote than Microsoft Word as the user is not limited to a page view. Behind the screens, Scrivener stores text as simple RTF files that the user can splice and dice into smaller pieces of text like "notes" that can be arranged and rearranged as the user wants. But unlike in OneNote, the writer can view multiple "notes" at the same time, which makes it possible to view your work as a complete text. And to someone like me who gets distracted, easily, this simple feature was revolutionary. I could "eat my elephant" in very small chunks and hide the rest of the text but with a few clicks review the whole. Scrivener also has a very powerful outline view, which makes it very easy to visualize even whole book projects. It has a Kanban-like feature called corkboard that allows users to add descriptions to chapters or paragraphs in order to create a more coherent large text project. Writing statistics allow gamification and myriad custom metadata options enable bending the software to your personal writing habits.

Cons

I am a Windows user and Scrivener's team are clearly putting Mac users first. Scrivener 3.0's Mac version was made available in 2017 while Microsoft users are still in version 1.97. The latest version was initially promised to be ready for Windows users in late 2018, but after multiple delays it's now clear that the project is anything but a priority—which, sadly, made me eventually turn away from the software as for Windows users it's simply out of date with no light at the end of the tunnel.

### "Best Writing Software I’ve Used"

February 16, 2023

5.0

Scrivener has revolutionised the way I write. It has made the writing process painless. Yes, it took me a while to get to grips with all its functionality, but it is now second nature. This software is easy to use and I would recommend it to any writer thinking about starting out. It’s the best money I ever spent. This however is an annoyance, not a deal breaker.

Pros

Scrivener has revolutionised my writing practice. As a planner, I have used Scrivener to plan and write my novels over the past couple of years. (I have recently moved away from using it on the planning side as I want the space I was using for editing purposes as it will be more beneficial) But until recently it has been my one stop shop!Scriveners set up is perfect for writing in scenes or chapters, and allows you to move these around easily with its drag and drop functionality. The fact you can keep track of all your scenes on the left hand side of the screen makes flipping backwards and forwards a simple task when you are writing and want to check up on something. The synopsis and document notes aspect and reporting tools also help with keeping my on track and allow me to keep note of important items that I know I may need later. It is a one stop shop. Finally the ease with which I can compile a complete novel at the end is priceless for the editing process.

Cons

It took a little bit of time to set up in a way I was comfortable with, but once I found that, I haven’t looked back. The only other downside is it doesn’t offer spell check in British English as far as I can see. I have to use alternative software to capture my spelling errors and in the mean time I am left with red underlines I have to ignore.

### "Hands on one of the best products for writers, be that plain content writing, scripting or for games"

May 24, 2020

5.0

Scrivener is definitely the best software to use on an Apple device if you're serious about writing. The price of 53 euros (at the time of writing this review) might seem a bit much for upcoming writers but it's really worth it. It can be used for content writing and up to game design. No way Word could organize things as good as Scrivener. I'm just kinda sad the Windows version is so limited.

Pros

The program is probably the best software to use as a writer. It's being used in the industry for quite some time. It's great to track your progress, organize things such as research, references, maps, locations, etc. Compared to usual writing in other programs such as Word or OpenOffice, here you won't have to deal with distractions and with alt tabbing to check references in folders. Dark mode is a super great feature, really saves me some eye migraines. It has a lot of export options which makes very easy the porting of files for say, publishing on Amazon. Synchronization is top notch, you can start off on your computer and switch to your mobile device and back to the computer. It's using dropbox. Saves happen every few seconds so your work won't be lost if you have some technical difficulties.

Cons

The Windows version was lacking a lot compared to the Apple version last time I tried (2018). It's was painful to try it, quite sad actually. Syncing can be a bit troublesome since the program doesnt check if you closed the program before swapping to another device, however it saves the conflicting files. If you own an old Mac you cannot sync to your devices. You can upload and import them but it's a bit clunky.

### "Scrivener is one of the best programs for writers"

January 11, 2023

5.0

Excellent.

Pros

It is a program with multiple functionalities and options that is designed to be used according to the needs that we writers have. Once you start using it, you realize that Word is much worse in this regard. It allows you to organize the books by chapters and scenes, in addition to showing organization cards. Another feature that I love is that it allows you to keep track of daily writing goals. It also allows you to save previous versions and go back to them if necessary. Another of my favorite options, and one that I discovered not so long ago, is the possibility for the program to mark the different versions by color. Thus, when you are with a new version, you can see what you have added. Furthermore, you can always remove this and see the typical black text again. By the way, this option is only for viewing, and not for printing. It is very useful.

Cons

There are few failures or drawbacks that I see in this program. One may be the learning curve to learn to do everything you can do with it. I recommend watching some basic video tutorials and start using it as soon as possible. As you use it more, then it's good to learn new features. Another possible disadvantage that I see to the program is that, at least in Spanish, the spell checker is quite basic. Furthermore, it doesn't have a thesaurus to use as you type. This is the only feature that World is better at.

### "Awesome for Organizing Big Creative Projects "

January 15, 2019

4.0

I was trying to write a novel and needed a way to see the "big picture" of the plot without getting bogged down by sentences. Scrivener's features made it easy to focus on structure, which was a huge help!

Pros

I started using Scrivener two years ago, when I was working on a novel that had major issues with structure. Scrivener made it very easy to see the big picture and move scenes around to achieve a better arc and pace. I really like the ability to zoom out and view the "cork board" which mimics index cards on a wall, one for each scene or chapter. This let me look at the big picture and shift things around without getting bogged down in the pages. That kind of focus was essential to fixes the issues in my draft and getting it in decent shape! I also like the ability to split a screen, so I can view the scene I'm working on and another page, like an outline, on simultaneously.

Cons

There is a little bit of a learning curve and it took me about 5 or 6 hours to go through the tutorial and really get a hang of the software. Looking back, this was a very small investment of time considering how much time Scrivener has saved me over the years. In the moment, however, it felt like a bit of a drag and a time I could have spent actually writing. My advice: power through it!

### "Focus on the end result"

May 5, 2020

5.0

My experience with Scrivener is great. Although it is difficult to set up the compilation to provide the document desired formatting, once it is done it can be reused time and again without worrying. The end result is guaranteed to fit the configuration. Great if you are copywriting to the same sources. All you need to focus is on the writing and then just hit the compile button to have a ready paper to send to the editors.

Pros

Scrivener allows the writers (technical writers, academic writers or novelists) to focus on the activity itself with or without previous planning and worry about the publishing result later. This greatly improves the writing process.

Cons

Configuring the document compilation to provide the desired end result is somewhat difficult and obscure, sometimes demanding a set of trials and errors to get that detail right.

Reason for choosing Scrivener

The end document production once the document format is properly configured is easier than using the other considered tools.

Pros

Scrivener keeps everything organized for me, something that makes my writing more enjoyable, efficient, and effective. Scrivener has been integral to my writing process from conceptualization, to preparation, and execution. ### "The very best of tools for writers"

June 4, 2019

5.0

Just buy it or at least trial it. I use it for long books, articles, and pretty much everything. I love it. Nothing I've found comes close. I'm using version 3.0 on a Mac btw but the Windows version also gets good reviews.

Pros

I like pretty much everything about this software. It's a clean interface with a relatively easy learning curve. You can just start with it from day one and learn the various features (and there are many) as and when you need them. The main thing I like however is the way I can structure a long document, move sections around, look at the overview/abstract of each section, and quickly navigate to any part. It helps too that it's easy to have two different views open side by side. I also like the ability to have a separate research/notes section which I can structure to parallel the body of the document.

Cons

Not much to dislike. I found the integration with Grammarly and Hemingway a bit clunky but since moving to ProWriting Aid, advanced editing has become pretty much seamless. Outputting the finished product to pdf, Word or whatever takes a bit of learning but to be fair, that is because it is so customisable.

### "Scrivener almost deleted my entire book"

October 12, 2020

2.0

I would say it is a great tool for figuring out what chapters go where. I would say it is awful in every other way. I would not recommend this to my closest friend unless Scrivener finally fixes these bugs. It is a program that I feel has not been updated SINCE the 90s.

Pros

What I do like about the program is it is wonderful to piece together and move around your chapter sections. For my upcoming book Goddess Protocols: A beginners guide to ageless beauty, I struggled with what sections should come first. In Office word you would have to cut and paste, and it would be difficult to see the layout. With Scrivener, it was easy to move chapters and sections around to get the perfect balance between words per chapter.

Cons

I use Windows, and for the first few days as I was cutting and pasting from word things worked great. Then the bugs started to occur. The first one was that it would freeze for 5 minutes at a time, which reminded me of when I was using the internet in the 90s, it was that slow. The second one was when I went to save the doc even though it said completed, it hadn't. So this meant all the work I had done that day was deleted. The third issue was when I loaded some photos into one of the chapters, and it completely froze again. The last issue was an error came up and the program just imploded. Fortunately right before that I had made 2 backups on a usb and my external hard drive.

### "Great writer's tool"

November 11, 2018

4.0

While there is a huge learning curve with this software, I love that it keeps everything I need in one document for my novels. Gone are the days of multiple documents and worrying about keeping things organized. This software keeps everything in one document which is amazing. Once I have more time to actually sit down and watch the various tutorials, I hope to be able to utilize even more of the software's features. I think if there were better tutorials to help people get started, it would help a lot. I originally used the tutorial and almost gave up on the software until I found some better tutorials online and through Youtube.

Pros

I love that it allows me to not only section out chapters, but also scenes within the chapter. It also gives me the option to keep characters, locations, and all sorts of notes in one document.

Cons

Compiling correctly can be a giant pain. It took a lot of time to get the basics down. I have yet to master all the options that the software offers because of the complexity. It also offers various formatting options, but again, learning all of these options takes a lot of time and effort.

### "My writing companion for research and compilation."

June 23, 2023

5.0

I began using Scrivener at least five years ago and have enjoyed the whole experience. It is my go-to tool for gathering and compiling information. I am an information junky, and Scrivener is my friend.

Pros

I love how I can collect research and easily access it for use in my writing projects. I can even save webpages and videos with the project!

Cons

I have not found anything I don't like about Scrivener. I do not know of any better research and writing tool.

### "The ultimate writing software for authors, publishers and creative writers"

February 9, 2019

5.0

Scrivener has made it really easy to work on novels, though it can be used for any kind of writing.

Pros

Scrivener is one of the few word processors that is designed with authors in mind. Everything is focused around making the creative writing process easier and getting your document into publishing-ready format simple instead of complicated. Instead of writing continuously in a never-ending document that has to be loaded every time you open it up, Scrivener allows you to break out your work into separate groups and individual components (think chapters and scenes). This means you only need to load exactly what you're working on at the moment. All of these components can be dragged and dropped and re-arranged however you like at any time, which makes changing the organization of your work a snap. Scrivener contains many useful tools like a sticky word and character counter, the ability to switch the view on your project between a document, corkboard, or outline format no matter which way you actually wrote it, and goal setting, tracking and analytic tools to keep you on target.

Cons

The only thing I wish they had was a cloud version that could be accessed on other PCs or my phone, for when I have "lightning strike" and I want to work on my project but I'm not at my home computer.

### "A great way of organizing text-based projects and research"

February 8, 2021

5.0

Very positive. I have used it for several years and I really enjoy it.

Pros

It features a solid set of options and functions to organize, create, and publish text-based work, whether it's a publication, the framework for a website's content, or projects that have a lot of documentation.

Cons

Scrivener isn't always intuitive with its features. You sometimes have to do some research online to find how to do things and even then, it takes a little work to get things going the way they should.

Reason for choosing Scrivener

It's cheaper.
