It continiously improves with more features and stability updates and the team are very helpful if you ever need support. I use a selfhost version that runs without any hiccups effortlessly. It is a set and forget platform that you will not worry about missing a beat. Pros Xibo is a fantastic digital signage platform that offers flexibilty with cloud hosting and self-hosted version on various platforms. It offers great features, solid documentation and support if needed all at a good value. Cons There is a bit of a learning curve to it when you are new to the platform. However, there are good documentations to guide you through your setup. September 23, 2025 5.0 I've been in digital signage since 2002, I've used many different CMS over the years and factoring all the variables in such as Price, Features, security, hardware compatibility etc. there is no better use of money than moving to a xibo platform. Pros My favorite part about xibo is the open-source code. Most CMS platforms would charge thousands of dollars to customize the UI to your preferences, if they'd do it at all. With xibo it can be done extremely easy by any developer. Their documentation is robust and easy for most to follow. Their openness to new and different ideas from the community of users makes their product feature set more impressive with each release Cons The most common complaint I hear from our customers and internal people using xibo is that the interface looks very outdated, and most find it hard to use. There are a lot of buttons that you can click on and the average user doesn't bother to read the instruction xibo has posted and get frustrated. It does everything I need for screen scheduling and layout control, and the fact that it’s self-hosted gives full peace of mind. A few usability improvements would make it even better, but overall it’s a reliable platform I would recommend. Pros Xibo is surprisingly easy to get started with. I really appreciated how straightforward it was to schedule content and organize layouts without needing to be a designer or developer. Xibo is cost-effective compared to other digital signage solutions and offers strong functionality even in its free/self-hosted version. Centralized control of multiple screens is convenient once everything is configured. Being self-hosted gives full control over data and network access, which is a plus for secure environments. IT Support Engineer Information Technology and Services Used the software for: 2+ years ### "Xibo at Amazon Corporate IT" October 6, 2025 5.0 Xibo did the job, we were able to have a source for site content and to be able to relay the information to our sites as soon as the event popped up. Sadly, after Covid-19 the project came to a halt and was disbanded. Another organization went with a much more expensive solution to provide digital signage to all kitchen TVs to and primary floor TV elevators the following years after Covid-19. During our time with Xibo, we enjoyed the flexibility as well as the open ended interface to create content. There were so many in-house Amazon teams trying to create home brew digital signage, but could not come close to the simplicity and fulfill IT's requirement needs. I was able to administrate, design digital content, as well as deploy hardware across my sites with minimal effort once the initial setup was done right. Pros We used XIbo in 2016-2019 to help add digital signage to our IT offices. To provide information and current events to our customers. We deployed this over 30 different sites/screens at the time and we enjoyed the management features as well as the ability to sideload this particular piece of software into almost any android device. At the time, we chose a FireStick TV. We also deployed this to a Consumer Engagement business group to help them provide current information to their organization on 12, 4k TV screens. At the time, the Firestick TVs had limitations to their memory and random firmware updates would wrestle control of the Xibo display screen. With this issue, we purchased the DS devices hardware to deploy across the 12 screens. No issues, and management and licensing were easy as well as the hardware swap. After beta-testing these 12 DS devices we deployed it to the rest of our organizations 30 sites, getting rid of the Firestick TVs. Cons At the time, the Management of licenses and the site management/administration of xibo devices were separate accounts. It was sometimes difficult to know if we have went over our device license at the time. There were MANY Amazon home brew products that just did not work for us. All of those products came and went and were discarded. It’s stable, adaptable, and supported by an active community. We’ve been able to deliver professional and engaging content with minimal maintenance. I love how easy it is to design, schedule, and manage content across multiple screens. The layout designer and playlist features make creating dynamic visual experiences effortless. September 9, 2025 5.0 I've been using self-hosted Xibo since the early (v1.2 via LaunchPad) days in a few of our local gyms, dance studio, karate school, sports venue and sports café - for promotions, menu's, live viewing of classes and as a modern alternative to printed signage for sponsors. Even though there was no money to be made of me, \[sensitive content hidden\] always responded to my questions and feedback on the forums and treated me as a valued user. Many years later, with quite a few additional screens and hosted CMS installations, still the Xibo crew is as ready to help me as ever, at times even advising to stick to the self-hosted CMS for my needs. As new clients come along, I will for sure recommend Xibo for their Digital Signage. Xibo is quite easy to use, affordable, versatile, scalable and offers great service. So for their continued hard work on this fantastic product, open and honest communication, and lack of pushing me towards paid solutions when self-hosted works fine, I can only say - having tried other Digital Signage platforms as well - they more than deserve a 5-star review. Pros Xibo offers extensive options and great versatility in the Xibo CMS and fantastic reliability of the Windows, Android and Tizen players (I have no experience with the other players, I can only assume those other players are just as reliable!). Cons There used to be quite a steep learning curve for the less tech savvy user, but the Xibo Training modules have improved that experience tremendously. September 10, 2025 5.0 Started using Xibo primarily for large retail estates around 4 years ago, after trying pretty much everything else - including in-house CMS in the 90s. Xibo gives us the flexibility to adapt to different scenarios and requirements, which makes it ideal for prototyping. The automation elements mean we can run large networks without constant intervention. Pros The flexibility; the ability to schedule .htz and dynamic overlays, which have proved invaluable, giving me opportunities I haven't seen before in scheduling software - I've been doing this since 1989. The Android player is suoer stable. Cons Black burst between videos on Windows player really needs resolving as it makes Xibo unsuitable for a commercial environment when there is a requirement for a Windows player. We've found the transition from CMS 3 to 4 quite difficult as it appeared top have a fundamentally different work flow from what we are used to, but everything is settling down now. IT Director Religious Institutions Used the software for: 1-2 years ### "Xibo is a great self-hosting signage solution" July 22, 2025 5.0 Easy to setup the Virtual Machine if you have basic Linux experience Minimal maintenance required other than trimming out your old files and updating the VM periodically Easy to use for the end users Pros Xibo is super easy to use. After looking at the cost of other solutions, which are largely moving to cloud-only solutions so they can lock you into to monthly fees, being able to create a Linux Virtual Machine on-prem (for free!) is an amazing alternative. I can create our weekly signage very easily using Xibo and since I cast to Windows computers behind displays, the licensing cost was also free. Cons I originally bought the licensing to have Xibo talk directly to my Samsung TVs but eventually it stopped working well and became a headache, and troubleshooting got harder. So I switched to using Windows computers behind the TVs and that really helped because you get better troubleshooting information from these, and it just seems to work better. I do sometimes have issues with the Windows computers showing the desktop bar on top of the signage, things like that, but the more I work on tweaking the computers, the less that is a thing. The App tries its best to keep itself online and on top but could possibly be a bit better there. I use it for digital signage at conferences and use pocket PC's to run the Xibo Windows client. The layout tool is easy, the media handling is intuitive and the scheduling is robust. My largest deployment was 41 digital signs at the American Institute of Architecture San Francisco meeting in 2023. Pros The CMS is very powerful. It is easy to create dynamic signage. Also, the scheduling has been able to handle any of my needs. Cons The only real con is when it looses internet connectivity. When this happens, the windows client simply shows the Xibo splash page. Good support. Well-priced. Still needs a bit of polish but it's constantly being improved. Pros The comprehensive and feature rich Cloud-based CMS. Straightforward player identification for scheduling, assigning layouts and monitoring data. Web-hooks are particularly useful for controlling players remotely. Good range of platform support. Able to manage a lot of players easily. Cons Some widgets even on higher end machines still seem jittery (ticker for example) and videos have to be carefully encoded to work smoothly on the Windows player. Error codes can be a little ambiguous when troubleshooting invalid layouts. Cons You bought a license for a version of Android player that is not compatible, usable, for another version. So everytime you upgrade your player you have to bought again the license.
