August 27, 2025 4.0 Xibo is a great tool for people who want an open-source CMS they can install on their own host, but the learning curve is a bit steeper than with other CMSs. This is due to its interface. Pros It's a very comprehensive, low-cost, secure, stable content management tool that's compatible with most current operating systems. It's great to be able to use it on your own host. Cons There are many processes, such as content scheduling, that aren't as simple. I think they could improve on that, as well as on several details of their interface. All of this compared to other CMSs. Having less than 10 signage screens across our campus, it has worked well enough for us to continue using it after they starting charging annual fees. Pros Xibo is a highly reliable, economical, web-based application/platform for distributing text and graphics content to TV display signage screens. Content may be scheduled or static. It's well supported and updated with acceptable frequency. Cons The Xibo interface, while versatile and powerful, has a steep learning curve. Xibo and its many users provide adequate learning content, but it would be fantastic if the environment could be simplified. We have very little issues with the system and many happy users Pros Really easy to setup, lots of integrations so your not fixed to model, full of features, great value Cons Getting the menu systems to work takes a lot of effort to get right. Updating the system is risky so HA would be great. While the onboarding is simple a dedicated app from your install would be great. Xibo can be run at no cost when self-hosted with the Windows played. Cloud hosting and player software for other platforms are available for minimal additional cost. Cons User interface can sometimes be a little clunky, but once you are familiar with it, using it become staright forward. It’s also highly recommended for a limited budget. Pros It’s an easy-to-use system with a lot of features. Whether it’s for 3 displays or 100, it can be easily scaled, and managing the players is completely straightforward. It also supports a wide range of operating systems. Plus, it’s free! Cons There are frequent updates, which isn’t necessarily a drawback, but with a self-hosted system it requires a bit more effort. July 22, 2025 5.0 We are using it to develop a community digital calendar with local businesses. Each customer has a display and can submit events for the network. Billing is based on the number of displays they are on each month. Being on the network is free currently. Pros Xibo was the easiest to use of the major signage players. The ability to use an API and develop our own signage system for our customers was pivotal. Cons The software offers so many options that occasionally it can be a bit confusing to make sure that everything is in the right place. And they continue the help until it is solved. Pros 99% availability and when it’s not available, the player will still run. Only syncing would be postponed. Cons It’s not cheap and with my old(er) plan, I can’t use the new functionality. Which is ashame, since old customers are loyal customers. Updates are made to make things more efficient but at the same time it's not a huge adjustment. Pros I like the ease of use in Xibo. To change a slide or the order of slides is very easy and quick to do. Cons It would be nice to see the slide show before publishing it. Each slide could be shown and then publish could happen. June 12, 2025 5.0 I handle all my small business digital signage needs with self hosted Xibo and cheap Google Chromecast with Google TV sticks with android client licenses. No other system even gets close in affordability and useability for a small business. Pros Solid digital signage system. CMS is free to try and use. Windows client is free, multiple other platforms are available for affordable one-time fee. Cons Linux client is still under developement, but that is totally understandable.
