Software that optimizes energy utilization for Microgrid architecture. When compared to other optimizing program on the market, HOMER Pro is somewhat pricey.

Pros

A variety of renewable energy sources can be used in Homer to simulate microgrids. The fact that Homer makes it possible to conduct technical and financial analysis in the best method, is what matters most.

Cons

It takes some effort to grasp the program interface.

A very complete software with minor cons that gives great value results if your inputs are thoroughly thought.

Pros

With a few hours you can easily manipulate the software. Homer works with NASA databases to obtain data (climate, solar radiation, wind velocities, etc.) from regions across the world, critical in any energy project. Homer optimizer displays the best results with the various energy generation methods the user provides. Of course, it is better when the user inputs reasonable, affordable, and available generation methods according to their case. Homer´s primary criteria for energy projects rely con costs, so efficient cheaper systems are offered first. Data is easily exported so you can further analyze in software like MATLAB to analyze energy generation and consumption (so you can further optimize the proposal). Grid tariffs are easily modified.

Cons

Databases allow for a general approach to the scenario, but they could be updated more frequently to have better, more actual data of the current situation in your region (of course you can import your data but it would be better if Homer automatically was up to date).

Good, satisfied, not an upset one, knowledgeable, Something new and unknown, revealing a high technique software.

Pros

I have used this software in my subject Energy storage and flexibility options. It is an good software to know about the Energy consumption at relevant area and locations. It basically gives an overall idea of which type of Energy is highly consumed and in what percentage for e.g solar 30%, hydro 20%, coal 10%, geo thermal 10% etc. The working and presentations of the software is easy and the controls were also pretty easy. I use to solve some examples via this software of my subject. I got an access to Homer Pro version and I operate it for some thrice a time but not much. But there is a lot of potentiality is their in this software and may be future things or Energy utilities can be compulsory be analyze by Homer Energy.

Cons

The software needs a lot of publicity in the open market and especially in the core Energy sector. As many Energy analysts were not known to such technology. I will also recommend a feature like simulink by which a simulation of the Energy flow can be performed.

A very good software for energy sector and optimization of energy resources.

Pros

HOMER is a user friendly software that can be used effectively in designing renewable energy systems as well as energy optimization. I have used HOMER for some of my design projects and as a professional engineer I am happy with the output. This is a very useful software for professionals who are in the energy sector.

Cons

In my opinion user friendliness of the software is a little less due to complex software interface.

Hi Chamil, Thank you very much for your thoughtful review of the HOMER software. I don't mean to ask for your time, but if you are able, we would be very interested in hearing a few more details about your experience. Are there are certain concepts or screens in the HOMER software where you find the interface particularly complex? Do you have some thoughts about what would make it easier to understand? Pros

it can be used to design energy systems including the calculations and system designs of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power as well. Has a good data library that can be used for designing and trial out the systems as per the requirement.

Cons

can update the data library as the of certain rural areas had to be updated manually when designing the system.
