It would not be an exaggeration to say that Ant Media Server is one of the best products I have worked with. The product quality is excellent, and the performance is consistently reliable. Equally impressive is their support team. highly responsive, knowledgeable, and genuinely committed to helping customers succeed. Pros We used Ant Media Server primarily for mass broadcasting and real-time video streaming use cases, and it has been a solid, reliable solution. The SDKs and APIs are well-designed and easy to integrate into web, desktop (using electron) and mobile applications. It only took me less than an hour to set up the server on Ubuntu, but tuning the streaming settings became a challenge – this is when the Learning Curve kicked in. However, after everything came together, I was impressed with how good the Video performance was and the extra Security provided by self-hosting added to the authenticity of our project. The Features of WebRTC support, RTMP ingestion, and REST API helped us create a basic dashboard to control our event stream. Lack of Content Management functionality, however, required us to manage our recordings directly from the file system. Although having AI subtitling plugin was a good plus, it wasn't ready yet to be used in production. On the other hand, I should point out the fact that the entire Security aspect remains under our complete control since hosting the server on our university internal network allowed us to guarantee the security of our faculty requirements. All features provided by OBS Community Edition are impressive: WebRTC, RTMP, HLS, REST API, and Scribe plugin. As an experiment, I tried using AI-powered automatic subtitles; they do work if audio is decent. The installation script helped me launch the core functionality in no time, while proper configuration will give one a full feeling of being in control. We do have Axis Camera and a NVR, but it is too much work for admin staff to log in and look at live feeds. We set up Ant Media with a web page and all the staff has to do is open the web page and view live feed. Couldn't make it any easier than that. Pros Ease of use, ease of setting up and ease of installing on Linux. We are using the free community edition, and that is a big Pros. Cons The free version has a few seconds delay. It was a lifesaver for us as we were able to have it up and running within 24 hours. We still use it to provide parents with the ability to monitor their students in class. Pros It's a turnkey livestream solution that can be self-hosted with minimal effort. I had been frustrated in my efforts with setting up a Linux server with NGINX and HLS, but Ant Media Server put them together in an easy to deploy package. The documentation and provided CloudFormation template got us 90-95% of the way to our use case. The Route53 and load balancer sections did not cover what we wanted to do. Pros The template installation provided a form to fill out where I provided the various information (stack name, min/max number of instances of each type, size of the EC2 instances, networks, etc). The automated install was fairly quick (somewhere between five and ten minutes IIRC). Cons We wanted to use a single hostname for the application portal as well as RTMP and SRT streaming. The Community Edition gave me everything I needed to get started with real-time streaming, and it performed better than expected. Because of that, I’m planning to upgrade to access more advanced features and scale my projects further. Pros Low-latency streaming works really well and is reliable. The Community Edition already includes a lot of useful features, which made it easy to test and build projects without upfront cost. Setup is simple, and the web interface is straightforward to use. WebRTC performance is especially impressive. Cons Some advanced features are only available in paid versions. Documentation can be a bit limited for more complex use cases, and there’s no dedicated support in the free plan.
