I just wish I could convince more of the team to use it. Some people get stuck in the old way of doing things and waste time doing so. Pros The wetland forms are the bread and butter, and the refinements over the last couple years have made it excellent. I like to be able to make other custom forms as well, it’s a real pain to bring paper forms for just about any fieldwork operation, so having it on phones generally is preferred by all. Cons Not being able to make a custom pdf export to be able to take information and directly apply it to a blank form (like the wetland form). I know there is a way to take an excel export and have it fill a pdf, but I definitely lack that level of dedication… Alternatives considered [Ecobot](https://www.capterra.com/p/203394/Ecobot/) Reason for choosing Wildnote Functionality outside of just the wetland form. Associate Archaeologist Environmental Services Used the software for: 1-2 years ### "Wildnote Use in Cultural Resources Management Fieldwork" August 22, 2025 4.0 Once I got some experience using it to collect data and using it to export data collected by others, I felt more confident about using it as a field data collection software. I still prefer paper for a lot of reasons, but I've been exposed to a couple of other types of digital field data collection software and I find Wildnote to be the smoothest to use. Pros It's nimbleness. The ability to edit forms and make changes let's us perfect our process over time and adapt for various scenarios. Cons There is a bit of a learning curve both for field users and officer/desktop users, groups which don't always overlap. The photo index and numbering systems don't export in ways that make them easy to work with or search through after the fact. We keep having to create work arounds for random issues because our needs and workflows can be rather niche. The inability to allow two users into the same for at the same time creates restrictions in certain workflows and introduces the risk of accidentally compromising data. Sometimes large photo downloads just won't happen and you have to try again later. It's not a one stop shop, because we can't digitally map in it presently. Pros The Wildnote app has streamlined field reporting and greatly improved efficiency while maintaining compliance oversight. I found that it was quick to learn and easy to use. The data management functions provide a fast and coherent way to look at trends and track deficiencies. Cons I would like to see improvement to the app camera to include regulatory stamp requirements such as date, time, coordinates, compass bearing, etc. This would be one more feature to improve efficiency in the field. We use it for traditional field data capture as well as admin tasks like timesheets and resumes. Pros Wildnote's customer service is unparalleled. If I ever come across a bug or a recommendation of additional functionality, the Wildnote team is incredibly responsive and helpful. Unlike alternative programs, Wildnote is built specifically for my industry which means that it has built in features to facilitate my specific type of data capture. Cons User error is a little high with data sometimes being lost with syncing at inopportune times or users not syncing often enough. Admin syncs take a long time if we have multiple projects. Reason for choosing Wildnote Wildnote's functionality for biological data capture makes it uniquely effective for me and my team. In order to build that functionality in other platforms, we would have to spend hours upon hours to build that on our own. Pros Wildnote is a straghtforward easy to teach and use product that saaves time when processing large amounts of field data. Cons I wish they would add a feature that allows you to track a topic or issue across reports. For example on Monday I observe improper erosion control, on Tuesday its still there and wednesday it is fixed. Instead of each one being treated independently a way to open a file and check on it each day until closed would be extremly useful . Also a way to customize reports more easily. Currently, you can use "Survey Status" which will allow you to flag submitted data as "draft, submitted, reviewed, exported, rejected, and open issues". You can track open issues by giving the Survey a status of Open Issue, thus allowing you to track the issue. On the reporting front, we continue to release features that give you report customization including our "Narrative Summary Report" that allows you to query your project for specific data that you can use to inform your summary details. Revenues are up and we are able to complete more projects on time and under budget. Pros Wildnote is scalable for all types of projects. If my company wants to hire 20 people for a job I know Wildnote will be able to handle that temporary increase because of the flexible pricing and with it working on both Android and iOS devices. The ability to build my own forms quickly and deploy them immediately is also a big plus. Cons If it had a strong mapping component the software would be more effective. I've been in contact with the team at Wildnote, however, and this is coming down the line at some point. It was immediately useful and cut down on redundant work and increased our efficiency. Whenever we had any questions or problems, the customer service was highly responsive and worked hard to address our needs. Pros What I liked most about this software was the ability to take pictures and manage them easily to create photo logs with captions. That feature alone cut down on hours of work for us. Another incredibly useful feature was the ability of the wetland delineation forms to search for any plant species and have the indicator status pop up immediately. That has been amazingly useful in the field when trying to determine if an area is a wetland. Cons The areas that could use improvement are incorporating wildnote into GIS, and relating information in wildnote to GIS datasets. Reason for choosing Wildnote At the time, Wildnote was more complete and ready to roll out, and Ecobot was still in development. The ability to upload data/reports from the field and have instant access to the information throughout our users on Wildnote has been useful in tracking project statuses. Pros Real-time syncing of data collected in the field to managers or other users off-site. Customizing forms to fit the needs of our organization. The customer support has been top-notch, and we are never far from a solution when issues have arisen. The export feature allows us to file PDFs on our servers and keep records internally and through Wildnote. We have not fully integrated our field operations into Wildnote but are looking forward to the continued deployment of this software to increase our efficiency and reduce redundancies. Cons The customization of forms can feel a bit clunky at times, and is not terribly intuitive. That being said, with a bit of time spent on familiarizing myself, I like the amount of customization you can put into forms. There have been a few issues when trying to upload photos, but customer support staff have provided a high level of service and suggested work-arounds or solutions promptly. June 25, 2019 5.0 The software streamlines data collection, reduced post-processing and data entry time (translates to savings for the client), and makes clean data outputs and photo pages for reporting. Pros The software is easy to set up, easy to create a collection form the way I needed it, and super easy to get the pdf output of the data form that I needed. Customer service is helpful, and willing to walk you through any questions or issues; they even helped us retrieve data that we thought was lost (it wasn't, just well hidden). Photos and data are all in one place, and easily retrievable. Cons I am not fully confident about the accuracy of the GPS coordinate collection. The software only uses the intrinsic tablet GPS, and does not allow for connection with an external GPS receiver (which would increase accuracy of collected lats/longs. Cons Personally I haven't had any problems with it yet - it might be nice to integrate an automatic syncing process so that If a user forgets to sync data it gets done automatically - but its a minor point.
