And the player licenses support android, which is easy to get a hold of compatible boxes. Pros I was able to set up the CMS to run locally. I don't have to perpetually pay a subscription fee in order to use the system. Cons Theres no built-in system to use hdmi-cec to turn on/turn off TVs. It would be a simple feature to add for the xibo player. I had to spend time creating a custom solution to do the same thing with scripts. The project quickly scaled up in both users and connected displays. We now have over 120 users managing more than 500 operational screens across diverse sectors like industry, retail, and transportation. Screen Management is a breeze. The wide variety of Xibo players allows us to mix different screen brands and seamlessly migrate from other solutions. Server provisioning is fast and straightforward using Docker on-premise, but Xibo also offers highly efficient and affordable SaaS options. Whether you choose cloud or self-hosted, their Customer Support is top-notch. It is a reliable, robust, and highly cost-effective solution. Pros What I appreciate the most is the overall Ease of Use and how quickly you can get the system into production. The learning curve is short for anyone willing to spend a little time on it, and end-users pick it up very fast. Xibo offers incredible Customization Options; being open-source, there are no limits when it comes to interconnecting real-time databases and displaying dynamic production flows. It is truly limitless. Additionally, the Customer Support is highly responsive, and the development team is deeply involved when it comes to feedback and integrating new features. When you look at the features provided compared to proprietary alternatives, the Value for Money is unbeatable. There are now many Xibo integrators all over the world, which makes Xibo a trusted player in this market. Cons Since this project started back in 2009, my main complaint a year ago would have been the User Interface, which felt a bit dated. However, with the new version 4.5, they have completely overhauled the UX/UI, and I truly love the product now. The image creation applet contains a good selection of tools. The whole program contains an amount of customization and end user access that is unparalleled in the software space, letting us tweak anything we like to make it work. Cons The interface is unbelivebly confusing, with settings and features that relate to eachother in completely different areas. To just change the .jpg for one screen that only displays said .jpg with no changes takes at minimum 4 different menus, plus submenus, and the delay between applying it and receiving confirmation that it is displaying is measured in 10's of minutes, if it reports correctly at all. We are always expanding the use of it and pushing out more screens. We are also now looking to push this out into our MAT. Pros I like how there is both a cloud and on-premise CMS option rather than forcing down just the one route. This helps keep costs low as well as allows for easy scalability. Cons The user permissions I do find are a little granular and not overly easy to manage when needing to setup a new user or when adding in a new folder having to apply the permissions there. IT Support Engineer Information Technology and Services Used the software for: 2+ years ### "Xibo at Amazon Corporate IT" October 6, 2025 5.0 Xibo did the job, we were able to have a source for site content and to be able to relay the information to our sites as soon as the event popped up. Sadly, after Covid-19 the project came to a halt and was disbanded. Another organization went with a much more expensive solution to provide digital signage to all kitchen TVs to and primary floor TV elevators the following years after Covid-19. During our time with Xibo, we enjoyed the flexibility as well as the open ended interface to create content. There were so many in-house Amazon teams trying to create home brew digital signage, but could not come close to the simplicity and fulfill IT's requirement needs. I was able to administrate, design digital content, as well as deploy hardware across my sites with minimal effort once the initial setup was done right. Pros We used XIbo in 2016-2019 to help add digital signage to our IT offices. To provide information and current events to our customers. We deployed this over 30 different sites/screens at the time and we enjoyed the management features as well as the ability to sideload this particular piece of software into almost any android device. At the time, we chose a FireStick TV. We also deployed this to a Consumer Engagement business group to help them provide current information to their organization on 12, 4k TV screens. At the time, the Firestick TVs had limitations to their memory and random firmware updates would wrestle control of the Xibo display screen. With this issue, we purchased the DS devices hardware to deploy across the 12 screens. No issues, and management and licensing were easy as well as the hardware swap. After beta-testing these 12 DS devices we deployed it to the rest of our organizations 30 sites, getting rid of the Firestick TVs. Cons At the time, the Management of licenses and the site management/administration of xibo devices were separate accounts. It was sometimes difficult to know if we have went over our device license at the time. Alternatives considered [Amazon S3](https://www.capterra.com/p/174285/Amazon-S3/) Reason for choosing Xibo Didn't use Amazon S3 as the above field wont let us free form the text. There were MANY Amazon home brew products that just did not work for us. All of those products came and went and were discarded. It might seem complicated at first, but once you learn the ropes, you'll love how many things you can do. Allso it's very affordable, having an option to go with them. or host it yourself is a big deal for many small companies that are new in the media field. Cons Early days there were a lot of unexplained bugs with no solutions so you had to have some workarounds. The longer they're on the market, the fewer you'll see. The bad thing is that these bugs/limitations were out in the open for years, not really treated as critical. Or they were critical, just too big to tackle quickly. However, the learning curve is in reality longer than it may appear at first glance. Most of the issues we had to solve in real deployments did not originate in CMS or Client, but were instead purely Android or network-related matters. Pros In terms of price/performance ratio it is absolutely outstanding. The platform is very feature-rich and in our experience most users, even after a year, still do not take full advantage of everything it offers – yet it already covers practically all their real-world needs and requests. Cons We encountered poorly documented API. While it seemed that Swagger would be sufficient, in practice we were pushed into using undocumented functions. Another significant issue is the logging system. The use of logs of various types is far from intuitive. In our case, especially reports from ExoPlayer and their correct interpretation are a nightmare. Honestly, the overall approach to log organization is not good – I cannot say how to do it properly, but I know I dread dealing with it. Ideally, something like a built-in interpreter or even a connection to an LLM that could make logs more useful would be a real improvement. I use it for digital signage at conferences and use pocket PC's to run the Xibo Windows client. The layout tool is easy, the media handling is intuitive and the scheduling is robust. My largest deployment was 41 digital signs at the American Institute of Architecture San Francisco meeting in 2023. Pros The CMS is very powerful. It is easy to create dynamic signage. Also, the scheduling has been able to handle any of my needs. Cons The only real con is when it looses internet connectivity. When this happens, the windows client simply shows the Xibo splash page.
