Technology Integrator Education Management Used the software for: 2+ years ### "Top of the Line Chromebook Monitoring Solution" May 28, 2019 5.0 We have had great success in our 1:1 program with GoGuardian. We have been able to reach out to families when a child was endangered, and our staff is feeling very comfortable using devices in the classroom. Pros GoGuardian provides many different features that make implementing a 1:1 Chromebook program fairly easy. The filtering solution is fairly quick and easy to learn and can work off-site. They also have Smart Alerts which notifies us when a student is doing something that could cause self-harm or is looking at pornography. Lastly, the teacher portal allows teachers to monitor and easily step in to help students stay engaged. Cons The teacher side of things could use some improvements in the way that it interacts with the Chromebooks, although this might require a different type of installation. It would be great to get a constant live snapshot of Chromebook devices rather than just the current tab. Review Source JA Jeff A. Pros GoGuardian is extremely user friendly. I sent one text to a teacher saying, go to this site and login this way. I then stopped in an hour later and she was chatting with students, setting up scenes, locking kids out of their devices. She needed no training. BUT if there is a need, they also have amazing tutorials to show how to do things. Cons Its great, but we do seem to have students that can figure out ways around it. September 3, 2026 1.0 Pros There is nothing good about GoGuardian, at least from a student's perspective, and I am not one of the students who is constantly playing games on my computer or looking at dumb shit either. I would just like to be able to use my school computer to do research without having all of the websites that I need to use being blocked by GoGuardian. Cons This is absolutely ludicrous and inconvenient for everyone involved. The way it is designed is highly agitating due to the fact that over 90% of websites are banned. As a student who has to research certain topics then to be doing that said reasherch then I cannot even accsess GOVERNMENT websites to read policies from a reliable resource that isn't AI. December 5, 2019 5.0 GoGuardian Teacher has been a great product and is loved by our teachers. They can choose to monitor or restrict Chromebooks. We use GoGuardian Admin to monitor Smart Alerts and track lost Chromebooks. Pros GoGuardian gives you the ability to easily manage your Chromebooks in the classroom. It allows our teachers the freedom to teach instead of monitoring devices. Cons There is not much to dislike. They recently added a feature to allow Admins to log in as teachers to troubleshoot issues. That was a previous complaint that has now been addressed. THe ability to add and remove sites from the restriction lists is simple and intuitive. We also use the Teach classroom monitoring product that has made a sweeping difference in the classrooms . Cons the cost feels high when first deciding to use the products. but after using for a couple years i cant imagine a better implementation. I love that I have the control and ability to close out any tabs which should not be open at a given time. Being able to send an announcement to all of my students at once is great when my class blocks end. I also LOVE the new features GoGuardian has created: audio calls and presentation mode. The reports at the end of each class are also amazing. You can see a timeline with what each student was doing at a given time and for how long. All of these features are a must during a normal school year, not to mention a remote one! Cons There are been some issues with the system status as of lately. With remote teaching right now this has essentially left me flying blind- especially when I cannot see my student's computers or see who is online. Review Source Nolan W. I can monitor my students without bothering them via looking over their shoulder. I can also be more informed as to what they are doing, how much time they spent on websites, and GoGuardian tells me what sites they visited. GoGuardian is a great classroom resource. Pros The best thing about GoGuardian is just how effective it is. With other computer-monitoring programs, students had to sign into it and, usually, they had easy ways of tricking the system. GoGuardian allows me to monitor, mentor, and alter student direction on their individual computers from the ease of my chair. Cons Overall, there is very little that I didn't find useful about GoGuardian. As a teacher, the price was right for me (free for teachers; I am not entirely sure if my school corporation pays for it). Even though it's not as user-friendly as some other software, I do think it is the best tool you have to make sure students are staying on track. You can close tabs if they've gone to a game or website they aren't supposed to be on, you can chat separately with them or send an Announcement to everyone, you can create different "scenes" that block some websites but let through others. It's really a great way to let students work without you peering over their shoulders constantly. Pros I love that I can easily check a student's progress and chat with them. I love user-friendly software, and it's pretty easy. Cons Not everything is user-friendly, you have to click around a bit to figure out how to create scenes and such. Review Source MH Mark H. January 14, 2023 5.0 Before GoGuardian, our monitoring system was standing in the back of the room and watching over the students' shoulders. One of my colleagues even went so far as to install angled mirrors to see student activity on the devices. It was very low-tech and not very effective.GoGuardian is a game changer. I now have a complete and efficient system that enables me to effectively monitor and support student progress. Pros I really like how easy GoGuardian is to use. I just sign on with my google account, choose my classes, and then I am able to monitor student activity and progress. I also like the way that I can see various types of data pertaining to student activity...from actual websites visited, time browsing and actual time on task. I can also see a timeline of the student activity and I have a record of the timeline. Cons I would really like to have a button or quick switch to lock all devices. I especially like to monitor students when they are typing essays. I can read it quickly and send a chat message with feedback. I also like the chat feature because I am able to discreetly communicate with students about their work or lack thereof. I also like the reports that generate when the session ends. I like that I can see what websites students visited while on the computer. Cons One thing I do not like about GoGuardian is that it lets students know when I turn it on. Of course, when they know that I am looking they change the page so I cannot see what they were doing. I would like to see who is consistently following the rules without giving notice that I am checking. Also, I don't like that workarounds exist so that students can do things which will not show up on the GoGuardian screen. Overall classroom safety has been improved and students stay focused on the tasks at hand. Pros Before using GoGuardian, it was nearly impossible to monitor what students were accessing on their computers. Even if I continuously walked around the room monitoring, by the time I reached their desks they'd simply close the tab, or close the computer. Making accusations when I suspect misbehavior isn't an option. If I can simply look at my computer monitor and quickly give students a warning, the situation is easily resolved. It's a game-changer. Cons At this point there's nothing I dislike about GoGuardian. I'm not the district decision maker for purchases, so my input, even when asked, was never taken into consideration. I thought another product may have serviced our needs better. Pros I like the ability to set up scenes that attempt to control the webpages that students have access to in the classroom. I also like the ability to screenshot what pages the students are engaged in if they are off-task. Cons I dislike the fact that there are too many work-arounds to where students can by-pass the GoGuardian protections. There are numerous videos on YouTube that show how to get around their software. I'm also not a fan of the "chat" feature in GoGuardian. Only being able to have canned responses is not effective when trying to communicate with a student subtly, in my opinion. It easily allow you to block websites from students and keep them on task. As a one-to-one device school this feature is very helpful. Pros I like that I can see all the students screens in my "classroom" at the same time. The chat feature is very useful during virtual learning so students can ask a question without speaking to the whole class. The announcement feature is amazing for student engagement and determining if a student is at their computer screen (student needs to click to get back to their work). Cons I wish that a noise was made if a student sends a chat. Teaching remote students and in person students at the same time means that I rely on noises to come back to my student if someone needs help. We have been able to assist students if they are stuck during instruction. We are able to guide the students to get to the correct website or app on their Chromebook. It has also been really helpful with class management during online learning because we can restrict access to website that the students don't need to using during instruction. Pros It has allowed me to be able to help my students during remote learning. After completing the training, it was pretty easy to use the software in the classroom and during remote instruction. I was most excited about being able to put website restrictions on the student's Chromebooks. It was helpful because the students can get easily distracted with Youtube, Netflix and other websites instead of focusing on their schoolwork. I liked that I could restrict websites during school hours and allow access for the evening. Cons The training was a little long. It also would have been helpful to have an interactive training. This may be a district training decision to have only online training. I felt that I would have understood more if I was able to set up GoGuardian and use it during the training sessions. The ability to create a dual policy that switches to a slightly relaxed mode off campus allows parents to feel secure and students some extra freedom when away from school. Pros We had used a competitors product for several years prior to switching to this one. I have found GoGuardian to have a much better track record with accurately filtering category based items. The interface, especially the 2.0, is much improved and allows you to quickly find what you're looking for. They are constantly adding and improving. Cons I have not found anything I dislike. There are small interface tweaks I would like to see, but these are trivial items. They do have a feature request board, and they do seem to implement the top requested items. GoGuardian serves to keep students on task by allowing a teacher or administrator the ability to control web access for a specific class or group. The software also allows the teacher to see in real time what all the students are seeing on their screens and to receive useful reports on student activity. Cons It is not as intuitive and easy to learn as I would have liked and at times there are conflicts between the different administrators using the system at the same time. It really keeps students on task. Students are less likely to search for non-approved material knowing I have access to their timeline. Pros I love being able to restrict certain sites. I love being able to allow only approved sites for students to browse. This eliminates students getting off task and forces them to be only on approved sites. I also like the ability to screenshot student screens. If a student is on a questionable site, it's great to have proof in case problems arise. I also like the ability to look at a student's timeline. Cons I wish there was a way to block "unblocked" sites. Unfortunately some sites get through the system and appear to be google. Teachers can easily set up classes how they see fit. They can block all sites, except what the teacher wants them on. They can also keep it open, and just block things like games, youtube, etc. Administrators also get alerts for inappropriate activity. There is a feature called the "penalty box" which can be set up so they can only go on approved sites. This is a great deterrent for inappropriate use of the device. You can also have different settings at school and at home. This is nice if you want to block social media at school, but allow them to use it on their own time. Pros GoGuardian makes it easy to block sites and manage classes to keep students on task during the day. Cons Besides our middle school Chromebook 1:1 program, we also have 1:1 program with MacBook Air's. There is no good way to utilize GoGuardian for the Mac's in our environment. We have been told they are working on this though.
