The last few years they have lost touch with small offices unless you double costs for cloud programming and storage, but interface is still archaic and not scalable. Pros Database and calendar features shared between staff provides efficiencies. Cons Program interface is archaic and not scalable. Mobile app is totally unreliable which makes the whole program unreliable in current environment. Reason for choosing AbacusLaw Once locked into Abacuslaw, it is very hard to exit. " July 28, 2018 4.0 Pros The software has many functions for streamlining your office. Take advantage of the training and free seminars to continue to learn about your product. Once you get tech support on the phone they work fast to resolve your issues and get you back on track. There is a Customer Portal where you can input support tickets. Easy access to all matters pertaining to a case i.e. pleadings, emails, invoices, contact information. Cons If you choose the cloud version instead of direct install any technical issue, error, etc. must go through their support team which can increase your down time. The ease of requesting a support ticket through the Customer Portal has one draw back for a busy law office- you don't know when they are going to call to fix the issue and the timing may not be the best. July 22, 2016 5.0 Pros Abacus offers a comprehensive system including case management, financial accounting and cloud storage. I think you can choose either one of the components or all of them. I prefer having case management and financial accounting all in the same program and a cloud environment is a must for me. So I have all three with Abacus. Cons The component that is missing at this time is a client private portal. Would be great to post client records there as opposed to having to mail everything to them. The cloud based component also intermittently goes offline depending upon the quality of one's internet connection. And, the cloud interface with Outlook and Word has a few minor glitches wherein Outlook does not always respond quickly when adding attachments to e-mails. The quick fix is to end the task one is working on through task master and start over. Lastly, the forms base is relatively small. That is probably due to my inexperience with macro forms development. In any case, I have not yet used their forms much. Review Source LG Linda G. It was difficult to find documents. We did not have "notes" so I had to create my own form to keep track of conversations with clients and other parties. It was difficult to manage cases. When I started using Abacus at my new firm, I love it. It is user friendly, has many features, and everything from billing, notes, and files can be found in one place. It is great. Pros The timer under Notes is my favorite feature because it makes it easier to keep track of how long I have been working on a task and bill accordingly. Cons I don't dislike anything about the software. There are tons of features I'm sure I don't even know about. Review Source MM Meredith M. Attorney Law Practice Used the software for: 2+ years ### "Negative experience would avoid this company" May 26, 2017 1.0 Pros The software itself is functional - not great but functional. I found it to be a bit behind the times but it works well enough. Cons The company continually requires more and more money. They sold me their software as a one-time-buy scenario however about a year or two after buying the software I received repeated calls from a salesman explaining that systems were crashing and I had to buy the update to avoid losing all my data. I was talked into buying the update even though I had no issues because I was told that my system could crash and lose data without warning. I later found out from techs at the company that there was no such major catastrophy. The company did, to its credit, provide me with a year worth of technical assistance which I never needed. I did just call with a request to switch my program to a new computer and the rep refused to help or let me speak to a manager. They sent me an e-mail with instructions but refused to walk me through it or assist me in the process of the transfer. Review Source WM Wendy M. My GL was out of balance with my bank account and although I knew the cause, I wasn’t able to fix it. I called the technical department yesterday but they weren’t able to help me. Rep patiently listened and then we checked things together. When all checked out she had the tables reset and that did it . I really appreciate her help, her courtesy, her knowledge and her patience. She deserves the Gold Nugget.” Pros Ease of use, prevents errors in accounting, ability for cross-referencing. Cons Technical help is not open minded and listening. March 6, 2020 2.0 Abacus response to issues with their program and billing was to threaten suit; this after years with Abacus and them selling me an add-on to their program to increase its performance then refusing to remove charges and the add-on from future monthly Billings after it did not help. Their cost is about 4 times more than other products offering more advanced features and better technology. Our people could still work whenever there was an outage or they were not in the office. Cons The transition to Abacus was extremely difficult. What was needed was spelled out before hand and was to take 30 days. Abacus finally started working with our specs 6 months later. This materially impacted our business. The initial Abacus team apparently did not have the understanding or experience. Once we got to the right level measurements and goals were established and we were operational. Pros This program for the most part is very easy to use. As with all software there a few changes that could be made, but overall we have been happy. Cons Some of the accounting procedures are a bit clunky. What should be an easy fix in some accounting software can be time consuming in Abacus. The storage space available is very small and very expensive. Pros The product is easy to use. The interface between Outlook works well. Cons We have trouble syncing to mobile devices. The calendar does not transfer well. Also, the disk storage is very limited. We should be able to sync with outside cloud storage if Abacus does not want to provide. " March 13, 2018 1.0 Cons In October 2017, I entered into an agreement with Abacus Next for case management and accounting support for my new law practice. At the time of entering into the contract I was promised a new laptop as part of a promotion which I never received. Abacus Next did not set up my software program until the end of February 2018. I have encountered numerous issues with the software and have made many unsuccessful attempts in trying to get Abacus to rectify the ongoing issues. Every time I call I am placed on hold or routed to various people who are unable to address the problems. Abacus has also made many false representations on their website about their program. First, their 800 support number does not work. Second, the email accounts set up of for my law firm do not work. Third, I am never able to speak to a supervisor. Due to their lack of response, my staff is unable to email clients and I am unable to access new cases that are sent to me. I have asked that they return my email to my GoDaddy account for over a week so I can take back control over my email account and they have failed to do so. On one occasion while speaking with tech support I could hear other individuals talking in the background and overheard an employee say to another person. This is completely unprofessional. Pros I like the fact that this program is easy to use and you can learn the basics very quickly. Adding documents to a file is relatively easy although this aspect can use a little work. Cons I don't like the fact that you can't generate forms easily in this document. This is the most frustrating part of this program. Taking the information and being able to draft a form would be something that is essential to a Law Office program. Pros The software has so much it can do! I like the templates feature that allows you to have prepared letters and forms. I also like having billing associated with the same program. Cons The professional training is expensive so you don't end up using the software to full capacity. Prior to its use, we were using three programs to do the work of Abacus, which meant entering basic information in three different programs and inputting data from one program into another to run reports, do billing, etc. Abacus has saved us a great deal of time. Pros I like the fact that Abacus Law and Abacus Accounting work so well together. Everything integrates nicely which saves me a lot of time. I also like the fact that tech support is local (in San Diego), speaks English, and is (almost) always available. Cons Our software developed a "glitch" quite some time ago and neither tech support, nor the engineering staff, were able to resolve it. It's still there, and it keeps throwing me error messages, but the program works in spite of it. Our main complaint is that we would like to upgrade to the new version of Abacus, but it does not work offline, so we've had to stay with the older version. (Internet in our area of town goes down frequently, and our practice is very Abacus-dependent.) Review Source HL Henriette L. June 16, 2017 4.0 Pros It's a full case management program that encompasses everything we need it to do to run our office smoothly. It links all of our documents, schedules all of our appointments, keeps track of reminders, etc. etc. and it's easy to use. We have 27 users and when Abacus is down, we are lost. Cons The Accounting portion of Abacus has it's issues. With each new update, changes are made in an attempt to improve it, but there always seems to be some tweaking needed. The Abacus support team, however, has improved tremendously, and they are always ready and available to help make those tweaks. Review Source AS Alicia S. Great and simple product but powerful in that it tracks everything for you. Cons The updates are a pain, because we have to call and have this done remotely. We can't do the updates ourselves. Having our data secure, as well as the ease and portability of the software, is very important to our business. We love that we can run our business from wherever we are and never have to worry about IT needs. If we have an issue, which is rare, it's resolved immediately. The client services support team is top notch and we would highly recommend them. Cons Our firm is very happy with the software. We rarely have any issues, but if we do, they're easily resolved. October 17, 2018 5.0 Our overall experience has been excellent! WE use it not only for our cases but for billing, so it keeps us informed in all aspects of our cases. Pros Allows me to keep my events, documents, and e-mails all in one place, which makes it easier to reference those items quickly. I also use the documents feature, which allows me to create and edit documents I use on a daily basis. Cons The only thing I find negative about this program is when I create a document in a case it takes a little longer to appear in Word.
