We selected Ant Media Server Enterprise for a real-time live commerce platform after evaluating several WebRTC and low latency alternatives. It won mainly on official mobile SDK support and built-in clustering, which meant we did not have to build our own clients or stitch together separate services. It runs on self-managed VPS infrastructure under Docker in a swarm setup, with the media layer handling streaming and delivery while our application layer stays authoritative for business logic. We use the data channel narrowly, only for broadcasting confirmed events to viewers, and that has been reliable. Broadcaster device handover also worked better than we expected. Getting there took longer than planned, mostly due to documentation gaps and clustering setup, but support was responsive and filled in what the docs did not. For a project that needs sub-second latency with real mobile clients, we would choose it again.

Pros

Sub-second WebRTC latency is the main reason we picked it. The official React Native, iOS, and Android SDKs saved us weeks compared to alternatives where we would have had to build clients ourselves. Origin-edge clustering works well for scaling viewers without overloading the ingest node. The data channel is useful for pushing real-time events alongside the stream instead of running a separate socket layer. Hourly licensing at a low per-node rate made it affordable to test at small scale before committing. Support was responsive and we got direct contact with a real engineer instead of a ticket queue.

Cons

The licensing side is confusing when you self host, especially once autoscaling is involved. It is not clear how keys are supposed to work across nodes that come and go, and the docs do not really explain it, so we had to ask support to be sure we were doing it right.

Powerful and easy to use solution for broadcasting. Fast deployment, versatile and stable. Reasonable pricing!

Pros

The product support is just fantastic! We wanted to try the product for video broadcasting and just after leaving a request on their site I was contacted by ANT and representative who has explained me the different deployment options. He has also organized a technical meeting where their specialist has done a demo of the product, helped configured the stream. support was available later during the deployment stage for optimizing the video quality and to solve an issue with the AWS auto-managed deployment. Very reactive in responding to our messages, helpful in providing documentation. I was really shocked by such a high quality of the product support. I've rarely experienced similar attitude in my 25 years of work in IT.

Cons

we were using the stream through vpn so some MTU adjustment was needed on the camera stream side. probably not related to Ant Media Server but rather to the transmission protocol.

For me as an undergrad researcher in Computer Science, Ant Media Server was an invaluable tool. What made it so special for us was the MoQ support as this puts us a step ahead in terms of networking research. Its deployment on our university cloud not only addressed our concerns related to the privacy of data but commercial providers of SaaS could not offer this either. Nevertheless, there were quite a few challenges faced by my undergrad assistants in deploying it for the first time because the documentation is quite technical and requires prior knowledge regarding the configuration of TURN/STUN server and SSL certificate management. Apart from that, even though it works wonders after being configured, it does not meet our needs in terms of dashboard as we had to deploy some additional analytics outside the server for publication purposes.

Pros

Research & Academic Value (MoQ support): The new addition of MoQ (Media over QUIC) in v3.0 is a goldmine for our networking lab. This will enable us to play around with next-gen transport protocols for our thesis without having to build our own WebRTC stack. On-Premise Installations (IRB and privacy considerations): As a university, we work with student data and IRB considerations. On-premise installations mean that we do not have to upload any student faces or videos from the lab to any third-party cloud services. Student-Friendly Pricing Model: Thanks to the community edition, I was able to build my capstone project without going through the process of getting budget from the department. Perpetual licenses are also very useful for university labs that have servers running for decades. Multi-protocol on the same server for different applications: RTSP for campus security cameras, WebRTC for interactive language classes and HLS for live commencement ceremony broadcasts.

Cons

No Comprehensive Academic Analytic Data on Dashboard: As a scientist, I need detailed analytics such as packet loss graphs, jitter over time, viewer geolocation to produce my scientific work. The current dashboard provides only simple information on CPU/Memory, so I am forced to send logs to Grafana. Limitations of Community Edition: There is no GPU acceleration and auto-scaling in the free edition. We can't do massive (up to 1,000 users) conferences simulation for our research without switching to Enterprise version of the application that needs proper financing from grants. Difficulties with Updating the Application Version: Updating the application version is a difficult process, especially in universities when we have legacy code built for previous APIs and the upgrade procedure usually takes a whole weekend of regression testing.

Switched from

[Wowza Streaming Engine](https://www.capterra.com/p/180393/Wowza-Streaming-Engine/)

Ant Media Server provides true ultra-low latency (~0.5 seconds) with native WebRTC support, which is critical for my real-time interactive research. Wowza couldn't deliver the same sub-second performance for WebRTC streaming, and Ant Media's recent MoQ (Media over QUIC) support offers cutting-edge protocol experimentation that Wowza doesn't have

Our overall experience was very positive. Ant Media Server helped us solve a real-time video streaming and AI processing problem in a practical and reliable way. Compared to other alternatives, it was more flexible and easier to integrate into our system. The deployment performance, streaming stability, and documentation quality made the whole process smooth. I would rate it 5 stars because it solved our problem efficiently and adapted well to our workflow.

Pros

One click deploy, easy to use, and very flexible. We used Ant Media Server to receive live camera streams from construction sites and process them in real time with our AI models. The server was up and running on our infrastructure with a single click, and it provided stable video streams directly to our AI pipeline. We were also able to monitor multiple cameras at the same time without freezing or major delays. The documentation was clear, which made the integration much easier. Even though the company is large, being able to communicate with the founder was also a great experience.

Cons

There is not much to complain about. Some advanced configuration options may require a bit of technical understanding at first, but the documentation helps a lot. Overall, it worked very well for our use case.

This was my very first experience with using a real-time streaming engine and although at first I found it quite challenging, the end result was definitely worth it. It only took me less than an hour to set up the server on Ubuntu, but tuning the streaming settings became a challenge – this is when the Learning Curve kicked in. However, after everything came together, I was impressed with how good the Video performance was and the extra Security provided by self-hosting added to the authenticity of our project. The Features of WebRTC support, RTMP ingestion, and REST API helped us create a basic dashboard to control our event stream. Lack of Content Management functionality, however, required us to manage our recordings directly from the file system. Although having AI subtitling plugin was a good plus, it wasn't ready yet to be used in production. All in all, I think that Ant Media Server can be a great platform for engineering students to learn about live video streaming protocols.

Pros

But what sets OBS apart from others is its ultra-low latency WebRTC streaming. While conducting my project of streaming our campus event broadcasts, we noticed the near-zero delay in streaming, which made a huge difference, allowing viewers to interact in real time. Another aspect worth mentioning regarding video streaming was the high-quality streaming, which worked fine at 1080p on our outdated lab server. On the other hand, I should point out the fact that the entire Security aspect remains under our complete control since hosting the server on our university internal network allowed us to guarantee the security of our faculty requirements. All features provided by OBS Community Edition are impressive: WebRTC, RTMP, HLS, REST API, and Scribe plugin. As an experiment, I tried using AI-powered automatic subtitles; they do work if audio is decent. The installation script helped me launch the core functionality in no time, while proper configuration will give one a full feeling of being in control.

Cons

Ease of Use, however, is where the trouble starts. The web management console resembles something from a dashboard of a machine designed by an engineer back in 2010 — everything works, yet it feels very much dated. Learning Curve was quite steep since I had to learn about the intricacies of working with streaming technologies and understand how exactly apps, streams, and nodes interact with each other. Content Management system can hardly be called so; one would have access only to raw information about currently active streams. There is no feature for searching and archiving previous broadcasts, which made the process of conducting tests somewhat complicated. For Video Content creation such as scheduling broadcasts or even creating a basic VOD library, extra scripting or additional tools will have to be used. Our use of mobile SDK resulted in black-screen errors with React Native, thus, web-based viewers had to be used instead. Lastly, although the core server itself is pretty safe, the access control and authentication are poorly documented.
