I am evangelical about EDGE - it's a great design! Pros Easy to use, easy to navigate around interface, tabs do what you think they will, icons are sensible, system does not respond in unexpected ways. Operations are 'foolproof' - it is almost impossible to accidentally delete or overwrite something, which makes you confident to experiment. Support materials are easily accessible and clear, support team are great and really helpful. System can be optimised to have additional 'personalised' functions via Forms and Workflows so can be easily adapted to your own ways of working. R&D Coordinator Research Used the software for: 2+ years ### "Easy to access system with adaptable functionality" May 27, 2020 5.0 EDGE is a good company who we have had positive interactions with. When escalation is required to EDGE they are quick to get back to you and offer support via regional contacts if required. It is a very effective research management system. Pros The system is user-friendly and can allow training to be rolled out with minimal support. There is functionality to use adapt the system within the limits of the programme to be bespoke for your organisation. Allows collaboration, and visibility of data to a wide audience and it is particularly useful to be able to gain access from a web-browser for home working. It has been essential for our switch to home-working during the COVID-19 pandemic. Cons Creating reports being limited to admin users is not very user friendly due to time constraints for the admin staff. We do not use EDGE for our reporting purposes for that reason, however the ability to create reports for staff to use does get around this slightly. I enjoy training new staff on Edge and showing other members of the team features that we currently do not use within our Trust. If I had it my way we would be using Edge to its full advantage and Edge would be the first port of call for everyone within the department. Pros I use Edge constantly throughout my working day, it is easy to navigate around and keeps track of all the studies that I currently have in set up. I use the reports regularly to keep up to date with the tasks I need to complete each week. Uploading documents has now become so much easier with Edge 3 and there are constant updates to make our work each day easier Cons Edge logs you out of your account after not using it for 20 mins or so so constantly logging back in. Within the guidance EDGE is categorised as an AAL Level 3 system, the policy stipulates the requirement reauthentication after a defined period of inactivity, usually 15 minutes. I can also leave out/ignore features/fields I don't want to use, without any issues. Pros This software is designed from the site user's perspective and not from the 'top down' like most other software. As a research site, we have visibility of all our projects and participants in one space, regardless of who the study sponsor is or where the study is being conducted. We can easily see the status of all our projects. Cons There are many ways (almost too many) to navigate the system, which can make it hard for new users to learn/grasp. There is a navigation bar horizontally across the top of the page and another vertically down the left side of the page. This can be confusing for new users. The reports in EDGE are accessed by Admins but data on the project/project site/participant levels is controlled by role-based permissions set on each study, ensuring that only authorized users can make changes at the appropriate level. Interactive reports are useful but they introduce more complexity and risk due to less control over updates and a lack of auditing. Bypassing role-based permissions can lead to inaccurate data, or users overwriting each other's changes. While we do understand the benefit of making changes at the reporting level, we're exploring better ways to help users drill down into report data, identify inaccuracies, and improve overall data quality across the system. It holds all the information personnel need to know about a trial and it is accessible to all those that need it. I can run reports from EGDE that are built for our needs at service level, it gives us oversight of our trials. Pros Accessible anywhere, flexible, adaptable to your service, give researcher autonomy in how they run their trials. I love the workflows as I can track processes, add in details so I know exactly where we are at. EDGE is also allowing us to move more from paper to electronic for documenting training and delegation logs, which makes it quicker to sign up personnel to work on trials. Cons I do not see any cons of using EDGE. For some it is another system they have to log into, which may be a down side, but for me it is an essential system. September 17, 2019 5.0 We have been using EDGE for 7-8 years and it has been instrumental to our department's management. Prior to EDGE, we did not have an accurate way of tracking our studies and recruitment data. After rolling out EDGE, we have become extremely precise. We use EDGE to track all recruitment activities, assign studies, analyze staff workload, share recruitment reports and trial listings, track ethics submissions and approvals, upload regulatory documents and centralized files, and track basic finance information, among many other uses. Regarding our users, our frontline staff are responsible for entering recruitment information and maintaining patient statuses. We also give EDGE access to our investigators so they can look up protocols and regulatory documents, as well as our active and upcoming trials by disease site. We share reports with all of our users using the My Reports feature for quick retrieval of data. Sharing this data in EDGE has resulted in a great uptake of the system across all types of users (coordinators, CRAs, primary care teams, physicians/investigators, admin assistants, senior management, finance, pharmacy, etc.). The reports we are able to pull from EDGE are second to none - we can build any report, any time, anywhere! Recently, we began using Power BI to create dynamic reports from the data pulled from EDGE to enhance our ability to drill down and ask questions of our data. As we continue to use EDGE, the system truly grows and develops with us. Pros \-Easy to use -Reliable -Fully customizable fields allows you to create meaningful reports -Able to maintain an accurate record of all trials and patients -Having EDGE at your fingertips means that the information you are looking for is always available when you need it -Acts as a repository for all of our protocols and regulatory documents -Users are able to suggest new features or improvements to help build the system for all users. -Networking and sharing ideas with other sites as part of a community of EDGE users. Not only are we able to connect directly with other sites about EDGE, but we can also reach out to other sites about our shared trials. EDGE has truly broken down the "silo-ed" nature of clinical trials. Cons \-Needs a data tracking tool to allow end users and admin to track their patient visits, data entry, and data timeliness. -Would like to see a more robust and automated finance module that integrates with patient visits and data entry. Currently the finance module is very manual. -Enhancements to the user interface would be helpful (e.g. drag-and-drop) (to be addressed in Edge v3) Reason for choosing EDGE Several other products were evaluated before EDGE was selected. EDGE was chosen over all other platforms for many reasons, including: 1) Value for price - EDGE offered everything we needed and more for a lower cost than most other platforms. 2) Fully customizable fields - EDGE allows admins to create and report on any field. We are not "tied down" to the static fields that were offered by other platforms. 3) Ability to work with the EDGE team to develop the system - We directly have an impact on the development of new features. We are not at the mercy of the developers creating updates behind closed doors; there is community and transparency in EDGE development work. 4) Understanding - the creators of EDGE truly understand clinical trials and the groundwork that is involved, and worked with frontline staff to create the system. 5) Sharing - Being able to easily connect with other EDGE users across the country promotes idea sharing, changes in practice, and provides an opportunity for standardization at a higher level. The helpdesk is always available and ready to answer any questions or offer help and advise on functionality. Pros I have used Edge for over 10 years, initially Version 1 followed by Version 2. The team at Edge are always looking to improve the functionality of the system and also regularly look at suggestions from users on their 'Got an Idea' board. The system is easy to use, and teams can get as much out of it as they put in. Using entities and attributes enable additional information to be captured that may be relevant locally, and workflows can monitor the various processes and timescales. Being a web based system allows access across the site. Cons We have had to adapt and use some Edge functionality in a different way for the Primary Care setting as the amount of data used is a lot larger than that in our Secondary Care. Its a great system to use to get an oversight of your trial data and to have it all in one place. From my experience, EDGE is a strong and practical clinical trial management system, especially for academic, regional, or national clinical trial environments where a shared platform is needed. Overall, I consider EDGE to be a worthwhile investment. It is easy to use once good processes are in place, and its value increases significantly when organizations use it consistently and connect it to reporting, dashboarding, and portfolio management processes. For 3CTN Coordination, EDGE has supported both operational management and higher-level analysis, making it an important part of our clinical trial informatics infrastructure. Pros What I like most about EDGE is that it provides an integrated way to track the full clinical trial process, from early pre-trial and feasibility activities through study activation, ongoing trial operations, recruitment monitoring, finance-related tracking, and trial completion. This process tracking is one of EDGE’s most valuable and unique features because it helps streamline work across the clinical trial lifecycle instead of treating each stage as a separate activity. EDGE is also well suited for use by a clinical trial network, region, or group of organizations that need a shared platform for working with the same trials and projects. As a web-based clinical trial management system, it allows member sites to maintain trial information directly in one platform while enabling network-level users to work with aggregate data for monitoring, reporting, and planning. This common platform supports both local operational workflows and broader strategic decision-making. Another important advantage is flexibility. Sites can enter data manually or use import tools, which helps accommodate different local workflows, resource levels, and stages of readiness. Research Governance Facilitator Hospital & Health Care Used the software for: 2+ years ### "Main source of information " September 16, 2026 5.0 I am using EDGE throughout the day, this is the main source of information where I can find the latest patient facing documents or I can look up any source of information like is there a pharmacy support, when recruitment finished or whether a PI has approved a modification yet etc. Pros EDGE is used for our research main database to store the study documents and track processes for better patient efficiency. Easy to use and train new users. The customer and client support is always available if any problem and they take any users feedback on board to make it more user friendly. There are regular updates to the system to fix bugs and issues. The reports are very useful to give an overall picture on performance and setup workflows/forms to track any issues or help to adjust to specific timelines. Cons The system constantly logging us out every 20 minutes, but I understand it is setup for safety. We don't tend to use it yet for site file management or delegation/training logs. September 22, 2026 5.0 I have been using EDGE since 2018. my entire reporting function relies on EDGE. i love how you can tailor it to your internal processes. it allows me to be creative with my reports and allows be to adjust my reporting to our every changing business needs. we have recently rolled out the use of EDGE to all clinical staff which has been really positive. Some of them were wary about using the system but the feedback has been very positive and they have found it easy to use. Pros The team are super responsive, if you have any issues they are always on hand to troubleshoot. when you go to them with suggestions for improvements, they take them on board and action them where possible. All of my reporting function goes through EDGE so it certainly makes my life much easier. Cons IM generally a big fan of EDGE and i know that upgrades can be a difficult process, but sometimes when upgrades have been done, the field names can sometimes change slightly, which then throws out my reports. September 17, 2026 5.0 I have used Edge since 2014 and was involved in the implementation at my HB so I really recognised the benefits from day 1. Going from using paper diaries and spreadsheets to using Edge for every aspect of managing research and participants was invaluable. Pros Edge transformed our daily workflow by bringing everything into one centralised system. Every aspect of the study and participant journey is managed within Edge, from study set up, finance, document management, appointments, reporting, processes and training records. Having all information in one place has significantly improved efficiency and organisation across our organisation. Cons There are no features I dislike on Edge, everything I need can be stored or created using the system. September 23, 2026 5.0 I can't recommend EDGE enough, and frequently do to anyone who will listen. As a Trust, I would say we are one of the most advanced nationally with our use of EDGE and have presented several times at EDGE conferences and supported other Trusts with their development and use of the system. Pros EDGE is a fantastic project management system for Research! My role is in Data and Reporting and I am also our Trust's Lead Admin and trainer for the system so I use it constantly through my working day. The user interface is very clean and easy to navigate and I love how customisable the system is with options such as creating custom forms for data collection on research studies and participants. Cons As with all systems there is always room for improvement and development and the support team are fantastic at working on developing and progressing the system and also supporting Trusts with any suggestions and ideas. However, the only area of the system I would love to see developed further is the audit functionality to allow more thorough and accurate auditing of data entry and user management, particularly as our Trust uses every aspect of the system so fully. September 29, 2026 5.0 I've been using EDGE since 2004 and have seen it progress into an amazing database. I thoroughly enjoy using it as it makes everything so much easier. It has reduced the discrepancies we once had to go through for hours. If there is a discrepancy (which these days is very rare) we can find it in no time at all! Pros EDGE makes recording participant recruitment so much easier. No more spreadsheets and having to keep going back to staff to ask how many they recruited in a month. The information is there at your fingertips. Cons The reporting for finance could be so much more than it is. It is very basic and could do with being more like the project form reporting so we can 'build' reports. EDGE is a vital tool in managing our research portfolio and allows us to report our metrics and data, which is essential to our teams and our Trust. It also provides oversight on our projects which is vital to us. Pros EDGE is user-friendly and adaptable to our needs and those of others. We record a lot of information that assists with local work, regional work, and regulatory work. The system is dynamic and customisable to an extent. The team, from support all the way to developers, is friendly, approachable and open to feedback and will ask for it when looking at new ideas. The system is built for the research community, and you can tell it's been made by people passionate about the research community and the way research is run. Cons Sometimes data can be duplicated, but this is not the system's fault, as it feeds into other systems, which are not within EDGE's control. Additionally, each institution may have its own needs, which can be difficult to manage with requests, as sometimes they could be competing, so it can take a little time to get updates added, but when they are added, they work well and are what the community needs. September 29, 2026 5.0 Overall, EDGE is an easy system to implement, thanks to the helpful and engaging team supporting it, but it's also easy to maintain and use. We've had fantastic success with improving our governance reporting needs and general oversight, but we have also increased our cost recovery in commercial contract research. This has meant that the system, which is already quite affordable, has already paid for itself. Pros The best part of EDGE for me is the configurability and flexibility to set it up for my own needs. We have been using it primarily for sponsored studies, as a centralised repository of information for our QMS purposes and as a shared single point of truth for our governance oversight. The help and support functionality built in is impressive and very user friendly for new users and those that have forgotten how to do something. If that first line of support fails, and no one internal to our organisation can help, I've found that the support team are very responsive and helpful in resolving issues. To date, I haven't come across an actual bug beyond user error. The team are really friendly and easy to approach and talk to. Cons My only critical comment is that the finance functionality, particularly for commercial contract studies, relies on external tools (provided by the EDGE team) to fully function. The tools are easy to use and the overall process is still streamlined, but having the total package built into the system itself would be amazing. EDGE is great! Pros Its user friendly, and works well. It also has many useful functions to deliver our studies successfully. I like that you can bulk upload as this saves a lot of time. I also like the dark function to reduce the brightness, this can help when being on the computer for a long period of time. Cons Sometimes its easy to duplicate patients on EDGE if it does not display the warning. It would be good if you can populate the date when adding a patient to EDGE, as this is often the same date for screening, approaching and consenting.
